Jack didnt have a big impact. To be fair though, no forward would have played well witj the delivery he got today and us bombing it to no one. Jacks poor game was more the result of Ports overall dominance rather than a one man beating.

I don't understand why Richmond play Chaplin- they have two very promising key defenders in Rance and Astbury, anyone can see that. What's the point of playing a 28yo 195cm loose man who wilts at the first sign of physical pressure? He was a cancer at our club with all his pointing and blaming and he's no different at Richmond.

Astbury had been injured, only played a half of VFL recently, way too underdone for a final. Next year my 3 talls would be Rance, Astbury and Grimes/Chaplin vying for third. He will find himself in the VFL if he doesnt perform.

Already have brother :thumbsu: Said some of his efforts disappointed me as he is meant to be a leader. I don't think he lead by example today. Did some dumb things but the one where he went to ground really left a sour taste in my mouth (and it wasn't from partycorolla's mate :)). Thought Chaps should have done better and I wanted to see what others thought. Some agree, some don't & some just think everyone was shit. It's the way she goes. Not sure how this thread could be baiting though. Couple of cheeky Port fans have come in but you expect that after the talk during the week. The way she goes I guess:straining:

Yeah, Carlile was hugely promising circa 2009-10 (had one memorable game where he took Lloyd to the cleaners and ran off him to kick one himself) before falling in a hole with about 35 other blokes during the Primus years.

Has been commanding under Hinkley though and looks to have fulfilled his promise - and the faith of the club who put him on a 4-year deal. Can sometimes be outgunned 1-on-1 against bigger blokes like Petrie and Cloke (is only 192cms), but reads the play really well and can handsomely blanket a commensurate-sized opponent with decent enough cover from his partner in crime Trengove and the third-ups in Hombsch and Jonas.

Solidly reliable.
 
Chaplin did lay a big hit on Daniel Rich once in 2009, and looked sorry about it. Has been Jane ever since, had an alright first half of 2012 before the wheels fell off for the whole team that season.

The closest he has come to being physical since was giving Jay Schulz a whack behind the play last year. No matter what you think of Schulz, after everything he went through in 2012, and giving absolutely everything he could for the club during it's darkest days, for Chaplin to walk out on the club in the manner he did, then give of all players, Schulz, a clip behind play, shows his true character.
 
Think we can now safely say that 2013 was an unusually good year for him.

spot on, I reckon my mouth was hanging open at how slow and casually he was running to that ball - should be ashamed at that effort.
 
I really struggle to place Troy Chaplin in the Richmond line up TBH

He is 195/6cm 100 kgs but plays the 3rd tall / loose defender role which is strange, A player his height needs to be able to play the gorilla's 1 on 1 but i cant really remember him being played that way at richmond or shutting down a monster foward from memmory

He is 'trying' to play the Joel Bowden role for us but is not really that good at it and my personal view is that the loosse defender role needs to be played by a player that has significant speed, is an accurate kick, Reads the play extremely well, composed in traffic and under pressure and more 190/192cm height

With Astbury,Rance,Grimes,Elton (if he comes on as expected) I really struggle to see Troy Chaplin having any benefit to oue club in the future

Chaplin is not a leader and certainly not a player who will stand up in finals type pressure. He likes to talk and point his finger around but he does not lead by example with his lethargic chases, never sticking tackles or impacting a contest. He also makes terrible decisions with the pill. The Port supporters are bang on with he acts like Tarzan plays like Jane.

May be handy as cover but should be playing the majority of next year in the VFL until his contract is up

He is a key backman. No 2 behind Rance.
If anyone is "trying" to play Bowdens role it would be Houli. A run and carry type of player.

It wasnt that he fell over, its the moments before he fell over that had me ****ed thinking wtf is going on here....clearly in the van to get to the ball first if he put his head down and put in the big strides to get the pill, but for some reason only wanted to keep his direct opponent in contact. Baffling to say the least.

Would have been tough for him to face the crowd and yes he didn't have a great game but not many did.

Really think our midfield let our defenders down yesterday. Port steamrolled us and kept the pressure up until the game was effectively over. Said it last year too but we really need to work out how to make more of our players run hard both ways - Port had so many players flooding forward and back that it caused overlaps and resulted in goals and turnovers. We need to match that kind of fitness IMO.

You might want to try and watch a game of football once in a while. When in possession of the ball, players take off and go into space rather than staying on their direct opponents..... even lock down defenders :) This would happen around 30-40 times a game inside and around defensive 50 and plenty of times up further the ground..... Just watch a game, any game, you'll find it!
