THE VERLAINES (NZ) with SONGS

As far as Antipodean indie pop royalty goes, few can boast the pedigree that Dunedin’s The Verlaines can. Formed in 1981 by Graeme Downes, The Verlaines made their debut recorded appearance a year later on the iconic Kiwi compilation the Dunedin Double EP that also included The Chills, Sneaky Feelings and The Stones. The following two years saw The Verlaines firmly ensconce themselves amongst the exalted in the pantheons of NZ/Flying Nun history with what any consider the band’s signature tune ‘Death & The Maiden’ released in 1983 and the ‘10 O’Clock In The Afternoon’ EP in 1984. The Verlaines’ full-length debut, 1985’s ‘Hallelujah All the Way Home’, was originally submitted as part of a composition project for Downes’s second year composition class, the portfolio in total receiving an A, which bore the heavy influence of his classical background in its exacting compositions, as well as its orchestral and brass flourishes. Now 9 albums down the track, The Verlaines return to Australia for the first time since 1989 off the back of national NZ touring through 2010 in preparation for the release of long player number 10 in 2011.
