According to a source on facebook, David Porter and the rest of the Cheer Squad have been told their services are no longer required. Does anyone know anything about this - I would be astounded and shocked to hear that it is true:eek:

So does this mean that you are going to go and make the banner each week after work, and are you going to spend money going to every interstate and away game to cheer the team on? Our cheer squad are a very dedicated bunch of people, many that have been there for 37 years. A little respect please.:(

my interaction with the cheer squad is
a) the red head guy that rages at the team and people
b) being abused while working at etihad by some of the cheer squad people over me checking their tickets.

I was in the cheer squad a few years ago now, and while there are some people who are a bit arrogant and not very friendly, they were the minority. I went along to an interstate game in 2005 to Adelaide, where there was probably only 20 bulldog supporters in total, without them there would have been no one to cheer on the team. If you compare our banners against the competitions, our are fantastic, there is a lot of thought and work put in behind the scenes. Once they are gone, you will notice.

Agree Dogs_r_barking. Despite what some think all cheer squad members from all clubs are very dedicated and putting in a lot more hours into the club during the week (ie: banner preparation etc) than us regular members. Kudos to them.

Wow! They make a banner! How would we survive without the cheer squad?

What else do they do besides the banner and horrible chants?

I feel that my money and attendance is more important to the club than my banner crafting abilities. Seems to be a bunch of people trying to feel important.

Every cheer squad should be killed.

But wouldn't you acknowledge arkie that cheer squads are a tradition to our game.

Just got an Email From the club in regards to the Cheer Squad...

Dear Blake,
I am writing to let you know that in 2014 there will be some exciting changes to the Western Bulldogs Cheer Squad to help us achieve our vision to become the loudest and most supportive Cheer Squad in this league. And it starts with you.

Your support can’t be under-estimated. The Bulldogs chant that rose around Etihad Stadium at half time during our final 2013 match against Melbourne, was spine tingling. THIS should be something that is the hallmark of our games in the future. And it will be with your passion and support.

With this in mind the Club recently undertook a review of how we can support our Members to create the most spirited Cheer Squad in the competition.
This review, which included feedback collected directly from Cheer Squad members, identified the following challenges:
  • The number of Cheer Squad members has been in continual decline over the last three years
  • Our Cheer Squad bay was often only half-full at most of our games in 2013
  • Our most passionate supporters want a family friendly Cheer Squad environment that actively encourages their enthusiasm
As a result of these findings, we are changing the structure of the Cheer Squad and the way the group works with the Club.

We believe these changes, which have the full support of the Western Bulldogs Board, will provide greater benefits to you as a Cheer Squad member and also make the Cheer Squad area the most exciting place to watch the Bulldogs.

The Cheer Squad committee will be replaced with a new Cheer Squad leadership team comprising of four Cheer Squad members, covering four key roles – match day activities and ticketing, banner making, communications and finances.

All four members will work closely with our dedicated supporter group relationships coordinator here at Whitten Oval.

More information on these roles and the application process to apply for a position will follow shortly.

There will of course continue to be opportunities to be involved in numerous other activities beyond these formal roles and we will work closely with you to make sure that you can continue to be involved in the way that you most enjoy.

I’m also pleased to announce that, for the first time, the Cheer Squad will have an ambassador within the Western Bulldogs playing group. Jordan Roughead will take this position and, as a life-long Bulldog supporter, will be a great asset to the group. During the year, we will also be supporting the Cheer Squad with social functions, a new item of uniform for every member and discounted interstate tickets.

I want to personally thank the members of the Cheer Squad committee that have provided their time for the benefit of the Club and Cheer Squad members.

I would especially like to acknowledge Co-presidents Gary Munn and David Porter and vice-President Lorraine Liistro for over twenty years of dedicated service to the Cheer Squad.
The Club would like to place on record our thanks and gratitude to Gary, David and Lorraine for their hard work, passion and commitment and hope they will continue to be members of the Cheer Squad.

With your support our Cheer Squad will be a supporter group for the most fanatical of Bulldogs supporters – a fun, exciting and engaging place where people come together with a shared passion.

The Club needs you to continue to play your part in energising the boys to play their best and I look forward to seeing you bold, loud, and proud at the football next season doing just that.

Go Dogs

Always a touchy subject I think, when you have volunteers doing something over a long period of time and then wish to initiate some change. Cannot question anyone in the cheer squad's loyalty, or dedication as fans of the Club but just on what I have observed from afar and online re: this scenario, I get th sense they Club has made a call to get either a paid position in charge, or spilled things in response to a perceived need to regenerate the group.

I don't like the idea of a cheer squad, so much as the fact that every fan should go to games wearing their colours, prepared to cheer and overtly express their passion for the Club though various forms. Make some flags, hang up some banners, decorate the area of the ground you occupy with the symbols of our Club. Cheer. High five the bloke next to you, encourage kids to barrack.

Perhaps a new group of people who are motivated will occupy the area behind the goals and lead the way for the rest of the fans in creating a vibrant and active display of passion.

Don't get the lack of love for the cheer squad. I am grateful for their efforts and passion. Sure the rest of the crowd could be more vocal etc but doesn't mean we should get rid of the cheer squad.

I am purely an outsider, and have never had any connection with them, but even from my perspective I can note that:
(1) they put in many hours each week OF THEIR OWN TIME to prepare the banners, etc, and the caricatures, etc are usually quite good.
(2) they ALWAYS offer a presence at interstate games where most of us do not,
(3) they are our fellow supporters putting in an effort, and should be acknowledged as such.

Nice work, bagging people for effort.

I don't see anyone from the cheer squad on here bragging about their importance, in fact you seem to be the only one spouting your own importance.

Absolutely, re-reading my post I probably gave that impression. I think the Cheer Squad has a role to play and is a nice tradition and social aspect of the Club. Full credit to them. Its just not for me, for the reasons I stated, the sort of fanatical behaviour you expect behind the goals should be the norm everywhere.

Most of the commentary has been how it's a disgrace that some of these cheer squad members have been stood down from their roles after so many years of service. I was merely pointing out the fact that they have no real responsibilities. Cheer squads probably only exist for historical purposes.

Maybe you can elaborate on what they do besides banners and caricatures.

Ummm....... cheer?

I think it's a poor effort really. I hate to sound like I'm trolling but a club like the Doggies surely can't try blaming poor numbers on the guys in the cheer squad?
If the board wasn't happy with them.. Maybe they could have brought it up sooner?

Cheer-squad numbers declining 40% in 3 years, you'd be mad not to do something about it.
I welcome the revamp, these people aren't going to suddenly stop going to the footy and I'm all for measures being taken to increase the size of the squad, hopefully we'll see bigger crowds next year. It's disappointing as someone who's (probably out of pure coincidence) attended Bulldogs games more than ever in 2011-12-13 that people drop off when the going gets tough. Time to make Etihad a real cauldron and part of that is increasing the source of all the noise.

A PAIR of Western Bulldogs tragics who have been the heart and soul of the club for almost 90 years combined have been dumped from the cheer squad for not putting enough bums on seats.
Doggies cheer squad co-presidents David Porter and Gary Munn say they were given their marching orders by chief David Garlick on Wednesday despite both being life members of the AFL club.
The Bulldogs on Thursday went into damage control, writing to members about an "exciting'' restructure aimed at making the cheer squad "the loudest and most supportive'' in the league.
But Mr Munn, a cheer squad member of 50 years, and Mr Porter, a member for 37 years, said they been shown the door because the club wanted to take control of its fan base.
Mr Porter said they were being punished for the Bulldogs' struggles on-field.
"We've been blamed for people not going to the football when we were the ones there supporting the team when there was only four people in the cheer squad,'' he said.
"I'm gutted because the football and the cheer squad has been part of my life."
Mr Munn, whose mum Margaret started the cheer squad, said he had been told he was "no longer required'' despite years of service. "I won't be going to games any more,'' he said. "It just wouldn't feel right. It's the way that they have done it that hurts.''
Griffen to captain the Bulldogs
The letter to Bulldogs members said the club had conducted a review and found cheer squad membership had been in "continual decline'' for three years and its cheer squad bay was "half-full'' for most matches this year.
The Bulldogs board has backed the restructure which will see the club appoint its own cheer squad leadership to oversee match day action, banner making, ticketing, communications and finances.
Mr Garlick said the club had identified "a range of issues'' with cheer squad leadership and wanted to get more families and young supporters involved.
Nominations for a new cheer squad leadership group will be taken by the club.
