It was great to hear the names read out in the NAB final.
"Number 1 - GUN!"
"Number 2 - GUN!"
"Number 3 - GUN!"
"Number 4 - GUN!"
"Number 5 - GUN!"
"Number 6 - GUN!"
:D

Well maybe not number 2... :p

Both JR and Benchy have had great preseasons and look well on the way to proving their naysayers wrong.

Numbers 1-7 inclusive on the Carlton list look like forming the nucleus of a very strong Carlton team in the future for many years to come.

Gotta agree with you there J.
So much talent on our list at the minute. Who knows what we could produce this year.

Oh the respect is there for them but saying that numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 13 and 44 are guns just doesn't have the same ring to it :P

You'd also have to add 14, 17 and 30 as well. But your right Sublime, it just doesn't have the same ring to it.

I'm on the Bentick bandwagon...good in and under..great skills...hard not scared to give it out...am I one of the few who think he's worth the jumper????

With the period your club has had i hope they all turn out for you. Never like to see a club on its knees..glad its turning around.

Good to see some Bombers are decent posters:thumbsu:

Us Vics need to stay together..I really hope the Essendon V Carlton game Sheeds was on about ends up happening..

I cant wait for the next big Victorian era where the true big clubs of the game such as ourselves come to the fore and grab the competition by the neck..Its where we belong. More then happy to support the blues if its for the better of Vic football..Unless its V Essendon of course..but we do need to shed our differences and tribal instincts when it comes to the survival of a brother..We have the afl against us atm..Its all nationalise etc..while we are struggling..I the vic presidents would get together and make a stand..

Anyway on another thought how do you think a list of seven bomber youngsters would compare to yours..personally i think we will have some cracker games in the future..

Say: 1. Gumbleton
2. Jetta
3. Watson
4. Dempsey
5. Davey
6. Monfries
7. Ryder

That doesnt include say, Houli, Slattery, Hislop, Neagle, Winderlich etc..

That list is good, but IMO Carlton's is ahead.

We can have a look:
Walker vs Gumbleton-Walker
Russell vs Jetta-Russell
Murphy vs Watson-Murphy
Gibbs vs Dempsey-Gibbs
Kenney vs Davey-Kennedy
Simpson vs Monfries-Simpson (toughest comparison of the lot)
Bentick vs Ryder-ATM Bentick. Ryder may have overaken him by the end of their careers though.

1. Kennedy
2. Betts
3. Gibbs
4. Grigg
5. Murphy
6. Russell
7. Hampson

And we would add, Anderson, Benjamin, Edwards, Blackwell, Bower, Russell

I think we stack up pretty well in the youngster stakes.

1. Gumby would have to have the edge on Kennedy based on U18's form and would be a win to you guys
2. Eddie has some runs on the board and difficult to compare them as Jetta was taken top 20 whereas Eddie was a rookie pick. Jetta has the potential to be a much better ball winner than Eddie.
3. Again Watson has the runs on the board but on pure potential I wouldn't trade Gibbs for the world
4. I think Grigg and Dempsey probably share a lot of similarities (size and speed and AFL position), I watched a bit of Dempsey in the VFL last year, and from what I have seen of Grigg in the Ants praccie games I again would prefer him to Dempsey on potential
5. Probably a bit unfair to Davey to compare him to Murph :o
6. The obvious comparison as they were taken in the same draft, Monfries at 14 and Russell at 9. Would give the nod to Monfires at the moment, although Russell could be a late bloomer and is poised to become a good stopper.
7. Ryder still looks a bit like a deer in headlights to me and will need a lot more time. Although Hampson is skinny and raw he has amazing athleticism for his size and I am more convinced about him making it as a full-time AFL ruckman than Ryder. Ryder might provide you with good versatility in the long run playin KPP and pinch hitting in the ruck.

As for the others I am obviously unable to be completley objective, but I am still happier with the guys I listed than Houli etc... which is not to say that you guys are not improving your list as well.

Obviously we look a lot healthier with the two number 1 picks, Murph and Gibbs, but I think our later picks might surprise a few people in years to come.

Fair enough..Id say we will be very compeditive side as yourselve sin the not too distant future as that list includes 3 first year players this year..Id just like to say aswell that essendon killed it in the draft this year..Who did you pick up after Gibbs?

Gibbs
Grigg
Hampson
Austin
Benjamin
Anderson

All look to be quality younsters. Expect 4 to make their debuts this year, maybe more.

J I think you have somewhat skewed your analysis in our favour, at least compare like with like.

You killed it according to popular opinion on BF, which is not necessarily representative of what recruiters think.

After Gibbs:

17. Shaun Hampson 201cm, 93kg (for his height, runs like the wind, jumps like a jack in the box)
19. Shaun Grigg, 190cm, 79cm (runs like the wind, dart of a left foot)
35. Mark Austin, 193cm, 88kg (would have played CHB for SA if not injured pre-champs, runs like the wind once at speed :( )
51. Clint Benjamin 189cm, 81kg (runs faster than the wind :D )
67. Joey Anderson 188cm, 81kg (runs like the wind)

All over 189cm, IIRC all in the top 10% in speed in draft camp and all with enormous upside. We drafted for height, speed, versatility work-ethic and character and I htink we got it with every pick.

Having watched the kids prior and post draft having the draft over again, I wouldn't swap our picks other than looking at Houli at #35.

Feel free to mix it up..i didnt really do it in any particular order to be honest..I didnt put stanton in there as even tho he is a youngster he is seen as an established player who would make it in all 16 teams, Lovett also. I found it hard to put in our other draftees or match people up as alot of our kids are in and under grunt players such as Slattery, Nash, Lonergan, Hislop i wasnt sure who was the grunt for you. Then you add to that that our club has drafted alot of high pick KPP such as Bradley, Laycock, Ryder etc..Even Neagle who the club is giving a truckload of time..

Feel free top pick at the essendon list constructively. Id like a nuetral view or two..Your midfeild will be awesome but i do worry about your ruck to be honest..Im not having a go either..just talking..

That's cool mate, at least you are putting forward a fair and balanced view in the spirit of discussion, unlike some of the to$$ers on the Richmond board.

We actually have two developing 200+cm raw but freak athletes in Shaun Hampson and Asiake O'Hailpin. With the new ruck rules combined with the pace of the modern game, I think we have a couple of guys here who could be the epitomy of the top modern ruckman, 200+cm guys with speed, flair and a big vertical leap. You obviously wouldn't seen much of either of them. Even Hampson didn't get much game time in the U18 champs, but has been most impressive at training and in the Bullants practice matches and I dare say he will turn out the next best ruckman out of last years draft after Leuenberger. Asiake being the younger brother of Setanta, is obviously raw but astute watchers of the two claim he is furhter advanced than Setanta was in their respective development. Asaike can also play down back like Setanta, and loves to get the ball and take guys on and charge it out of defense, which is really an amazing sight for a guy of 202cm. He does get himself tangled and caught ocasionally and needs to learn to take the first option. Both he and Hammo most always get first hands on the ball, but just need more experience with some class midfielders as to how to palm the ball to advantage.

Definitely got a few high rated players - though what matters is how they perform from here. Way too early to judge how the draft will turn out, there's a reason why some of the guys rated 1st rounders here didn't go until much later.
