Every now and then Ive been cat called by some shiela (probably on her period). I use to take it as a compliment, it use to make me feel good. I use to think free orgasms if we ever catch up.

Not any more though, I'm now very scared I might get r*ped. Seems cat calling is something rapists do. Apparantly, if you don't do something about it, you might get r*ped.

Kind acknowledgment immediately (almost always) defuses these catcalling situations because by accepting their confusion, their comments, the men are acknowledged as human beings which also automatically reminds them that I am a fellow human being—not a sexual object.
.

If we lead with love, love follows. Or at least something less offending than if we chose a negative perception of intention. Most of the time, men aren’t trying to piss us off, they’re trying to acknowledge us while letting us know they exist

Regardless of gender or intent,

Sex sells, it has been used as a marketing strategy (successfully) for half a century. Regardless of gender, these people are just playing out what they're being taught. The phuqwit is the one who judges them and not the cause of the behavior.

Know thy enemy.

But to get back on topic. I only got cat called the other day by a sheila in a passing car. I didn't have the chance to say thank you. Does that mean she might peg me next time? This is really confusing shit.

I've had the impression it's more an American thing.

It is, the woman silently walking through NYC for 4 hours video is pretty telling.

There are some creepy people out there. It must suck to have to deal with that shit every time you walk down the street.

It was pretty embarrassing watching Australian TV shows after this video came out:

Apparently a big bootied latino chick getting some attention when she walked through a neighbourhood of black guys in America is somehow reflective of what Australian women have to put up with in day to day life.

I can understand why its an issue. Call me a dick but I couldn't stand having people calling out to me every time I walk down the street, be it insult or compliment at the very least it would become very annoying. Having to deal with that every day? You would feel like everywhere you go you were being watched. The moments in that video where the two guys followed her for so long, one of them being eerily silent the entire time was very weird.

Another good video

Ah i get it.

Well its her own fault.

If shes a lesbian she should dress more like one.
Man you have some ****ed up views.

They did one of these in Auckland and the woman only got spoken to twice; once for directions and the other time from some Italian bloke who said she was pretty, then apologised for stopping her. She still got checked out a bit, but not as overtly as the NYC one.
Cat calling does still happen in Australia though and can be pretty vulgar. A couple of weeks ago me and some mates (3 guys, 1 girl) went out for lunch. On the way some bloke called out to the girl 'You're gonna be sore tonight, taking on 4!' Obviously that would register on the extreme end of the spectrum of catcalling and would happen too regularly, but it's still indicative of the types of shit women have to put up with.

When you encounter sexist and derogatory opinion pieces like this one about males potentially being rapists because they cat call, you have to question the source they rely on.

Ironic that a video originally meant to demonstrate that cat calling is a bigger issue than people realise and which sought areas they thought would confirm that view(half the video images allegedly shot on a single Harlem street) has actually had the opposite effect. The videos shot in Auckland and Sydney further confirm that.

Yes cat calling does happen. The mainstream view is that this is unacceptable. The idea that middle class women are seriously oppressed by this in the average Australian capital city in areas that are not poverty stricken is laughable and detracts from other more serious issues they are confronted with.

The behaviour of the guy walking silently in her space for the length of time alleged is unacceptable.

If the woman in the video spent 10 hours walking along Wall Street I would guess she would not stand out from the crowd as much(more attractive women in the vicinity) and would not garner much negative attention from the busier wealthier people who frequent that location.

I would be interested to see the results of a male tourist walking the streets of Harlem and similar locations for 10 hours.

I think the point of the video which titled itself as being an experiment conducted in NYC was expecting to demonstrate catcalling in NYC. Sexism isn't the same across the entire world, different places have different levels and examples of sexism.

Also if the video did show her walking down wall street the same way and it didn't garner as much attention as the lower socio-economically placed areas it would only go to highlight the style and level of sexism of lower class areas.

Pretty shit. Go say g'day if you want to try and get in with her. She'll definitely be flattered that way even if she rejects you. But cat-calling... huge space for just making her feel self conscious, embarrassed, and probably intimidated.

This is one of the rersonses to the article in the OP.

This is a very problematic depiction of catcalling...Catcalling is not a compliment its harassment and it reinforces the notion that men have the right to objectify and treat women as sexual objects by dehumanizing, embarrassing and disempowering women publicly through sexualizing their bodies/existence. Catcalling is very much a part of rape culture and when this author says we need to differentiate between "being r*ped in a dark ally" and a "harmless compliment" she is uncritically dismissing how these are relational and actually perpetuate one another. By smiling or telling men that it is okay to treat a women as a sexual object while she walks down the street you're actively reinforcing the power dynamics and patriarchy that sustain injustices toward women. Personally I cannot see how being objectified in a public space is a compliment, flattering or in any way an acceptable means of treating anyone with the respect and dignity they deserve.

I get cat called, i'm male. The attitude above is all to prevalent.
