So I have been seeing a chiro for a few weeks to try and fix a pain in my back I get after walking for a while. I also have an issue with my groin which I believe is related and has kept me out of sport. A few people I've spoken to have said they are quacks and to see a physio but I have been to them for previous injuries and found they often don't address the problem.

While it is too early too notice a significant difference it would be good to hear people's experiences with them.

I've been to a chiro for my back. In my experience, they can help a bit with the symptoms, but try to rip you off by scheduling a 'course' or many repeat visits. Once they start spouting about how chiro can cure everything (gastrointestinal illnesses etc.) run; its a load of s*&t.

I now go to an osteopath when I have back/neck/shoulder issues and they do a much better job IMHO. My back generally gets locked/knotted up about once every year or two, and 1-2 trips to the osteo fix it up for an extended period of time.

I've been going to the chiro casually when needed for the last 8 or so years. I go for a quick solution to a sore neck/back and with a quick walk after it, I don't need to go for months. In fact I've only been once in the last year, when I got out of bed the wrong way. If after a few sessions in a row it doesn't help you, then definitely stop going. The way I see it, it's a treatment that varies person-to-person rather than an overall fix for everyone.

I've got a semi deteriorating back though, and I dont want to go to a chiro, where do i go and how much will it hurt?

the pain is in a very specific area right in the bend of my spine and only hurts when I move on back in certain ways (sideways basically)

it feels like it needs to be cracked back in to place or something

As I may have said in this thread, just don't allow them to set you up for never ending "treatment". If they are legit (ho ho) they will be able to give a time frame for improvement. A number of people will have positive experience, but understand there is no scientific basis for what they do.
That goes for any specialist, you should never need ongoing treatment for any condition, maybe a check up once a year for some conditions but not ongoing treatment.

Its all about consistent treatment don't go for 2 months and expect to be better

By the same token, if you are still going after two years, you are wasting your time and money.

If you've been seeing a chiro for a few weeks and not noticed any improvement perhaps you should try something else.

Like any profession there are good and bad chiros. The one I go to is very good. I get a decent improvement within 2 or 3 visits. A different woman at the same practice makes my back worse. A handy rule of thumb with doctors is if it is hard to get an appointment with them they are probably good at what they do.

I'm glad there's a thread on this.
My ex-wife, who I get along very well with, has been going to the chiros since mid-2006, and just about every fortnight since, at $50 a pop.

Her issue is neck-related where the problem causes her to have migraines that sometimes literally make her vomit, they're that bad.
I have been telling her that after God-knows how many treatments after 6 years she should be seeing some improvements. But she's both stubborn and has some form of social anxiety whereby doing different things would freak her out. It pains me to see her waste valuable time (and money) at these chiros, My suggestion years ago to see a specialist was met with, "Yeah, Ok, maybe....". Now that I am no longer around her she's sticking to this routine.

Thanks I couldn't find a thread when I searched.

Cheers to everyone with their advice. Sounds like an osteo is worth a try. I had never even heard of them before.

some people swear by them, and im not about to judge a person's individual experience. but chiropractic is based on complete woo and should be the last option taken (if at all).
