Just wondering what people's thoughts are, or if they know of anything with regards to Gardiner staying at Geelong in 2008. Both Gardiner and Playfair had above average performances in the VFL finals series, and while they haven't really been able to cut it at AFL level in a big way it wouldn't be outlandish to say they have the potential to be in the starting 22 of some AFL teams (depending on their structure etc). Obviously with 9 All-Australians, a VFL premiership and fingers crossed an AFL premiership on Saturday, Geelong will be faced with not only salary cap issues but the issue of predominantly VFL players seeking AFL games elsewhere. Are the Gardiner's and Playfair's of Geelong the type who can make it elsewhere and leave in a trade or will Geelong seek to keep them?

Hopefully we can trade them. I say hopefully because otherwise they will definitely be delisted, there really isn't room for them with some of the frowards we have coming through. Both good VFL players. I would not be surprised if someone took a punt on Playfair, a team desperate for KPP, we should take anything we are offered for them.

I'll go so far as to say that Gardiner deserved a spot in the 1s more than Hawkins did in the latter half of the season.

But neither was good enough.

So, good luck to Charlie because he has a big heart and will do well at another club.

With Hank though he may have saved himself with dominant displays across half back in the last month or so. I think he has some value, especially for teams without a KPP at CHB.

I think in the Prelim he took 10 marks alone in the third quarter, virtually being his own backline and stopped every incursion by the team they were playing.

Gardiner also has some value, wouldn't be too surprised if he got picked up in either a trade or via the draft.

Both players have trade value. Sydney especially may be interested in H given his background. We'll probably trade/delist them due to the necessity to turn over players and to free up some salary cap.

neither are up to AFL standard.

I'd be disappointed if either of them were retained. They have had more then ample opportunity to make the 1st team but neither have been able to do it.

I hope they'd have trade value but I doubt it would be much.

Trade both. Both have been given great opportunities but have failed to step up and they are at the stage of their careers where they'd be wanting to be cementing their position in 1s so adios amigos.

I reckon Adelaide will want Gardiner - they have no forward line

Hentschel will be making comeback from knee reco, Ricciuoto is gone, everybody else except for Welsh is ordinary...

i think its a safe bet that at least one of them won't be at geelong next year.

its going to be a tough choice when we get round to delisting some players.

I really think if Charlie (or Codfish as I call him - note usual facial expression when looking around deciding where to kick) got traded to a club where he got some serious time on the field and experience at AFL level - he could turn into a very good player. Good luck to him. I wish him all the best.

Thanks for responses. The only issue i feel here is where the cats forward line is going to go. Don't get me wrong both have had their chances to prove themselves and havent done so. However they have had rare glimpses of good form (Playfair '05, Gardiner '04 Prelim Final etc) which begs the question of Geelong's second string forward line. N Ablett isnt exactly a star attraction down there and would most likely make room for Hawko when he grows into a key position role. Therefore what do we do in the meantime (obviously next season etc). Obviously we have small forwards a plenty but who do we turn too in times of injuries when requiring a tall forward. I feel Playfair and Gardiner, with experience could hold down these roles, if not permanently then when required.

are your serious or taking the piss??

charlie is a good vfl player, just not up to afl intensity.

I've been critical of both, but in recent times H has shown some great form as a defender. If the club do hold on to him as a backup and he does break into the AFL side next season he must be played as a defender, he clearly does not cut it as a key position forward.

As for Charlie great VFL player but never really showed enough at AFL level. If we can't trade him, I'd assume he'd be delisted and probably picked up by another team.
