Why did we bother giving Monfries a contract if we're not going to play him after three consecutive 30-ish possession games and after a player in a comparable position gets injured?
If we don't play Monfries this week then it is doubtful he will get an AFL game at all this season and then be delisted at the end of the year. So in answer to your question, we gave him a contract for the feel good factor after he was forced out of the game for 12 months because of the Essendon doping program.

Edit: Just saw Coobk001's post above so maybe Monfries is not as deserving of a call up as I thought.

Did you not see Ahchee in the middle last year.. barely got near it. We've all seen what Gray can do in the middle..
Two things...
1) that is not what you said... You said he was too small for the job
2) the whole team was crap 12 months ago!!!! On that philosophy no one gets an opportunity!

Twelve months is a long time in the development of a young footballer. He deserves his shot.

Frampton after his huge 6 touch, and smashed in the ruck game???

People need to get over this Frampton stuff, kids still got a future but he's absolutely 100% not ready yet.

Agreed, Wild Billy is still miles off AFL standard, unless we are decimated with injuries in the 2nd half of this season I doubt we will see him in a Power jumper before next year's trial games at the earliest.

He's racked up possessions but they've been super cheap, incredibly ineffective touches from chip chip in the backline play. And even a bunch of them he's turned over.
How he was rated in our best on the weekend is beyond me, he was pure and simple kick chasing and had no impact on the game.

Whoa hang on there. In Saturday's game against the highest pressure opposition the Magpies have faced this year Monfries had 28 disposals at 86% disposal efficiency and his 9 contested possessions was second among Port players only to Matt White with 11. He also laid 3 tackles and kicked a goal.

Even Young who appeared to me to be really in the thick of the action only had 7 contested possessions and his overall disposal efficiency was 50%.

You can guarantee that if given the opportunity, Monfries will play out of his skin. We've given a spot to much less deserving players before.

Watching him closely it seems Port aren't sure whether they want an athletic forward/part-time ruck or a traditional ruck/part-time forward with Billy.

His centre bounce ruck technique is almost non-existent and he doesn't have the real core hip/thigh power of a genuine ruckman. Even Marshall looks stronger through the core than Billy. Billy is an even more raw version of a Trengove type ruck who hunts the lost centre bounce contest.

I guess it's a question of whether Port want to sacrifice some of his agility/athleticism to make him more of a ruck option. At the moment his chances of a league call up are much more reliant on his forward presence.

What do you think of him morphing into a sort of Westhoff role?

Westhoff is freakishly agile for a guy his size, I'm not sure that is really appreciated. Frampton is not in that class. Howard is more likely as a floating tall who can ruck. I was amazed at Howard's turn of speed on Saturday. A 200cm ruck/KPP/KPD coming off a knee reco. For real?

It's genuinely puzzling that we chose to sign Monfries (30) and Eddy (27) but don't play them and instead opt to play a plethora of 'players who aren't quite good enough to play midfield at AFL level' as makeshift forwards.

That sounds about right, 19 cheap touches, kicking around in the back half, hit 17 targets, you're going at 90% from the easiest possessions possible, turn over a couple and they cost goals. I reckon about 9 contested and actual game impacting possessions does reflect his game accurately.

Well I hope we find a role for him soon. Frampton has something special about him.

Noticed on Sportsday SA last evening They brought up the topic 'Is Wingard's injury due to the long trip back from Shanghai?" lel
Ever since someone discovered the condition deep vein thrombosis people have been throwing this around as a possible reason for anyone returning from a trip having an injury.

Did Angus run over your dog or something? :p

impey doesnt have the instinct to play as a genuine midfielder, i think his best position is using his speed to play as a defensive forward and keep the ball in. Most probably have him on Touhy to nullify his run out of defence.

Monfries in the guy that will kick 3 goals from 5 disposals and people under estimate how good a lead-up player he is for his size, I think if Dixon & Monfires are the 2 leadup players then you will create a lot of one-on-one contests as Monfries has the brains to lead to the right areas and draw an opponent even if Dixon doesnt

On Impey, WTF are you talking about? Instinct? Man o man

On Monfries, didn't you just argue that AhChee was shit even though he kicked 3 goals because that's all he did (even though you were just pain wrong)?

Oh yeah I'm a big fan. He's in a tough spot at the moment because he has at least Trengove in front of him as support to Ryder (not to mention Dixon and Westhoff pinch-hitting in ruck) and I suspect Howard would be next in line for a shot at the title.

I would not be surprised if the WA clubs were sniffing around especially as Port also has Ladhams waiting in the wings.

You've really just used "instinct" as blanket way of saying Impey can't play midfield. What "instinct" does he lack? I could accept "he doesn't have the engine", but "he doesn't have the instinct"? He's a footballer who has speed, good evasiveness, and a great defensive side to his game. What "instincts" does he lack?
he lacks plenty of instinct of being able to find the footy, the difference between the really good midfielders is the ability to be in the right place at the right time, there are plenty of slow spuds who can rack up possession because they have great ability to know where the ball is going and to be in that position and it doesnt matter if that is being on the inside or the outside of the contest. If you put Impey into the midfield he's the type of guy who would get 15 disposal as opposed to 25 disposals with his direct opponent having a field day. I agree he has great speed, evasiveness etc but that doesnt translate into a good midfielder, his best work is as a receiver or applying defensive pressure

i said ahchee was average, i didnt say he was bad, i didnt even say to drop him i was just saying he's most probably on the fringe of the best 22 (which is were the coaching staff have him or they would've been playing him all year). On Monfries he has a lot more brownie points in the bank than what ahchee has

Impey has great potential, his greatest faults are his inability to constantly find the ball as well as constantly burning the ball once he has it. I think he could be a top 10 afl player if he can fix those 2 things up
