memo to all , anyone , board , afl

we mustb have 2 verses to sing to after games

Hearts to Hearts
and
Join in the chorus

walking out of the G to sing along with some 18 year olds and my kids not to mention my wife ( ex richmond )

was just so proud of our club and supporters.

how good would it be to have both verses over the speakers and tv for those at home .

Can't say I object.

Okay, fine.

But please, don't make this into another one of those ebola-annoying club song sing along threads. So shit! That's coom-by-yah, poxy, christian campfire sing-a-long stuff.

ok fine , The song should be reserved for after a winning game anyway .

And for some stupid reason after the game you don't see the boys sing the song in the rooms .

I like the suggestion but am not fussed with just the Join the Chorus after the game.

The problem i have is that after the song had been repeated once, maybe twice, instead of playing our song again and even again they think that playing a track of rock music is more appropriate.

While i have nothing against rock music, i remember the days when u would walk out of the MCG and could still hear your team song being played even when you had reached the carpark.

Are the MCG copying the domes policy of only playing the team song a couple of times.

While its not a massive issue, it bloody annoys me, especially after a tight win over a side like collingwood!

I assumed it was to clear us out.

If anything needs changing it's the last verse.

Put this in: "North Melbourne will be premiers just you wait and see" instead of "North Melbourne is the team that plays to win for you and me".

There's a lot of confusion out there when the song is played and when people sing it.

What are your thoughts?

Boggled.

Premiers , is that the original version ?

That's the newer version. That was the version i grew up learning and singing. I only started hearing the one i hear now at games.

All the boys at the club sing the newer version. Just listening to the boys singing the song, they definately sing the "North Melbourne will be premiers just you wait and see verse"

Well I'm only early-mid 20's and I grew up hearing 'team that plays to win for you and me'.

Don't mess with the classics!

Anything less would be the equivalent of a crappy boyband cover.

Why don't we just send it down to Australian Idol and get them to butcher it?

I actually reckon the last line was changed in 1993, to "North Melbourne will be premiers in 1993".

Pretty sure prior to that it was the standard line. Then watching them change the year after that was funny, because only 1993 actually rhymed, and then they eventually dropped the year, and went with the "just you wait and see".

Why do we need to when it's already on records at the club?

I think you are right, Arden, about the song being changed in 1993.

Your right. I remember in 1996 it was "North Melbourne will be premiers in 1996" & 947, 98, 99. It seemed to stop there.

The original verse which I learnt in the '50s was "will be premiers, just you wait and see", but after North got Courage in the '70s and won its first flag, the verse lost some of its explicit meaning, and we got "the team that plays to win for you and me". Not sure just which year it changed but I think it was "plays to win for you and me" by 77.

From The North Story, Gerard P. Dowling, 1973 edition.

Hearts to hearts and hands to hands,
Beneath the Blue and White we stand,
We shout God bless our native land-
North Melbourne, North Melbourne,

Out they come, out they come, out they come to play,
We train so hard, we play the game, we must win every day,
Lots of fun, heaps of fun, enjoy yourself today,
North Melbourne boys are hard to beat when they come out to play.

Chorus:
So join in the chorus and sing it one and all,
Join in the chorus, North Melbourne's on the ball,
Good old North Melbourne, we've champions by the score,
North Melbourne will be striving onwards to the four

Wait a second. "North Melbourne will be premiers" is one syllable short for the line. You'd have to sing premiers as a three-syllable word to make it fit the music.
