Hope he steps up and provides an option too but i can't help but think that it's blokes like Browne, Grigg and (maybe) Army who'll form the basis of our defensive mesh along with Waite, Jammo, Bower, Austin and T-Bird.

Despite the fact he's a good kick, if CJ is in our best 22 in a couple of years instead of a Browne, a Grigg or an O'Keeffe then i would think it unlikely that we'll be as deep into September as we're hoping to be.

Thanks, blb. You'd have to be a little underwhelmed by that as a highlights tape. Talk about brushed off the ball easily. Great left foot and happy to kick on his right but would rather handpass by the looks. It's gonna be interesting to see exactly which way this fella goes. As suggested possibly a dedicated kick-out specialist.

Johnson has freakish kicking ability, especially in the defensive half, and that's what Ratten likes big time. Also tallish at 188cm, which adds to his versatility. :)

Considering there are only 2 games on the clip at least there are 8 minutes to watch.
Hardly highlights but he seems confident to have a bounce and kick out from full back.

Thanks blb I hadn't seen any footage of him :thumbsu:

You would've said Johnson was a spud last year because he was wearing an MFC jumper. Make up your mind Parrot.

According to your imagination? lol. Don't think I've ever commented on Johnson before. What i have commented on is the reason why the Dees won't exist shortly. The Melbourne Football Club is basically weird little organization, dominated by Range-Rover toffs, who are half-interested, and like to occasionally watch their "Beloved Dees" play so long as it doesn't clash with good snow or some other engagement. It's strange because this Toorak set have bucketloads of money, but never commit any of it to their little basket-case of a Club. The players conditions are just woeful. Most of the budget is probably channeled into strawberries and cream and caviar at their board meetings. :)

Johnson is potentially a good get and great value for a pick in the PSD. ;)

You can't be too critical of a player recruited that late in the draft.

Ratten called CJ an elite kick after he hit every target with the kick in drills.

I don't expect a hundred games, yet I'm still rapt he got through to Carlton and past the Bombers.

Johnson is a more likely AFL player than Skipworth with his size and disposal when he's on...

The Demons replaced Johnson with a Clinton Benjamin clone in Liam Jurrah who was the best available.

CJ is not as bad as some Melbourne fans say about him however he's always struggled with performing under pressure. What I mean by pressure is that generally his disposal is poor while being (or about to be) tackled. Out in the open in training situations his skills are very good.

I've always like CJ but if you go back over the last 4 years and looked at discussions on him on our websites most of the views are of frustrations with his ability to handle pressure.

Having said that I hope he can still make it, as I said I liked him (and his old man was an absolute star), hopefully the fresh start will do him good. I just can't see him getting a regular game with Carlton once your younger guys mature

Correct, this is his main problem.

Whether a player chip-kicks or not from defense, is in large part dependent on the teams defensive strategy (if any) rather than the players capability. He has the ability to perform a valuable role in our team. Whether he manages to do that is another matter. But the point is he now has opportunity to prove himself as a footballer at this level. Didn't have that before. :)

For someone with a booming kick he sure chips it around a bit.

He had to at Melbourne. The thing that stood out most to me in the video was how rarely his Melbourne teammates would present, or demand the ball from him. The options were limited & led to him having to go the short option to a teammate close by. His kick-ins from FB easily carried to the 50 & generally found an opponent. Playing in a team that is growing in confidence & with players that demand the ball, Johnson could really get the chance to display his kicking skills.

I think he will provide some value as a runner off HB.

The funny thing is besides some pace I don't think he is that much different to Jordan McMahon...both have question marks over their effort/hardness

The difference is we used a PSD on him...Richmond gave up Callan Ward. :o

Just watch Callan develop further now he is full time and has the hunger after getting a few opportunities this season.

Kicking looks good so thats a good start, and considering we got him for free is another plus.

To be brutally honest Thy, I don't see him being in our best 22, however, he will be a more than handy depth player for us throughout the 2009 season and beyond. As has already been written, has a very very neat left foot, and we may try to use him as our link man when he makes his debut.

I agree with you HBF, he will be a good depth player for us. But you never know mate he might set the world on fire as well.

I would tend to agree.

He seemed to hit the contest a lot with his kicks, and often to the advantage side of his teamate, only for the teamate to spill it or not make a good contest of it.

It is a small sample but from the video he doesn need to get a bit stronger through the hips when he is tackled.....seemed to drop the ball a bit.
Also needs to spear some passes rather than chip them or float them up.

Seems reasonable overhead. In time might release one of Scotland or Carrazzo to the midfield, but should start in the Bullants next year. Not in our best 22 just yet, but hopefully will change that quickly.:thumbsu:

Oh, just stop it....:o

Freakish kicking ability involves players with actual elite footskills that can display them effortlessly and consistently such as Hodge, Didak, Black etc. These left footers have what you call 'freakish kicking ability'.

CJ's kicking is just average. If he were still playing for MFC you would have thought he were a hack who could not get a game for the worst side in the competition.

CJ's kicking is just average.
Average?

He might be an average player but his kicking is exceptional.

Has touch like Black and boom like Hodge. One of the better kicks in the AFL just needs some better players around him to make him play to his full capabilities...

Oh dear....:o

And I thought it could not get any worse....

I never realised how bad his decision making was under pressure. That video is quite funny coincidently the voice in the background remind the audience of yet another ineffective disposal gathered by little Chrissy is Liam Pickering, his very own manager.

Good luck to him though. Can't see him being in your best 22 though when you have much better players like Grigg and Walker.

What's really funny is Melbourne fans rate Jurrah higher than Johnson when Melbourne wanted to re-sign Chris.

The only thing funnier is Richmond fans are over the moon that they have Cousins and are patting their board on the back for doing a good job.

Yet the PSD was meant to be used on McCulloch in the national draft...
