Looking for a program that will run on Windows 98, which rips from CD to hard drive in mp3 format.

Downloaded dbpowerAMP - it loads the tracks onto my hard drive, but playback is all scrambled.

I used to have an older version that worked well, but lost it when I had to make some changes to my computer

Downloaded CDex - click on the desktop shortcut, and I get a blue screen (fatal error has occurred).

Any better programs out there?

I use CDex which didn't seem to work for you, I see. I find it VERY easy to use, and I'm a computer gumby. It was recommended to me by another on this board, so you may find my thread on this if you go back a few pages.

I'd recommend contacting techsupport with CDex, it would be worth it IMO.

I tried to get iTunes to work, and it will burn a CD, but then will not play that CD (error 50). Frustrating, because the interface is rather nice.

Tried FreeRip, worked fine on most occasions... still the occasional blue screen though - copy protection issue maybe? There's one particular double-CD it refused to rip.

Thanx for the suggestions folks, when I have time I'll hopefully get around to trying all of them.

Darky,

Have a look at the link below - it's taken from the CDEX forum, and the blue screen of death (BSOD) error you received is a known issue with a fix.

Alternatively download an earlier version eg 1.4.

How do I know this?

I used to be a big CDEX user last year, but don't have it installed on my current pc.
I just downloaded it, and experienced the same thing you did.

CDEX is a great product (even though I haven't need to use it for quite some time!)

Try it again.

FreeRip MP3

I've used FreeRip on NT4, 2000 and XP without any problems. It is dead simple to use and has always done the job. The only caveat is that it is adware (it openly admits this) though only in a benign manner.
