So having a Damascene experience means you lack integrity. Other than what that says about St Paul, there goes the opportunity for change and growth in the Exeter household.

"When is it acceptable to do so? In year 1 or year 10?"

No, Exeter, we all left school a while ago. From what I gather, apparently it's acceptable to no longer support Essendon when you, well, no longer support them (Mr Q). Or it's acceptable to leave behind your WAFL team that you "fully and vocally supported" when the WCE get pretty big and difficult to ignore (Carny). Or maybe you aren't leaving them, maybe you're just not "fully and vocally supporting" them.

Who knows? But the switch has been made. There seems to be an integrity shortage around here, Exeter.

I haven't switched camps. Ever. I don't know what it's like or what goes on. I know that a heap of my co-religionists have. I know that a heap of WCE supporters also have - but, of course, despite what you think "support" means, there are degrees of support, and the WCE supporters didn't really support their old teams. The now-Fremantle supporters are obvious degenerates who you couldn't trust with your children. The now-WCE supporters are merely exercising a fulller or perhaps more vocal support.

Is that how it works?

Religious experience is a fraud of the highest order. Except for the 1995 WAFL Grand Final.

The Exeter household is a benevolent dictatorship. My wife couldn't give a toss about footy but my children are free, as my son has done - I'm working on my daughter, to follow the Cardies and the Eagles with parental fervour.

Yes, there are degrees of support. Like you I choose to support my teams to the hilt - and have never so much as looked at another team.

Back Pocket's post was a good 'un and I thought probably summed up the substance of the debate. Yes people can change their support - but you'll get a damn sight more respect if you nail your colours to the mast from day one as opposed to coming out some ways down the track.

Silly comparison.

Fitzroy fans had their true love taken away from them, Sera walked out of a bad relationship, and is about to discover what true love and passion really is.

I should emphasise that I was only talking about my theory as to why people got off their VFL sides when the Eagles started. The WAFL is a different kettle of fish altogether.

I don't know precisely why people got off their WAFL sides for the Eagles, to be honest. I know VoR actively follows both teams but occasionally at the risk of his driver's licence, so maybe time considerations are a factor. Maybe it was just a gradual thing - the relationship was strong enough that we could see other people.

PS: The Damascene conversion was being written about in the Christian version of the Fremantle Yearbook. St Paul might have gotten a completely different treatment in, say, Soaring.

What kind of a weird relationship is that, Carny? As soon as you start seeing other people at the same time, you're cheating. Best to cut all ties with the old, used nagging and unwanted, and run with the fresh, new, fun and desirable, um, footy team.

I don't know whether I'm lacking in morals or you are...what are you doing Saturday Night?

This forum really ****es me off at times! I go on an Arsenal forum (as im a gunner fan) and there are predominantly Arsenal fans although there is also some Manchester United fans, and they are the biggest of rivals. Although the attitude between rival supporters is much different to this one, I come on here and know that if a Dockers supporter has posted it will drop a negative comment about WCE and if an Eagles supporter posts there is usally one aimed at a dockers supporter, no not with every post, I think the forum would be a much better place if rival fans could discuss issues and happenings without slagging of eachothers team. I'm not saying you shouldn't be passionate although I feel it makes the forum a happier place and gives it a community like feel... anyway, i'm sure you'll all think I'm dribbling sh*t.

Here Here.

Some people who don't support the Eagles, come to the Eagles board simply to make snide remarks and slag off the club, I would imagine it goes both ways as there are some Eagles fans that make me cringe on here too.

They don't bring anything to the board, infact, when I see their names, I roll my eyes, assuming its just another crap post on a board that should be for constructive conversation between fans of the Eagles. Yes, there are definately Dockers fans who are quality posters who visit this board, but sadly they are cancelled out by the amount of tedious, sniping posters.

In general, yeah it doesn't exactly make this board for West Coast supporters a better place...

As far as jumping teams goes, I couldn't give a flyer, if you don't want to support the Eagles, fine, you don't want us, then we sure as hell don't want you.

I'm not sure what Exeter is trying to achieve by starting this thread but I want to dispel a few myths being said about me. There was no dummy spit, it has nothing to do with what happened in the ‘Rd 1 vs Bulldogs' thread, in fact what happens on here has next to no impact on my life, and I certainly wouldn’t change my mind of anything because of something posted here. I would be surprised if anyone did. And its not bandwagon jumping because both teams are equally placed to do well in 2004. If you don’t want me to post here because I’m some kind of heretic who should be ostracized by people everywhere… then I won’t. So before you all call a public hanging in Forrest Chase, or a public drowning off Rottnest, lets not forget that my treachery relates to the game of football and not an act of terrorism. And to those I talked to with PM, I still consider you all my friends and hope we remain so. This will be my only post in this thread. Good luck to both clubs in 2004. Bon voyage.

I've missed all the circumstances that have led to this thread, so none of the following is aimed at Sera who is entitled to make her own decisions about her life and who she supports.

But I would like to support Exeter's comments as he is obviously a well-balanced West Perth and West Coast Eagles supporter who believes in loyalty, integrity and the lifelong passion that is integral to following a football club (gotta stick up for your own).

FWIW, most of the people I know who have switched teams in the same competition have been very deficient in the ticker department, stalkers of individual players or tossers like that Geelong4eva git who ended up supporting Carlton of all teams. I'm trying to think of someone who's shown such treachery who I liked but unfortunately I can't think of one.

Perhaps I'm biased because of my upbringing, but in 30 odd years I have never considered switching from Spurs to Arsenal (and yes, my team would have won a lot more if I had). It's less likely than the Pope turning up with a blue and white scarf at an Old Firm derby because football is more important than religion.

I’ll probably miss the Eagles in some ways… I think I will definitely miss watching Chris Judd play… and their premierships have given me great pleasure in the past… but I feel its now time to move to greener fields. I don’t know what the future holds and I may end up hating it but at the very least I would like to give it a try and if it doesn’t work out I can always go back…"

My god... I think I am going to be sick. How the hell can you just swap teams like that? What the f@#k does "I don’t know what the future holds and I may end up hating it but at the very least I would like to give it a try and if it doesn’t work out I can always go back…" mean. Just a question.... how old are you? Because I could maybe understand if you were 14.... and had been following the Eagles for only a year or two.... but you said the premierships have given you great pleasure? Like hell they have... if they did they would have made you fall in love with the club for life.

I liken it to my love of Leeds United.... initially I didn't have a soccer team I followed.... I followed Leeds because they had Australian players like Viduka and Kewell there..... and have loved them for nearly 4 years now....... Kewell has left... Viduka will be going soon and Leeds are about to be relegated into Division 1..... but it would make me sick to the guts to even think of supporting another side I have grown up to hate.

It's beyond comprehension that anyone could even think of swapping teams and if you are it just proves that you were never in love with the club in the first place...... and you are exactly the sort of supporter I want to see at the Dockers..... because you'll soon be sick of them too. Good Riddance.

This thread is starting to remind me of the joke about the son in the collingwood family that decided to support carlton.

As much as it pains me to weigh in on this debate here is my 2.2c worth (GST included).

Firstly Sera ....whatever dont take cyberinsults too seriously, Buzz and I started slaying each other and ended up respecting each other (I think?) Nearlyblonde thought I was a trash talking, slack jawed yokel and well ....actually let me just move on to at end of the day do what you want to do.

Personally there is changing teams and then there is changing teams. I'm a West Perth fan and deliberately stayed off the Eages waiting for either West Perth to enter the VFL (it was rumoured) or the South of the River team (I'm from Gosnells) ...either way it was going to be the team for me.

I went around with a team for a while (Geelong and I swear we only held hands) but I fell in love with Freo (or a penguin).

Mish argues very well, however in this case it appears on the surface that a strong case could be made for bandwagon jumping ....it would be interesting to know if Sera would make the leap if we were stone motherless last? If the answer is yes - then maybe I'm wrong.

Do I like it ....sorry nope smacks of disloyality. If one of our purple brethern did it, I would take the same line as Carny, Ex etc. If my Dad changed (South Freo supporter) now that would make sense - he even acknowledges that he is upsetting the ancestors (but I am a West Perth supporter in a South Freo family - so we have agreed it is just ying and yang balancing our lives).

Just so I am not on Carny's and Mundines side 100%, let me just say I have always argued with the E-girls at work who confront me with the fact of "look at how many people go for us compared to you", with put us in the top 4 ...you in the bottom 4 and there would be a swing of 5,000 -10, 000 and then we will be saying "look at all our fans" (the WAFC will be saying who cares).

To be honest I worry it will dilute the hard core element of our club, however the extra $1 - 2 mill should cushion our pain.

Sera you are welcome and you should get no grief from anyone - its your life (....and in keeping with the consistent theme of making a statement and then contradicting it immediately that everyone seems to do) if you jump you had better stay girlfriend.

Please ....save your applause.

Moo

Sounds more to me like the prodigal son returning than the Judas like betrayal some are portraying. I have already made my feelings known about Freo people who support WC. .Even though she has a WP background her family are obviously enlightened people It warms my heart to know that Sera has seen the light and I only hope that many more will follow in her footsteps.

It will be a well worn path.

I cannot understand how anyone can change their allegiance from one team to another. I think a team is for life. I would never jump off either the Mighty Royals ( I have been a member longer than many on this board have been on the planet) and an Eagle since the first game against Richmond at Subi in 1987.

I didn't ever follow a Victorian team in the VFL - East Perth was enough for me - so when the Eagles arrived I had no mixed feelings about following them with a passion. I am a paid up member of both my teams and love them both equally. It is possible to follow a team in both leagues, just takes a bit of juggling and swapping scarves in the car while travelling from one game to the next :)

supporters come in all shapes and sizes. there are the die hards who support their team through the years and through the highs and lows. there are also supporters who support individual players. there are also those who just support AFL. not everyone is the die hard variety although most people like to claim that they are.

personally i don't see the big issue here. obviously sera feels a desire to support another team. more power to her.

p.s. hope you like loosing on derby day ;)

LOL Thats the first in my 40 Something I have ever been described as "Verbose".

I had to look up the thesaurus to see what it meant.

You have misquoted me. here is what I said "As you get older and understand women a bit "

Which is a far cry from "understands the mind of woman."

Do you want that bridge two lanes or four?

Please, take all our bandwagoners. The dockers are slowly becoming the AFL's answer to Chelsea, a nice fashion accessory (although I wouldn't normally associate purple with fashion). Nevertheless, that can only be good for Eagle's supporters.

What is it with all the references to soccer? Honestly, try defining yourselves without the aid of mother Pomgolia. I am baffled that anyone would think that reference to some Pomgolian soccer team is going to clear things up for me. I could care less but it would be hard. Soccer schmoccer.

"It's like the Footly-Tootlers, if you love them, you love them forever. You're always Footly-Tootling if you're a Footly-Tootler."

"WCE are rapidly becoming the Slovaki Frenulums of the AFL..."

"I have followed the Michigan Pie-Eaters ever since the Australian wunderkiddy, Emma Chissett, went over there to eat as a pro. When she left for the Idaho Snackgobblers, I stuck true to the Pie-Eaters because I am a flaming idiot only a mother could love."
