Chocco Williams to take over in '08

He's done OK Williams, but walked into a pretty good list.

Malthouse has some clear weaknesses (in particular list managment), but he coached a far less talented team to beat Williams' more talented line up twice when it matters.

Malthouse is the better coach. He should just be kept away from recruiting decisions.

It isn’t bad luck that we didn’t get Williams just that we kept Malthouse.
It is time for a new coach not a recycled one.

That would be the single most important part of any football club in such a heavily regulated player market. It is by no means the extent of his weaknesses though. Whether he is better than Williams or not is difficult to say. Williams may have had a better list courtesy of startup assistance but MM has had plenty early draft picks (has anyone had more?) and Williams did trade well. Williams won a flag at Port and Malthouse didn’t at Collingwood. I know Malthouse won 2 flags at WCE but that was last century and with fantastic list assistance. MM isn’t the worst coach in the AFL by stretch but he has failed at Collingwood.

Worsfold and Roos didnt have to prove themselves.
They did have to serve an apprenticeship though. Even Mathews served a brief apprenticeship and had a year in the media before that. Personally I'd prefer Buckley to have a break in the media and then do a stint at another club before taking over as coach of Collingwood if that's what he wants, he proves capable and the incumbent isn’t winning premierships.

I was strangely amused when there was so much interest in Choco coming from Collingwood fans. I would have though Malthouse is at a minimum the equivalent of Choco in terms of results. What exactly has he done wrong? Took a ‘run of the mill’ side to back to back GF’s and has shown massive improvement this year ….

In terms of Choco/MM comparisons, I would say MM is better tactically on match day, he is also a master of the mind games.

Choco it seems is very good at mentoring youngsters, motivation and list management.

It all depends on what stage your club is at and what you need ...

Five minutes apprenticeship, especially Roos. If anybody is likely to be ready to go straight into coaching, its Buckley.
Perhaps. Mathews said the same of Shaw and it has been said of many failed coaches in the past. There are lots of skills needed and one of them isn’t playing ability. Buckley is a student of the game and that would help I would think but until they actually do it you can never tell. The one query I would have over Buckley would be how he would handle talented players that don’t have his drive or his discipline. Frustrating as they may be they are everywhere and they win premierships.

it will be the shaw thing all over again if that happened.that put us back 5 years that did.but i suppose buckley would not get sucked in to recycled useless hacks and he would have a decent recruiting staff which would not pick the likes of tuckey, james, liddell, godden, warry, wild and jacotine

you never know what could happen by the end of 2007.... Footy is a funny business & contracts can be terminated....

Buckley has been studying coaching at some NFL clubs so he wouldn't be totally in the dark but still I'd prefer him to have a good aprenticeship, preferably at another club (AFL or lower leagues) or at least take a step back and look at things with a year or two in the media.
I would assume, and hope he'd do a year or two as an assistance, as you said either at another club, or at maybe VFL level, before being given the head job at Collingwood. Maybe even an assistant job down at Williamstown he can be given a chance there to see if that is what he truly wants and see if he has the ability to be one.

It may have helped Tony Shaw if he was given time to develop some skills before being made coach, but at the time I don't think we had many options.
