Anyone bagging Kelly had better watch the Hawthorn match again - he was brilliant! I agree that Varcoe needs to lift his game - I would have thrown him on Rioli to see what would happen. Remember Andrew Mackie was kinda shithouse when we played him as a forward - it was only down back where he found his mojo.

Maybe Varcoe is being played in the wrong possie.

Doesn't Tom Hawkins like playing against Richmond? I seem to remember him kicking a few in 2007 when we smashed them.

I suppose Varcoe is in there for 'forward line pressure' but he needs to kick more goals, so maybe trying him in defense is not a bad idea. Not that Bomber seems to try things like that very often.

As for Kelly, I was one that criticised him, but he did very well.

I think Kelly is one of those few players who will get better within a certain role as he ages. Bloody hard nut who has good ball use ability but has probably been played as a utility too much over the last few years. Would love to see him define a role on the HB or even Back Pocket as he definately could service a specific role and be the better for it!

I hope we play both Hawkins and Lonergan - Loner's gets unfairly criticised a lot of the time and is actually looking allright out there at the moment. NAB cup final was brilliant, and he wasn't that bad against Hawthorn, unlucky to give away a crucial free in the last quarter against roughead. Think we could really use another tall down back judging on a few of Milburn and Taylor's contested marking efforts - Lonergan needs to be played there to find out if he can match it with some better guys. Put him on Richardson if he pushes forward - the best contested marking player in the game. That would be a great test.

Hawkins not only should be in this week, they should tell him he'll be given a number of games. It's time to see whether he cuts it or not. He's got so much going for him ability wise. Just not sure about his temperament.

I'd like to see a few youngsters given a go too. Hogan and Djerrkura are two.

Totally agree about Hawkins. Totally disagree about Hogan and Djerrkura. For one thing - who are you going to drop? Kelly played a pretty good game Friday night, there's no way he should be demoted. I'm not sure Hogan or Djerrkura have done anywhere near enough to warrant inclusion yet.

As for Scarlett, if he's fit he plays. Senior selection is not something to be treated lightly, for the first time in our memory we have an extremely talented and experienced team. I love the fact it's really difficult for younger guys to gain selection. They should know that it has to be earned, and you have to perform immediately. And no one demonstrates the standards required better than Scarlett. He has to play.

Assuming everyone comes up, the only change would be Hawkins in for Lonergan. Lonergan has had 3 games against Hawthorn now and performed poorly each time. Hawkins has to take that spot.

Realistically there's only two players who will/should come under the microscope, they being Varcoe and Lonergan, with Byrnes and Hawkins their possible replacements.

I'd personally bring TH in for TL, not real sure about the other switch though, probably Varcoe deserves another chance, and I highly doubt he'll be dumped after just one game anyway.

Completely agree with Partridge about team selection, put our best twenty two out there whenever possibly, don't just play younger blokes simply for the sake of it but make them really earn their spot, plus there's always bound to be injuries along the way and they can get their chance then, heck Prismall couldn't break into the side with any regularity and I don't see anyone at the moment who looks more capable then him.

Next cab off the rank is still Shannon, as much as I know that grieves a lot of people.

I agree with the principle what you are saying. Having said that we also need to be mindful of giving our younger batch of players some senior experience. We currently have a list with quite a distinction in "games played" between our senior group and our players aged under 21. Other than Selwood we hardly have a player that has played a game in this age category.

Whilst mediocity should not be rewarded (i.e. Djerkurra) I reckon that Hogan has done enough to deserve a game. I would also be a little concerned with our ever thining back stocks. Perhaps giving Laidler some senior experience during the year may be prudent against a lower ranked team in case he is needed come finals time.
