With Chaplin being excluded from the leadership group, I think it opens the door for an Elton/Astbury type to be given the opportunity to replace him.

All the talk here, by people who weren't happy with his performance, was that he was staying in the side due to being in the leadership group.

Well thats no longer an issue, so maybe there may be some movement there.

I still think he has something to offer in terms helping develop the younger defenders, but i think it will be good if we are not relying on him to be a staple back there.

if that was the case Morris would have played every week also

We never drop older players, I cant think of any who were phased out in recent times. I believe Astbury will game time though this year, prob at Batchs expense

True, we tend to try and play them til they retire, irregardless of form. I think Dimma just really likes to have players he knows he can rely on to follow the gameplan - it's why once the season has started we almost never see big unforced switches to the best 22. He doesn't like unknown quantities.

Chaplin is nearing the end. But in 2015 he did often turn up at the important place at the important time and helped us save a goal. His experience and leadership is what keeps him in. If Astbury/Elton can get in and do the KPD job + help out then Chaplin's days are numbered. I reckon he really looked like he was slowing down even more by end 2015. The issue was his replacement didn't exist. A fit Astbury should fill that CHB role. And Elton has the ability so should get a go. We'll see. But Chaplin is nearing the end, hopefuly by beign replaced by a better player.

makes me cry every time

His role, despite his size is really as the floating 3rd tall, but IMO your floating 3rd tall needs to be quick, agile and have very good foot skills or dont bother, find a smaller player who can play tall Batch.

We cant afford to have Rance, Astbury, Grimes, Batch and Chaplin in 1 backline - sadly Chaplin is the best 3rd tall of the lot (Rance excluded) but is forced and rightfully so, to play as a true KPD more often than not.

Our back line IMO should be,

Grimes Astbury/Chap Batch

Yazz

Vlas Rance Houli

Chaplin has been pretty good since coming across from Port Adelaide.
There is no one to replace him.
There's a lot of love for Astbury on this board but I don't rate him.
Elton may be okay but he's not ready to play key position in a team trying to finish in the 4.
Chaplin easily best 22 and anyone who doesn't think so is delusional.

I was so close to that action, I nearly did kill him verbally..............
Still haunts me

And it needn't have happened. Batch was on his own 35m away on the Sthn Stand back flank. He saw him, went to go then changed his mind in a complete brain fade. Even then try to get a foot to it ffs.

That EF performance should alone see him never pull on the jumper again. He's an experienced player and there's no way he should be putting in a performance like that.

I'd rather give his position to Astbury or Elton and he and Batch can fight over that third spot. He sucks 1:1 wants to be that third man, unaccountable, float in front of the contest type. Even his attempts at spoiling were pathetic. He can't be trusted.

Has been heralded in the past as a true leader and organiser for our backs. From a spectators point of view though of his on field efforts in the second half of 2015 perhaps he would be better suited in row 1 behind the goals.

If this guy is B22 based on his use of the footy though we are in a fair bit of trouble.

If the club won't move him on then he needs to do it for them :thumbsu:

He should never have been on our list as we weren't ready for a prized recruit at that time of the rebuild. He was never that and Flair Fartley got it all wrong
I hope he gets delisted at seasons end bc his contract is up and we can put our money into some real use
