Chris Johnson to Carlton?

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

half-back/midfielder chris johnson has been delisted by melbourne, after the demons and his management could not agree to a new contract.

It is now understood the western australian is eager to pursue his afl career with carlton and could targeted by the blues via the nab afl pre-season draft.

Johnson, 22, played 31 matches for melbourne after being claimed as a father/son selection from east fremantle in the 2003 nab afl draft.

He later made his debut in round eight 2005 against hawthorn.

After entering the 2008 season with 21 games under his belt, johnson produced some fine football in the second half of the season, when he played eight consecutive matches from rounds 12 to 19.

From rounds 14 to 17 this year, johnson collected 108 disposals at an average of 27 touches, including a career-best 33 against the brisbane lions in round 14 – one of melbourne's three wins in 2008.

He missed the demons' final three games of 2008 with a groin injury.

Johnson is the son of 1983 and 1989 melbourne best-and-fairest winner alan.

Hard to get excited by someone who has been delisted by Melbourne, and someone who I haven't seen alot of. Still, I have faith in our recruiters to get the right person in the PSD, should we even decide to use that selection.

Wasn't really de-listed though, Melbourne offered him a deal and he said No.

Check his stats, he can be a real ball magnet, but that said I haven't seen what his usage is like.

Hmm as a MFC supporter I'm not to sure about this one.

He's been on the list for five years now and played about one good month of footy this year where he averaged 27 possies. Kills it at AFL level but not sure whether he can consitently carry over that form into the AFL. Personally I think Shaun Grigg is a much better prospect and they would pretty much be playing in the same position.

Grigg and Johnson are different players. Grigg more inside.

Clubs did go after Johnson during the trade period:

Green, Johnson and Jamar draw interest

"There are a number of clubs interested in Chris Johnson and Mark Jamar and they were the two main ones (players asked about). The clubs have said they've got a strong interest in them and we took that on board and we just move on today," Connolly said.

"Chris is in a position where we're just waiting for some balls to fall with some contractual arrangements and whether he re-signs with the club and Mark's a contracted player."

Connolly said it wasn't necessarily the two West Australian clubs interested in Johnson, who hails from WAFL club East Fremantle.

"No, there a number of clubs," he confirmed.

Interesting move after Ratten said he would like a someone off half back who could hit targets consistently. Johnson cops some criticism for a perceived lack of effort, however his disposal is quite good. Has some pace too so can play on the wing as well.

Thank you Dutchy for your feedback. I am relatively new to the whole internet footy forum thing, and one of the things that I like about this place is sometimes you can get friendly cross team discussion.

This news about Johnson ties in with what Brizzyblue hinted at, that WH likes to recruit proven hard bodies.

When you think about it, a Pfeiffer or Johnson is probably more likely to make it, or at worst be able to make some semblance of contribution at senior level for a while, compared to a kid taken at 69. We all know that kids taken later in the draft have a ridiculously low % chance of playing 100 games. So maybe the club just think we're better off getting a few Pfeiffer's/Johnson's as the odds are stacked more favourably that way, compared to chancing our arm on raw kids every year. Maybe the strategy is about depth, understanding the limitations of the draft.

Chances of a unproven 18 year old making it taken at 69 is let's say 1%. Times that by 3 for 3 consecutive drafts.

Vs.

Chances of a Pfeiffer/Johnson type making it, which might be let's say 5%. Times that by 3 for 3 consecutive drafts.

And as I said maybe it's not about them making it as 150 gamers, cause that is so remote as it is. Maybe it's about depth.

I know some of you will cite the Fishers and Houlihans of this world as examples of kids taken late in the draft who can do OK, and then of course there's the Hirds and Grants, but these are more exceptions to the rule. Reality is we're talking VERY low %s with late picks.

I guess it's hard to make any comment about someone you've hardly seen play.

Is Johnson worth pick 69 since you can remember him using the ball well?

Hughes might take two picks and then shut up shop in this draft if we want to pick CJ with our last pick. ;)

You have to weigh up what will remain in the PSD although some would like us to pick that player late in the draft...even a 17 year old (Hi Paf) to someone like Johnson.

Johnson has had 5 or so pre seasons and provides something coming out of defence we are in desperate need of - pace and good disposal.

Currently we have Armfield and Waite who have very poor disposal coming out of defence while Bower at times can turn it over. Scotland hits targets but often they are wide/safe kicks to someone not in a better position.

I think yeth, yeth, yeth! Caro ith hot!
Edited for accurathy.;)
Anyway, it was just contractual problems rather than footballing ability. He's been around for a while but this year was definitely his best and looked like a real highlight in a disappointing year for Melbourne.
Finds a lot of the ball and importantly uses it very well. Could be a more than handy pickup for us.:thumbsu::)

We'll have to take him with pick 69 if he's a good kick and has pace.

Essendon, St Kilda or another club will be interested in Johnson's services.

Would rather get a Motlop at 69 if he makes to that pick.

I hope we're not thinking about spending pick 40 on Johnson.

Article reports PSD.

Seemed to have taken a while to develop but was very good near the end of the year, racked up plenty of disposals across half back and through the middle. Dominated in the VFL late last year and early this year. He has very good disposal by foot and i'd definitely take him in the PSD.

I would take him in a heart beat.
There is nobody else on offer at pick 6 let alone in the whole psd so we are getting him at a bargin. Even though i have not seen much of him i know he can rack the footy up so i would be willing to give him a go.

If he's no good, then we'll have the chance to pick him up, but he's no good.

If he is rated at all then surely he wont last to us, there wont be much in the way of talent in the PSD.

Johnson didn't get delisted by Melbourne because they wanted him out..
He got delisted because he rejected their initial offer and now wants to come to carlton (who doesn't).

For one, I'd definitely have a good look at him..

Played 10 games this year with an average of 19.7 disposals 6.3 marks and almost 2 tackles.
