We need to win next years flag. To do this we need players who save their best for the big games not their worst for the big games. Chapman is a big game player. He has intimidated Hawthorn for years. He would intimidate Geelong & Hawthorn & Port Adelaide next season and has inflicted pain on nearly every team in the league.

He plays well at Subiaco/Paterson's and brings hardness that others may not bring to the Big Dance.

His impact would last long after he retires and would be able to impart some knowledge on every player in the squad.

Chapman would cost very little. If he plays 12 games it would be money well spent. We need real hard heads. There will be crucial games against Hawthorn & Geelong next season and we need Chapman IMHO.

Not sure if we need to recruit Chapman just to beat Hawthorn as you suggest.

On top of what Lach said I feel like if we were to recruit him (or even Ellis for that matter) someone like Neale or Crozier would probably miss out and I'd rather get games into them. Yeah yeah I know not ruthless enough or playing favourites maybe but what we'd gain in the short term isn't worth it for me.

If he's as valuable as you claim then Geelong will hold onto him, it's not like they aren't gunning for a flag either.

Silvia and Chapman play the same role

If Sylvia dominates in big games fine. We'll have to wait and see. Chapman does play well in big games everyone knows that.

Our problem wasn't lack of talent or lack of system it was lack of composure. I hope Sylvia is a great pick-up but he has under-performed for his entire career really.

Not using it as an all redeeming excuse or anything but compare the respective cultures and on-field success of Melbourne and Geelong for a moment and you may understand why he's both underperformed and not stamped himself on any big games.

Players make the culture. Chapman was a major part (perhaps the major part) of the Geelong culture.

Sylvia was also a major part of the Melbourne Football Club culture. I just read through his Wikipedia entry. There was quite a bit there that I'd forgotten about/never took much notice of.

This was never intended to be a thread about the merits of Chapman V Sylvia. We'll let the historians struggle over that battle.

We already have Sylvia. I'm saying Chapman would be a welcome addition. He's going to play for someone next season it may as well be us.

It would be a waste. We all know Ross Lyon doesn't play experienced players from other clubs, he prefers to develop the young talent.

(if we say this often enough it will become BF myth) ;)

He didn't make the difference, Geelong still lost? Unless you mean the difference between a blow out and a close game in which case there's no gap for us to bridge there anyway with Hawthorn.

He played a good game though.

It's hard to make much of an impact when you're sitting in the Grand Stand.

Chapman didn't play in the Preliminary Final against Hawthorn he was suspended. He played against Hawthorn in the previous ten Geelong V Hawthorn encounters, the one's where Geelong won each and every one.

Chapman was the one who said Hawthorn would never beat Geelong again as long as he was playing.
That's a statement that means something when it turns out to come true.

The game I'm talking about was Paul Chapman's last AFL game where he was best on ground against Port Adelaide in a cut throat elimination final and was the difference.

I can see Ross' opening interview now;.. "Chappy get rid of that arse and then we'll look at playing you" .

Paul Chapman is a very respectful guy so he wouldn't turn up to the interview wearing his three Premiership medals and his Norm Smith. Colin Sylvia on the other hand could turn up for his interview with his 2005 Rising Star Nomination certificate (after being drafted #3 in 2003).

That's very quick Cam.

The show doesn't go on forever though and Colin looks capable of giving similar value, but for three years.
Room for one of them not both IMV.

May be an inappropriate comment but...

How do you reckon he'll get on playing with Ballantyne?! The Cats supporters would all have a cow to see Chappy in Dockers' colors.

I'm only interested in winning next years flag. That was Hawthorn's attitude when they drafted Stuart Dew and the Brian Lake. They have two Premiership Cups as a result. They wouldn't have won either without those two players.

Then Chapman's spot can be taken by someone else after that. Chapman's finale will go something like "Now this is how you do it on the big stage". Our biggest issue in the GF was stage fright. That's what leaders are for, to show composure when the pressure is on.

We had two players who played well last week but Mundy really lead (as opposed to Crowley who just did his job exceptionally well).

That's a no from me, it is an area we are stacked in and he missed half a season with injury yet again. Pods is the same age and gives us depth in an area we are shaky in and would probably come cheaper.
