Hi guys,

I am just interested in your views on Carlton's depth this year. The positives I think are:
- depth in (quality) midfield options with Campo, Stevens, Scotland, Johnson, Harford and Hulme. As well as this, a positive sign is also the form or Davies, McGrath, McCormick and Simpson (all midfield options). I believe Davies is the one who will really step up given the chance.
- the strong form of the Northern Bullants (not just based on last weeks belting but they are equal favourite with Port Melbourne and Williamstown to win the VFL)

The negatives:
- no depth in the ruck if we cop an injury. I don't believe Prenda is a good option but I like the look of DeLuca. Hopefully Ricky Mott sparks up to bolster our ruck division.
- no depth in Key Position backmen because Kouta is a while away and Carlos even further. But on a positive I was very impressed with the saw Norman went about his footy, very confident and a bit of poise too.

Appreciate your thoughts...

I think you forgot to mention Jarrad Waite as a midfield option.....but I do agree with you with the point of a lack of talls espically in the back line hopefully Laurence Angwin might be able to fill a key position....here's hoping that Walker turns into another Matthew Pavlich, someone who is big enough to play a key postion but has the pace and stamina to play on ball...here's hoping.

Scrap Hulme for starters, then the midfield looks good!

Disagree here. Hulme is now playing as a second-tier midfielder where he can still play an important role. His toughness and courage can not be underestimated even though his skills can.

Hulmey is fantastic, dunno what you're on about - he and Kenna rock.

Hard at it, capable of playing in tight and have good pace. Hulmey isn't phased by the 6'3" blokes around him... remember he clashed with big Mick against the kangas in 2002? Came off second best, but Mick was nearly knocked out. Blokes like that make the men around them taller (still) and inspired.

I can site numerous times when Hulmey has lifted the team. Kenna has already done it a few times himself.

First time I haven't agreed with you on something - Hulmey is sensational.

We have better players in the twos than him. I like his work ethic but his skills just let him down constantly.

That was two years ago... where we really didn't have any depth at all and back then he was good enough. But since that knee injury is has constantly disappointed with his basic skill errors, turning the ball over often and getting his kicks smothered. I like the bloke and I like the way he goes about his job BUT I'd rather have McCormick, Davies and Campbell play in the seniors than Hulme. These three players have more pace, are far more skilful and don't shirk the issue either.

McCormick especially is a better clearence player - and has had more influence last year than Hulme has. He should be in the seniors before Hulme.

Not denying that at all mate, I think Kenna will have a big future. But Hulme is not good enough; he has his moments, sure, but every other player have theirs. It's just that ever since that collision with Martyn, Hulme has been ineffective... McCormick basically took his place as a midfielder in 2003 where Hulme was no where to be seen.

I'm still willing to give him a chance to play well, but if he keeps on turning over the pill... then why not put in a better player like McCormick and Davies? At least they can influence matches with their disposals.

I like Hulme, but eventually he'll find it very hard to cement a place in our starting 22 this year.

I think he put in last year, had a fair few 20+ possession games. Knee injuries take a while to get over and are accentuated when they're serious and/or the player has an additional stumbling block to get over (in this case the fact that he's the second shortest bloke in the league).

I think you're a little critical of Hulme, he's proven - McCormick is a lot more inconsistent. Hulme would make a lot more 22's than people would care to admit.

true but i think he spent most his time perfecting his skills of making every suporter of other teams hate his gut

every non carlton supporter i know hates his guts

He's struggling for form but he's one bloke you can just never discount... too much value in the packs to drop.

hes been averaging one hard ball get per game this season

really does have value in the packs:rolleyes:

look how many times he turned it over

Pup is holding us back at present. I know he is capable of playing better than he has so maybe he has a few injury niggles or something? Needs to go back to the VFL and recapture form and hunger as a lot of players need to do from time to time. Happy for him to prove me wrong though, always admired the tenacious little bugger.

What has happened to Davies? He has to take the next step and become a senior player by the end of the year. With Davies and McCormick playing well in the two's it will put pressure on people like Hulme and Wiggins to hold their spot, and this is what depth is all about.

It is also good to see French play a couple of good games. He needs to string a few more together to warrant Carlton holding on to him at the end of the year.
