A number of issues I would like to point out about the way we are currently travelling.
1) We have lost focus. The recent words from the club about expectations etc were in hindsight a little sign that we had taken our eye of the ball. They shouldn't be worried about what they can't control and when the ball is in dispute out on the park what difference does it make.
The other telltale sign was the response after we have won games. The body language was more of relief then joy. When this is the case, you have never played the game in the right state of mind.
2) We are the hunted. This is a load of crap. This is all between the ears. The hunted in football is the bloke with the ball. Last year we were the best at hitting the opposition with everything. We harrassed and pressured like the game had never seen before. We raised the standard and we need to do it again. They can hunt us but when they have the ball or it is in dispute we can hunt them.
3) Thompson thus far has been brilliant. He has tried to express joy and positivity for our wins in an effort to thwart the expectations crap. Harley said we had a great preseason, Thompson reminded him that we started late and it was just ok. Chapman said a 10 day break would help against Essendon, Thompson reminded him it wouldn't make a difference. Cook said we need to sign everyone up, Thompson said focus on the footy and if they want to leave then let them. We may have signed them all up but the standard of footy since has not been great. I love the BT approach.
4) We seem to be playing with an attitude that something needs to be kept in reserve just in case. We are trying to win and until tonight have been successful without giving everything. Maybe we are trying to be too efficient and we should get back to the hard nosed attitude that has got us to where we are in the first place. Eithor they are not as fit as they would like to be or they are subconsciously pacing themselves for the final assault. I say subconsciously because it surely wouldn't be a plan.
5) Our injury losses are starting to show through. We missed the Big O and Egan hugely tonight. Chappy was a huge loss tonight as well. The replacements and younger players were exposed for what they are. No more illusions about our young talent please. We have talent but it helps when you come into a strong winning side.
In my eyes we are still where we were after 8 rounds. A third of the way through a marathon and we are sitting with the leading pack. Nothing more and nothing less. There are still many miles and a huge amount of random events to navigate through. The challenge now is to put into place what was learn't last year. We have lost and we should review and forget. Everyone needs to be up and about by Monday and in a positive frame of mind. It is time again to clear the head and focus and give everything against the blue baggers next week. Nothing else matters.
