I'm unconvinced at this harsh welfare policies is the vote winner that it once was. The current work environment is such that people can see that they're working payday to payday and realising that they're a misstep or small downturn away from being on the dole queue themselves, and we've got both ACOSS and the Business Council saying that it's patently inadequate. Labor are typically weak on this too, a roots and branch review sounds like code for kicking the issue down the road.
I turn 50 next month, I have a wife and 2 school aged kids. If I lose my job / get made redundant for whatever reason, I'm under no illusions, I'll be farked.
Without a trade or formal qualifications things would be extremely tough. I have done shit jobs in the long ago past to tide me over in between more meaningful employment. I've dealt with clueless young 20 somethings in the past at employment agencies and I've dealt with clueless HR types with my current employer when looking at internal transfers. I don't fit into any preferred demographic. The outlook for me would be bleak.
At some point, something's got to give, we can't continue on our current path, we just can't afford the ballooning welfare bill anymore. We need a completely new plan and new ideas, hopefully one that includes non-paying corporations ponying up.
