He was cracking a joke matey

He also said that the fans dont like him anymore he said that was a joke but it was also laced with a bit of truth.
I think both statements carried some weight he new how to express his feelings even if they got him into trouble.

He said he was stepping down due to ill health ... the supporters are sick and tired of him.

Joke. Geddit?

Agree with the observations FSC im finding that the dents williams has left in me outweighs the advantages i think it was the fact that he was not moved on sooner exacerbates the negatives. Im glad he is gone but i wish him and his family all the best.:thumbsu:

Interesting williams put a part of his resignation down to ill health i think even he knew that he overstayed and it is best for everyone to move on.

Oh dear :o

I dont post much but I read the Port boards most days on big footy.

To be honest I've been pretty disgusted with the tone of a large percentage of our supporter base for a long time for the ridiculous statements being made purely in the heat of the moment with no thought whatsoever.

Not to name names here but honestly, some of the comments made towards Choco over the last month or so, some of you as PAFC supporters, and human beings in general should be downright bloody ashamed of yourselves.

Dont get me wrong, I thought the time was right too, but it doesnt mean you've got to stoop to personal insults towards the bloke.

"dont just sack him, sue him" honestly, I still cant get over this one. I'm sure you've ridden the highs, and I'm sure you'll be the first to stick the knife into the next coach after their first loss. Thats the problem with being a supporter, you dont know what goes on behind closed doors.

Anyway thanks to the supporters that have offered carefully thought out balanced articles over the last few months, its balanced out the social decay that we've witnessed on this site. I'm no prude but far out, if I was choco and I read whats been written here......

Thanks Choc, for our flag, for doing your best, for loving the club, for being an icon and for wearing your heart on your sleeve. Your more Port Adelaide than anyone on this forum and you'll always be a legend in my book

You make a lot of valid points here mate, but there are some of us here who do know what goes on behind closed doors.
I don't believe i have ever posted any personal insult towards Williams but I will be the first to admit I don't like the bloke or his coaching methods and unashamedly so.
I don't want to sound condescending or that I'm bignoting myself but i have been involved in both football and business. They are remarkably similar in their machinations. Both need to develop talent and both need a succession plan, and on the other side of the ledger, both need to be ruthless and make tough calls and call time where it's necessary - move on people when their productivity falls below the required level. Port Adelaide under Mark Williams was devoid of all of these things.
I would love a lot of posters here to go onto the Geelong board, Collingwood board, or Hawthorn board and ask for a consensus on Gary Ablett snr, Peter Daicos or Michael Tuck. Ask those fans' thoughts about their great players and I'll guarantee the consensus will be identical across the board. " Great players in their day but their time had come " . This is the big problem at Port. No one is immortal.

Thanks for putting up a great and thoughtful post.

It puts it into real perspective, rather than the uniformed, vitriolic crap that some idiotic nuff nuffs have posted here recently.

The Board should have been given the arse before Williams, they are the root of this whole debacle

A lot has been said about our Board (another article in today's Sunday mail). Do we actually know which board members voted to keep Williams? I also know that a lot details discussed in Board meetings is confidential so I'm not sure if we'll ever find out who voted what??? What will be interesting is to see if these Board members get re-elected!
One positive you could take from this situation is learning from your mistakes and I don't think as a Board they make this mistake again.
I hope they take the next re-appointment for our new coach very sreoiusly and make the best decison for our proud club and don't get caught up in the situation from a personal point of view.

$20 for me if "PeacefulWarrior" is Jenny Williams?

Seems Choco being viewed through incredibly rose coloured glasses, blithely unaware that despite the brilliant contribution your family has made over the decades to our great Club, that perhaps the time had come...

Here's a hypothetical question:

Assuming we paid out Choco's contract in full, does that then mean he is unable to coach anywhere else next season?

I think usually it means that if he gets a coaching job paying more than we would've for next year, we don't pay for that year.

Not a lawyer, but everyone has an opinion and occasionally some relevant personal experience to draw on...

- non-compete clauses are mostly non-enforceable under Australian employment law, even if you sign them.

Choco is free to coach where he wants when he wants, unless he agreed not to as part of negotiating his payout, not that there was much time for that.

- contract payouts are based on a) the contract and b) negotiation. Argument about profits gained/lost are difficult and only come up if it went to court.

Choco walking would have been a breach, obviously terms are preferable to ending up in court. You could argue his timing minimizes the effect on the rest of the season, on players' development, on next year's potential, that walking out R1 or R22 would have been far more damaging than walking out mid season. That assumes finals are off the table (of course) and it requires the club to get its act together re interim coach and to appoint someone new %^&ing ASAP to get working on the preseason and nextseason NOW.

Yeah FSC & Boydman (the first offenders who spring to mind) have been unrelentingly, hysterically negative and irrational to the point of idiocy about him and "sue him" is definitely dumbest thread ever :o but it is also a bit %^&*ing early for the canonization advocates like PeacefulWarrior to be making their case for sainthood while the wounds are still so raw. Please wait until we're up and running well at, oh, about 5-2 next May under next coach with some visible on field differences then think real hard about your case when starting the first "riding on Choco's shoulders" thread.

Rucci indicated that Port paid out this season but not next season, Ricky Nixon said over the weekend that there was an agreed termination figure written into the contract.

BTW I heard on the radio this morning that Ricky had collapsed at home.

I'm also not a lawyer, but I am a law student so I do know a little bit about these situations.

I doubt we would've included a non-compete clause in the event of us sacking him. But IF we did, it would be enforceable. Non-compete clauses are only unenforceable if enforcing them would be effectively forcing the party to the contract to do a positive act (such as coaching Port) as opposed to simply forcing them not to do something. If it's not effectively forcing them to do anything (which it wouldn't be, as Choco won't be coaching Port no matter what happens with other clubs) then they can be enforced. That's my understanding anyway.

Mark ‘Choco’ Williams is on KG and the General today 3-5pm CST on AustraliaLiveTV.com. He’ll be giving his rundown on the World Cup Final and what he did on his first weekend off in 20 years or so!!

Choco jumped so I guess its all negotiable - what you're saying. OTOH if we sacked him that context might trigger other protections in our employment laws. It was put to me that a non compete clause that leaves you 'unable to use the tools of your trade (ie your skills) to earn a living', eg banning me working at competitors for 12 months, would be against our law. It's standard practice in other places with heavily IP based industries (California). I doubt our game plan is considered valuable IP by the PAFC just ATM  but some specific kinds of player data certainly would be.

Anyway, I'd rather see Choco turn up at GWS in nine months time than, say, at Essendon next month. Essendon as messed up as they currently are make them a very unattractive destination for any of our guys and I don't want to do anything to mess with that ;)

Duncanson of 5aa on Friday night... I'm suprised he didn't get out of his chair and biff Cornesy. The amount of times Cornesy made him repeat himself got a bit annoying... you can hear Duncanson getting agitated but he handled it pretty well.

I still think this mutual agreement crap is a bit of a farce... Choco was definitely pushed IMO
