Channel 7 are once again cutting the AFL short on Sunday, with a 3 o'clock start to the Swans broadcast. Grrrrrrr.

I got that email address from two other websites that said that was the only general contact for Australia's channel 7. I just did a few google searches and found that this address goes to channel 7 in Islamabad! The poor guys!

I'll call channel 7 (in pyrmont) on Monday and get the correct address.

People quickly forget that Channel 7 and 10 are locked into a contract that was agreed upon by the AFL and Channel 9. So any anger should be directed at Channel 9. People forget who made this deal and how it worked. This TV deal was made to suit Channel 9's Rugby League TV coverage and when Channel 7/10 matched the bid with then nothing could be done to change the contract to stop conflicts which 7 have with the V8's and have seen the V8's move race starts to suit the networks AFL coverage.

As for when Channel 7 show their games, well they aren't going to show the AFL Live over a higher rating show in BH&G regardless how much people complain. They are a company that has to make money and to do that they have to rate and they aren't going to replace a higher rating show with a lower rating show, that is pure madness. As for Sunday's and why its at 3pm, well 7 CAN'T show games played in Melbourne LIVE into Melbourne unless its a Sell Out and they also want to use the AFL match as a lead in boost for the ratings of the 6pm News. As the AFL coverage DOESN'T rate well in Sydney (even if the Swans are playing), 7 have that 30 minute program before the news as their lead in boost.

There are reasons for everything and most of them relate back to two things.

1) The contract agreed upon by the AFL and Channel 9 and
2) Ratings

Sooner people understand that ratings play a major role in the money that comes into the League for the TV rights, then they will understand why this happens. Also Sydneysiders complaining about not getting a game Live, big deal, all Swans fans elsewhere would love half the FTA coverage that you get of the club.

A network making a commitment to live sport is entirely different to scheduling for ratings.

Dayparts are a huge factor in ratings. Prime time is obviously the priority, the sunday afternoon schedule is not where channel 7 earns it's ratings.

We're not complaining about a half hour delay; a half hour delay is standard. The issue is a 1 hour delay and edited down content.

If you're happy with this, that's fantastic, I am not.

Which in this case has Channel 7 committed to 2 sporting events from Midday to 6pm. 12pm-3pm is the V8's which goes live because that is LIVE from 12pm - 3pm and you can tape delay something that hasn't already happened, but they can tape delay an event that starts a 2pm and starts on TV at 3pm. They aren't going to cut into the V8's in Sydney for a Swans match to be shown LIVE hence the 3pm start time. Which is the same start time as everyone else.

So lead ins to Prime Time (such as Rugby League on Channel 9 in the Northern States and AFL on Channel 7 in the Southern States) aren't used to boost the respective News ratings on a Sunday Night? They are important and are built into Sporting codes TV contracts. Why do you thing they have a 30 minute program between the AFL and the 6pm News? Because it is the better lead in. If it wasn't they would show the AFL in full.

1 hour delay is what Melbourne viewers get weekly and unless there is a Sell Out there is no chance of a game going LIVE into Melbourne. Edited Down Content, fair enough but again its not like its the end of the world or something new that Sydney-siders are getting forced upon them. This was how Channel 9 did the Second Sunday game when they had the rights into the Southern States as a lead in to the news. As I stated the reason it is being edited down is because they want more people watching the program before the 6pm News than they KNOW they would get watching the AFL

In my families case, paying to get Foxtel so we can watch the club we love Live each week. Yes if I had been promised every Swans game on FTA I would be pissed off too if one or two were delayed, but South supporters had that promise years ago and it was broken years ago. So I say think about what you do have and then think about losing it. Because trust me its not great.

I'm annoyed at the edited content too. I'm too selfish to care about understanding what they do other than editing a swans game. I lived for years with Channel 7 and their 11pm and later edited replays of Swans games in Brisbane and now I have Fox usually it's not a problem but either I watch the Swans edited version at 3 or wait until much later to watch the game on fox presumably unedited. Unfortunately I'm not patient enough and would hate to accidently find out the result. Channel 7

Hopefully they cut a lot of other crap out and show most of the game.

I'm just saying that they are the two channels that cover AFL and neither is showing it. I'm not suggesting Channel 10 could have shown it, just expressing annoyance that there is garbage on both channels right now (apologies to motorsport fans!)
