Here is a list of players who play as forwards for Melbourne & the players that miss out have to fit into the Scorpions side... An important thing to remember is that there is a certain number of VFL listed players that must be played each week, I think it is 6 or 8 VFL listed players...

Bate
Davey
Dunn
Fitzpatrick

Green
Gsyberts
Healy
Hughes
Jetta
Jurrah
Johnson
Maric
Martin
McNamara

Miller
Newton
Petterd
Sylvia
Tapscott
Watts
Wona

I have highlighted the tall options above, Casey have recruited Scott Simpson (as a key forward) & last year they had other tall forward options, although I have no idea if they stayed at the club...

It make it extremely hard for some players to get a game in the 1sts, which will hinder their development, assuming Simpson & Newton will almost certainly be picked automatically...

Your thoughts

Yeah, when I first heard about Simpson's recruitment this problem immediately came to mind.

Having said this, players such as Johnson, Martin, Dunn and McNamara are more likely to in other positions on the ground. Watts could well just end up floating around the HFF and wing as well. I'd also expect Fitzpatrick to start the season in the Casey reserves, just because he has a lot of work to go on his frame before he's totally ready for senior football.

I'd be very surprised if Jurrah and Bate made it back down to Casey, so I think whilst the forward line could be a little tall some weeks (especially if Miller came back to VFL level), it shouldn't be too much of a problem with some good management.

Also, the possibility for one or more of these guys to get injured exists, so we should be well prepared if that occurs at some point in the season.

The Casey forward line revolved around MFC players. Usually Newton. Ben Waite? wasn't a bad player but he's a third tall type.

Bate, Jurrah are much no chance to play Casey. Martin and Watts very unlikely.

Hughes third tall. Macnamara back. Paul Johnson is a dud ( i mean a c grade midfielder pretending to be a ruckman). Dunn's not a legit forward.
Miller might be bouncing from seniors to Casey.

Simpson can play a bit in ruck to.

Maybe fwdline revolve around Newton, Simpson, Fitzpatrick.

Miller playing for Casey, Fitzpatrick might have to drop down to reserves.

It is a certainty that Fitzpatrick & Newton will plat in key forward positions. Simpson- they may try him out at CHB- as we need to cover the loss of Faulks whom is rumoured to have left and gone to Willy.

Matt Moore is another of Casey's key forwards who will play every game when fit (struggled badly with injury last year). He should compliment Simpson quite well as he's much more suited to playing close to goal, whereas Simpson plays his best footy as a hit-up workhorse CHF.

My guess at Casey's lineup for Round 1:

B: Bell McNamara Stockdale
HB: Strauss Wall Bartram
C: Bail Maric Blease
HF: MacCreadie Simpson Matthews
F: Newton Moore Tapscott

Ruck: Meeson McKenzie Gysberts

Int: Panozza, Spencer, Dunn, Hughes

Thanks for that feedback, is Panozzo the big key position forward who got a few games towards the end of last season????

FAIR COMMENT -- YOUR TEAM HIGHLIGHTS THAT WE NEED TO GAIN ANOTHER KEY TALL DEFENDER AS MCNAMARA is far too short for full back- Garland may play there initially before gaining full fitness.

You might be thinking of Ben Waite, Panozza's more of a 3rd tall defender type.

Waite missed out on the team I put together for team-balance more than anything. Put him in the forwardline along with Smith, Moore and Newton and it becomes too slow/one-dimensional.

Agree, although while McNamara isn't big enough to play as a key defender at AFL level, he should be able to hold his own there at VFL level. Whether Melbourne want to use him in a role at VFL level he won't play at AFL is another issue though (though they may feel he needs to improve the defensive side of his game and his ability one-on-one).

The bloke I'm talking about, lokks like he has a european background, about 6ft 4" & very solid, played FF/CHF mainly in the 2's, but got some games in the 1sts later in the year.....

The team listed above proves the point I was attempting to make about our KPF, there is no way, that Johnson, Martin & Jamar are all going to play for Melb at the same time, so one has to miss, where does he play at Casey??? Watts is no certainty to fit into the Melb team early in the year, where does he play & therefor who misses out at Casey???

That leaves Fitzpatrick, Gawn, Healy, maybe also Jetta , Bennell & a few other that I can't think of at the moment, that have to be fitted in somehow... A good problem to have, but it is still a problem for their development...

Remember you have to have a certain number of VFL listed players in the team.

I don't see much opportunity for Hughes this year, which is a shame as we will not see what he is capable of...

The 2nds in the VFL ( I would probably rate it very similar to the old under 19 comp) these days it is really only good for players coming back from injury to regain fitness or kids who are only learning to play the game (international recruits or under aged recruits), not a place for senior listed Melb players to rot away...

I am pretty sure that is only for finals the 10/12 rule (10 VFL players/12 AFL listed players). But most clubs try to give a mix becuase in finals time you want those vfl players with seniors experience.

Say we have 44 on our list, 4 are injured, 22 play for Melbourne that leaves with 18 over 2 sides for Casey and you could spread those 18 any which way you would like depending on form and fitness.

Had a look through the casey reports from last year and rounds 8, 9 and 10 we had either 14 or 15 melbourne listde playing senior footy for Casey. We had a lot of injuries after the middle of the year so most of the time after the team was around 50/50 of afl/vfl players.
