I know it's early, and Bendigo haven't played yet, but I want some discussion going. This is the side I'd like to see:

Fletcher-Pears-Myers
Hardingham-Hooker-Hibberd
Stanton-Watson-Heppell
Crameri-Hurley-Reimers
Jetta-Carlisle-Winderlich
Ryder-Hocking-Zaharakis
Bellchambers-Howlett-Melksham
Colyer (sub)

Emer: Hille, Lonergan, NLM

That means:

In: Bellchambers, Winderlich, Hibberd
Out: Hille, Davey, McVeigh

Oh and ftr, I am delibrately trolling you guys

i would like to keep the faith in Davey for a while yet but cant really see who would come out to get him in & yes agree Bellchambers needs to come in & Hille out

My opinion of Davey differs day to day. Today I say he's necessary because of defensive pressure, but tomorrow I'll tell you he's useless and runs around like a headless chicken.

What I want is someone at least as good as 2007 before his injury.

No Dempsey? And will Winders and Lonners be OK for Round 1?

Davey is surely on his last chance. If he doesn't perform in the first few games, he should go.

Id have something pretty similar - & I agree Hille, Davey, McVeigh may not be in, but Monfries will play for sure.
Id leave Winders out - I think you'll find they'll ease him along given hes had numerous injuries over the years now..Lonergan & Dempsey will not be rushed either but any all of these 3 will feature in 2012 you'd think.

Fletch Pears Hibberd
Hardingham Hooker Heppell
Stanton Watson Melksham
Zaka Hurley Reimers
Monfries Carlisle Crameri

Ryder Hocking Howlett

Bench from Myers Colyer T.Bell Jetta

Emergency Lonergan Dempsey Winderlich

I don't think he'll be ready, and if he plays it should only be as sub. Winders was fit for Bendigo's final, so I'm assuming he and Lonners will be fit.

Not the first and I'm sure it won't be the last best 22 type thread, but I'll have a crack.
Will go on the assumption that only Pris is unavailable. Dempsey and Winders will more than likely be ready to go.

FF---Crameri--Ryder----Jetta
R----Tbell-----Hocking- Zaharakis
Int---Heppell--Howlett--Lonergan

Emg--Hooker Hibberd Hille McVeigh

Not as hard as I thought. Only the 4 I listed as emergency, particularly Hooker, were unlucky IMO not to be there. Although will probably all be there come R1 given availability.
On the Hooker front, if all fit, can anyone see all of Fletch, Hooker, Pears, Carlisle playing in defence together? Especially given all of Myers, Dempsey, Hardingham, Hibberd all also play reasonably tall?
NB For the purposes of the argument I'm assuming all spots are taken up forward.

Cleverly* disguised Best 22 thread.

*arguable
Not a best 22 thread. A "changes" thread. And it's not really my best 22, my best 22 would have Dempsey in it instead of Hibberd, I'm just unsure if he'll be fit

Disagree strongly on Hooker. He's ahead of Carlisle on many levels. I'm guessing they are projecting Carlisle to play full time from 2013 onwards if Fletch goes at the end of next year.

mmmmm One too many on the bench. I don't know who to go with. At this stage Howlett is more dependable then Jetta but I think Jetta has a higher ceiling of capabilities so it will depend on their preseasons. I'm hoping that it is Jetta. Of course Davey could be dropped and Jetta to the forward line but I want to see him step up become a midfielder and be someone to add pace as well as good work in traffic.

Surprising that everyone would drop McVeigh.

Yes, I know he's nearing the end, but he hardly had a bad year in 2011; in fact, he didn't miss a game. It's hard to believe he played 23 games from Hird playing favourities; no, he was a getting a game because, by and large, his form was solid. He had a shocker or two, sure. But the two in my mind that stick out (v Hawthorn and the final against the cheats), he wasn't exactly alone in having a shocker.

So no, I wouldn't drop him yet. I would, however, drop Davey.

As for the guys returning from injury- yes to Lonergan and Winderlich, maybe to Dempsey. Only problem might be finding a spot for both Lonergan and Howlett.

Oh, and if Hooker is fit, a spot needs to be found for him. An in form and firing Hooker is way too good to be running around in the magoos.

Looked ****ing horrible last night, no speed or intensity, going fwd really not good enough for the starting 22 imo.

In an International Rules game no-one seemed to give a **** about, under a coach who got sacked during the year, and in a team who got their pants pulled down past their ankles? Hardly a measure of performance for the start of next year.

Wait till the pre-season comp. He'll be right. :thumbsu:

Yeh fair enough, Hooker's ahead of him for now. Maybe not for long though. This is why I posed the question I did, as I would love for us to find a way to fit them both in. I'm quite sure they want to get as many games as they can in to Carlisle now though, not once/if Fletch retires.
Moot point I guess, not like Fletch, Pears, Hooker, Carlisle, Hurley and 2 rucks will all be fit at the same time, ever.

Hypothetical best 22's, people always miss that never would in reality, because we never have best 22 available.
As such, McVeigh I'm sure will be picked R1 and for the rest of the year no doubt.
However, if we are picking best 22, I think Dempsey, Myers pick themselves and I'd have Hardingham/Hibberd barely in front of Mcveigh as well.

You cant judge anybody by that match but the thing is he seems like a one dimensional player he needs to add another string to his bow

Not just judging him on that game alone, agree with the above statement & tossed up whether he'd be an ok small defender (good mark & knows how to milk a free) but really he's too slow too inconsistent & lacks the intensity to impact the contest.
Unfortunately i think he peaked a couple of yrs ago & is borderline best 22 now.

Bellchambers is the number 3 ruckman, cant see him starting ahead of hille while hille is still playing... too early to say what the rest of the team will look like, hopefully Winders and dempsey are right for rd1

I really hope we can fit that many talls into the side. Three tall backs, Hurley as stay at home KPF, Gumby/Carlisle as lead up KPF and two rucks. That shouldn't be too tall and it allows for some flexibility. Like I said I hope that Gumby can get his body in order and Carlisle can go back and play Fletcher's role after he retires.
