Has anybody ever heard of a Chinese hat trick? I am pretty sure I remember hearing a commentator use this phrase during the one day game between Australia and England at Leeds in 1981. During Australia's innings Graham Yallop was run out by Robin Jackman when the ball ricocheted off Jackman's hand as he stuck it out in his follow-through and the ball hit the wicket with Yallop out of his ground at the non striker's end. The next ball saw Kim Hughes dismissed caught by Mike Gatting off Jackman's bowling. This meant that Jackman had been responsible for dismissing both batsmen but would obviously not receive a wicket for the Yallop run out. If he could be involved in the dismissal of the next batsman with his next delivery, he would have taken a Chinese hat trick.

I have not been able to find this game on You Tube to hear the commentary again and have found no mention of a Chinese hat trick in any cricket dictionaries or on the internet. I have asked the volunteers at the SCG cricket library when I visited there last year but they have not heard this term either. But surely I can't be the only Big Footy cricket follower to have heard this term.

Cricket's not played in China.

Cricket's not played in China.
Tell that to left arm wrist spinners.

Can't say it's played a lot in France either. Doesn't stop us from having a French cut.

Yeah never heard of it but there would have to be a term to describe such a form of hatrick. You are probably right cos they have a name for everything.

Well, after a month without anyone confirming my definition of a Chinese hat trick, perhaps I am the only Big Footy cricket follower (from 95,000 members) to have heard this term. Surprises me, but I know I've heard the term before.

I think you can narrow it down to about 420 odd who have read your thread. There may be someone out there yet.
