As a matter of rule, the normal thought is that trading in the first 3 weeks is a waste

Well, I reckon that it is time to challenge that theory

I went into 2012 with a plan to use 4 trades in the first 2 weeks, and maybe even 6 in 3 weeks if needed.

Why would I do that?

Every year you take a chance on rookies and this year, probably some mid pricers eg Lake, Dempsey, Bower, Clarke, Porpoise, etc

the problem is that if you miss the first pay rise at the end of week 3, you limit a method of cashing in on dollars that will be sorely neededlater in the season

I have already got rid of Yagmoor and brought in Dempsey. I will also get rid of Hall in the FWD's and bring in that rookie from the Saints at the end of this week.

I also reckon I have been suckered by Heath Shaw ( will get a better return cheaper from Alex Rance given how the Tigers are set up this year).

I may also do the unthinkable and trade out a premium (mummy) for Sandi this week also. Mummy already shows signs of not being on the park all year and I can't risk that

Once that is all settled, I have nothing to do (unless massive injuries) until the rookies all flatline around Round 11

So let's say maximum 8 trades used by Round 11, and plenty left for the second half of the year. However, I will have a very solid team and cash in the bank

You thought prompts was king last year with some of his ballsy moves? Follow the crowd, and you become the crowd

I think I agree. I'm starting to think that Broughton is over hyped, Martin is a question mark but to be fair he has faced two great teams. I'll also look at getting rid of Caddy this week.

I don't think it's worth waiting for weeks to see if your players pan out when something isn't working, fix it straight away.

The thing is, the opening rounds aren't always a great indicator of things to come. Form in the first two rounds may turn out to be exceptions as opposed to the norm.

Got to balance your team firstly. If you've made obvious mistakes then it's only right that you fix them whether that's rd 2 or rd 3. There is the danger that a dud could blossom though. You'd be disappointed if you trade out lake.

Regarding the first post re Mumford - what signs? Just that he did not play this week? And do you think Sandi will play all year? I reckon he'll be rested, if he don't pick up and injury.

Merino? Wheres that come from :o

I'm a fan of corrective trades but not fiddling for the sake of fiddling. The rookies don't seem to be especially fantastic early so getting the right ones will be important for long term success. Those who have hit the right mid pricers are reaping the benefits right now.

24 trades this year is handy and the ability to triple trade during the byes will be interesting. You'd imagine alot of pre emptive cow culling during 8, 9 n 10 for a bit of damage control during the bye rounds.

You guys have got me worried about Mumford? What signs are you talking about?

personally I'm more worried about Cox. His scores are way down on what he should get vs Doggies(110 would have been 90 if not for two goals) and Dees(89 and didn't kick one goal eventhough margin was 108 points). He is being compromised by Nic-Nat in the ruck and Kennedy,Lynch and Darling up forward. He's in good form,it's not that,it's these 4 players taking his points.
I'd keep Mummy,he's the main ruck at Swans and will bounce back. Cox on the other hand SHOULD go well vs GWS this week but after that? What happens when he plays good teams/rucks when he hasn't scored well against two teams he usually smashes?

I missed Curnow in my initial team last year but stuck to my no trade plan even tho he killed it in the first 3 rounds.

I made the 8(just) in most of my decent leagues, with plenty of trades in hand. But not trading in Curnow cost me at least an extra premium given how much cash he made.

Was the difference in the end, bowed out in the prelim.

In the old days when we only had 20 trades, it payed to play it safe. With 24, honestly i don't think a couple of early trades will hurt too much

I am going to back my lads in. Broughton, Heater, Hall and Dickson. Sure the two rookies wont go up much but there are 18 teams so I reckon I will be able to do a dump load of trading anyways.
Im going to keep my trades as long as I can.
Its a long year.

Panic bells are ringing :o

If my Cox/Mumford combo is my biggest problem, I'm going great guns.

I think spending a few trades in the first three weeks to correct a mistake/jump on board a must-have rookie is a smart and appropriate action.

I think those who bailed on Broughton or Scotland or Martin or these types of players are morons. Broughton and Scotland won me my opening league game last week, and I think both will end up being damn close to top 7 scoring defenders by the end of the year. If they slightly fail to live up to that, they're still going to average 75-90 p/g and be only a minor, late upgrade away from the top defenders late in the year if I want to "complete the set".

As for Dusty, he's within a month of a slashing 140-odd, I'm sure. Might have me a few points back 6 weeks in, but I'll make it all up in huge strides over the last month as people run out of trades. I do every year. :)
