Listen guys with only 6 weeks to go before finals time,we must address our forward structure.
Chris Dawes needs the baptism of fire,so this week against the Bombers is the perfect time for the kid to debut.
With no Rocca, rusling and Reid....drastic measures need to be taken.
It was proved against the Roos, that our lack of height and a strong marking target was sadly missed, especially as travis is copping all the heat.
Dawes has been playing regularly in the reserves and although not setting the world on fire, but neither has the VFL team.He has apparently gotten into the best a few times,so deserves a break. Also the delivery at reserves level is also bad so its not his fault.
What we have with this kid,is raw talent. He is young,as big as Rocca already, can smash packs and can take a good contested mark.He is also not a bad kick.Given some game time and experience he will surprise.
In fact outside Rocca he is our only real option,to take over the Rocca role.
Reid and Anthony and Rusling are leading forward types, and can only play that type of role.
Gee we sadly miss Clement because the likes of heath shaw, rhyce shaw, and benny johnson cannot contain smaller forwards. We have to address this backline problem too.
So come finals time it would be nice to have the follwing set up .
Travis Cloke- CHF
Chris Dawes-Forward pocket
J Anthony- As our lead up forward with grunt and who seems to be a be a dead eye dick when he kicks for goal.
This is a real and reasonable alternative to the missing rocca,Reid, and Rusling.
At their feet we can mix and match Medhurst,Didak,Davis,Thomas.
Fraser by the way is not the answer up forward.Big mistake if we rush him back this week so too with leon.Get these guys fully fit not half fit becuse they are likely to break down completely before finals. Also fraser cannot take a contested mark to save himself.
So heres how reality sits guys,we have Essendon,Stklida,Hawthorn. If we lose 2 out of these three we are out of the eight.
Then we have Port in Adelaide,Sydney, and Freo at Subiaco.
We travel twice before finals, only if we play finals.
Maybe if we lose the next couple of games may as well finish 10th and go for someone like kerr.We would have alittle more barganing power to get him if we finish outside the eight.
Otherwise take risks top 4 is still possible but we must win every game from here on in,otherwise we are only making up the numbers finnishing 5th-8th.
Thoughts are welcome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah pretty true mate. we cant afford to lose too many games from now on.
I'm not sure about dawes mate. But its worth giving him a go against essendon

Never got a problem with trying a kid.

Only 2 things can happen.

1 - You find out he can play

or

2 - You find out he can't play

Yeah thats true mate. Ah well, worth giving him a go

We lack a dominant midfield and a dominant key forward such as a J Brown or someone to the quality of him. If we are able to pick up a key midfielder we could be heading places :D

And a ruckman.we get smashed there every week and for years

Must play this week. He might actually surprise a few people. With good delivery he will provide a contest and might kick 2 or 3 which is all we want from him.

Let's hope it's the former eh?

Unleash the beast on the Bombers!

Go Pies!:thumbsu:

I would bring in Dawes and play him at full forward and move Anthony (although has been fantastic) to the backline to play on these small forwards you speak of. Anthony will be a player like Clement who can play on the talls and the smalls. Play Mcartney, lets give these kids a go! Whats the go with Barham? <---- some pace in our midfield would be nice...

Nah Barham wouldnt be ready yet, i would say he will get a run next year.

Actually Dogs good point Anthony could be the clement we have been waiting for.He is quick and strong and he has proved he can play forward.
He came to the pies as a backman didn't he ?
So madhouse should swing him into the backline if they give Dawes a shot up forward.
Barham and Macarthy were injured last time i heard, don't know if things have changed though.

Not really. 1 or 2 aren't really clear at all after one or two games.

See Mark McGough for a fake number 1. He was a star in his first few games, then he went to shit :(

See Harry O'Brien for a fake number 2.

Yeah, thats true, everyone thought McGough was gonna be a star after winning the anzac medal, what happened to him ? nothing, got traded to saints and never played another game

Another Mick Madhouse stuff up.
Mcgoof was a ball magnet, would get the ball 40 times in game its his kicking that let him down badly. In fact that was his demise.
Malthouse could've worked on his positives. He was a fantastic in and under middie got the ball all the time, shouldve worked on his handball skills a bit more like scotty west if you can't kick,Mcgoof just get it out to players who can.Could have been another greg williams type if the pies persevered.

Im not all that keen on Dawes coming in at this stage, and I don't think our forward line is what has been letting us down at all.
Our midfield was dominated Friday night, we had an open forward line perfect for the small blokes and a leading forward, yet the delivery was shit and we got no clean breaks after 1/2 time that was the problem and thats where our deficiencies lie.

In: Cousins, Kerr
Out: O'Bree, Johnson

:):):)

Wow, someone with sanity and a clue posted on this thread! :thumbsu:

I'm a little bit unsure on this idea. At the start of the year I wanted both J-mac and Dawes to debut as with Burns and Rocca ageing these guys need to be developed however now may not be the right time. Right now it is time for the Jack Attack. Lets give him a proper chance to settle in the forward line and let Dawes wait until next season where he will be able to settle in next to Cloke/Rocca/Reid/Rusling etc. Saying that if he came in I would be very excited to see him debut but not at the cost of Anthony who was the only one who could hold his head up after last Friday

Anthony has been doing a great job up forward, but he isn't going to take much pressure off Cloke. I'm all for giving Dawes a go (not at Anthony's expense), he can take a grab and kick straighter then most of our forwards.
The only problem i see right now with playing Cloke and Dawes is the fact Dawes is actually a very similar player to Cloke (from what i've seen). In the VFL Dawes has been playing that lead up CHF who takes plenty of grabs, but doesn't kick a heap of goals.

I understand that our midfield didn't help our cause on the weekend, the delivery to our forwards was poor, but Cloke is getting more and more attention each week, he's not always going to be able to cope, and when he doesn't our half forward line seems to fall down.

The only reason cloke doesnt kick a heap of goals is cuz he cant kick straight. Last year he kicked 39 goals, 39 behinds. Realistically he should have kicked well over 50 goasl last year but didnt. He finds the ball and takes marks but just cant finish off with a straight kick of the footy. Simple fact is he drops the ball from far too high.
