The Doggies are significantly quicker than us and far better by foot and with their ball handling. They do everything quicker because of it. We just need to find the players if we are to play like that or any of the top teams for that matter. There's nothing wrong with how we are trying to play we're just not that capable at this stage. A forward line of players who are really good all round runners with great skills, some medium forwards and a tall or two with great skills and we'll be going well. Actually think our backline is ok but could always be better. Midfield with fast, skilled explosive runners who are really hard at it. Sure we'll be able to play like the bulldogs then. What really scares me about them is that Matthew Suckling, Tom Campbell, Lin Jong, Stewart Crameri, Bob Murphy, Jack Redpath and Mitch Wallace did not play in their premiership side among others. Now that's real premiership depth!

Gun medium sized forwards, gun small midfielders and a really skilful hard running defence. No soft or slow players, no players who can't handle the football or can't kick.

Our path to getting to where they are is to cash in at the draft and play the young players and just be patient. We're a long way off but heading in the right direction.

I think Carlton should follow Bolts path until something proves it can't work.

Heading into last season, I was dreading it but he set the Blues up to compete in more games than I thought we could. It is the small things that matter...for 5 years I have been embarrassed by quite a few of Carlton's games each season (really embarrassed). That number fell a lot (just the games late in the season grated). Starting 2016 he had the least to work with of the last 10 years and outperformed those previous coaches. Our fwd line at the start of 2016 has been the worst since early 2000s.

The only issue i have with Bolts is his repetitive post match spiel. Dude needs to plan his spiels out a bit more as it is painful. Like his messages, but mix it up a bit.

The thing is not to abandon the gameplan that showed promise for a very weak/young list. Let the doggies have their plan, let sydney have their plan; ours needs to suit our list/strengths.

I am a firm believer that playing two rucks is one too many. Replace one with a mid with Cas/Rowe helping the main ruck (who plays 80% on ball).

Playing two big men that have zero impact on the game is the problem. If both ruckmen were contributing and making a difference we would not be arguing this point. Throwing a ruckman into the forward line and hoping or assuming they will do something is flawed. The day of the big marking lumbering forward is over. Small/Medium fast forwards that can break in all directions and run deep into the forward line will be the future. Kreuzer got onto the paddock in 2016 which was a significant win. We need him to start influencing a game by getting into the right spots. We know he can mark, he is mobile and has a tank. Ruckmen take a lot longer to mature, so we have to be patient. I have to say I am becoming concerned with this GWS infatuation. We should be throwing everything at getting Mitchell from Sydney. Put him in our midfield and we start to look dangerous. If the rest of the AFL let Hawthorn get away with picking up Mitchell and O'meara, then they are crazy.

We already have a big lumbering ruckman sized guy in the forward line: Levi.

Kreuzer + Levi is a fine ruck division for the time being. Start looking at Levi and judging him as a relief ruck, bail-out target, etc instead of our spearhead and he looks OK. We need to think of him as ruck and add forwards, rather than as our primary forward the try to shoe-horn a second ruck in too.

I'm ok with having two rucks but they need to actually be able to play forward and not just 'occupy' a F50 arc.

...

When it comes to the forward line, I am definitely more in favour of mobility and flexibility than size. A forward the size of Casboult is great, but limited. One or two smalls, three or four medium sized players (such as C. Curnow and Silvagni) and one big guy like Casboult (and McKay in the future). That's it, besides the occasional resting ruck.

Even occupying space is fine IF they don't interrupt leading patterns AND we have at least two other productive options around them.

They should be there to take a mark against the third best defender or out-sized back pocket if our other forwards can't make an honourable lead, not as a defacto primary target.

Backline:
Small pressure defender - tall gorilla - intercept mark
Rebounding defender - intercept mark - rebounding defender

Midfield:
Ruckman - inside mid - inside/outside hybrid
Outside mid - inside/outside mid - pacy winger

Forward line:
Medium marking forward - athletic tall forward (second ruck) - medium marking forward
Small pressure forward - monster tall forward - small mid/fwd

Bench:
Inside mid - outside mid - small mid/fwd - utility

As it stands, I reckon we've got:

FB: ????? - Rowe - Weitering
HB: Docherty - Plowman - Simpson/Byrne
R: Phillips/Kreuzer - Cripps - Gibbs
C: Murphy - Cuningham - Boekhorst
HF: Curnow - McKay - Silvagni
FF: Sumner - Casboult/Jones - Wright
Bench: Curnow - Buckley - Lamb - White

The ones in bold are the ones I think we should build around, the others should ideally be pushed out or replaced (due to ability, fitness or age) in the next two years by better alternatives.

I've left Tuohy out on the assumption that he probably goes.
Marchbank hopefully replaces Rowe. JGM in the wings, if he comes on one of the others goes forward.
Pickett could do well as that small defender, and would add to our rebound capabilities.
Not sold on Boekhorst and Buckley, but willing to see how they perform over this coming season. If one or both come on, bonza.
Need a better KPF.
Need to improve the bench options.

Agree with this as long as Levi's leg comes good to the point he can spend meaningful time in the ruck to relieve Krooz. I also believe it is crucial to have a third option even if they are only good in an emergency - eg if your main ruck goes down Levi has to ruck virtually all day, Rowe can give him a spell. Admittedly you then have to cover Rowe if he is playing an important role down back, but that can be done for a short spell to give the main ruckman a rest. I just think running two ruckmen neither of whom has much to offer up forward is just too limiting.
