Newbie here, so forgive me if this has already been discussed on a separate thread. Given that I live interstate, all I have to go on is the media releases coming out of the AFC, and I'm hoping some of you guys can offer more in the way of insight.

The development of VB, Knights, Maric and to a lesser extent Meesen has been well documented. That leaves one forgotten draftee from 2004 - Chad Gibson.

At draft time he was being compared to Jonathon Brown (we wish), with his size and ability to split the packs open at CHF.

The pre-season reports coming out of Adelaide were less promising. Gibson was last on all the team runs, and struggling to come to grips with the fitness requirements of AFL footy.

According to the "Crows in the SANFL" page on the AFC website, he spent the whole season in Norwood's magoos and never threatened to break into the Redlegs' league side.

The only description I have seen of him on this bulletin board is "raw".

My questions are these:
Has he gone forwards or backwards with his development in 2005?
Will he make it as an AFL footballer?
If so, how much "development time" does he require before he will be ready to make his mark?

Ok...

When we picked him up we all knew he was going to take a lot of time. Sure, he has the body, but his raw instincts meant that we would have to wait AT LEAST 2-3 for Chad to be ready.

He's not a great overhead mark, he's not the most skilled player going around and sometimes he makes the wrong decisions at the wrong times. However, his upside is so good that all of these can be improved dramatically with time.

Has he gone backwards in 2005? Probably, but then you could say the same thing about Meesen, Nye and Jericho. I didn't expect him to have a great year and I don't too much more next year.

Will he make it? I think he will. Despite his size he's got the potential to become a pack-busting, long kicking CHF/FF. In fact, liken him to Daniel Merrett. Both raw, both has amazing athletic qualities for their size, both are huge at a young age. Merrett's shown so far that it can be done. I reckon Chad will suprise a few, that's for sure.

you got that right Bockchoy67, Nye certainly went backwards. :D

i think the thing to remember with chad gibson is that he is bottom age. he is only 2 months older than marcus drum, and only a couple of months older than many of this years draftees. time is well on his side.
