I read something in the paper recently that said the Hawks have Chris Langford's son on scholarship, was wondering if anybody knew anything about him?? Is he any good??

They have signed a player who plays with Chris' son, not his son
No each club is allowed to sign people up on scholarship which allows them to play state, or something like that. But he had definately been given some scholarship. He is 16, and could be drafted in the coming years. That is all I know.

Hawthorn Football Club has completed the signing of 16 year-old, Wollongong talent, Jack Mahony over the weekend under the AFL Scholarship Program.

The 179cm utility originates from Wollongong Junior Football Club and is described by Hawks General Manager of Player Personnel and Strategy, Chris Pelchen, as a skilled player, who possesses great athleticism, speed and endurance in the mould of a young Craig Bolton (Sydney Swans).

“Jack’s professionalism in regard to his training, preparation and diet impressed the Club considerably,” Pelchen said.

The Club secured the signature of the Kiama Downs talent, who also drew considerable interest from other AFL clubs.

Mahony joins Hawthorn Football Club as a 2009/10 scholarship recipient making him eligible to be drafted in 2010 at which time, Hawthorn has the option of priority listing Mahony as a rookie or adding him to the primary list.

Mahony featured at the 2008 AFL (NSW/ACT) U16 State Zone Trials as a member of the Pigeons squad where Hawk legend, Chris Langford is an assistant coach and his son William, was a teammate of the Hawks recruit.

Hawthorn Football Club’s signing of Mahony brings the Club’s number of AFL scholarship holders to seven. Other signed players include Dylan Stuart, Heath Caldwell, Thomas Kickett, Trent Stubbs, Michael Johnston and William Sierakowski

Hawk ties bind Langfords, not Sydney

ON May 1, or shortly thereafter, an unheralded Sydney schoolboy is expected to accept the offer of a scholarship from Hawthorn.

It would, in usual circumstances, be nothing more than a silent, speculative purchase of another 15-year-old's dream. Scholarship holders, to encourage and reward clubs who invest in NSW, are effectively claimed before their time to be nurtured and, if good enough, selected as bonus recruits outside the competition's draft system.

A recipient, in the year that he turns 18, can be priority listed by his club before anyone else has the chance to move on him.

The first of a number of quirks in this signing, however, is the identity of the father of the boy in question. Will Langford is the eldest son of Chris Langford, the Sydney-based commissioner and Hawthorn Hall of Fame full-back.

At a time when the league is spending millions to develop the code in NSW and planning to establish a second team in Sydney as early as 2012, it seems likely that the son of one of the men overseeing this aggressive expansion is going to opt for a football future in Melbourne.

"I'm not really that comfortable in my role as a commissioner doing it, but he and I and the system shouldn't be punished because I've got a son," Chris Langford said.

"The over-arching thing is that if he's good enough and he wants to, he will be able to play with the club where there is a family link."

Selected in this year's NSW under-16 AFL squad, Will, an accomplished middle distance runner, first appeared on the scouting radar more than 18 months ago. Hawthorn, because of the father-son connection, kept track of him as did Sydney which, as flag-bearer for the code in the city, is sensitive to the suggestion it has paid too little attention over the years to the local talent.

Both clubs made overtures to Will last year which were declined, according to Chris, because of a concern that his son needed fewer commitments, not more. "Last year, we were opposed to him getting involved in the program. We wanted him just to be a kid," Langford said.

Sydney's interest, though, added a pike to the twist in Will's future. Because the rights granted to clubs who invest in the scholarship program take precedence over a father-son claim, which has to be made through the draft system, the thought that Hawthorn could list Will as a father-son selection in the drafts of 2010 or 2011 had to be put aside.

And, it seems, a scholarship system that would have drawn intense scrutiny if it denied the son of a great player the opportunity to wear the jumper his father wore, will be spared.

"I don't know that you could call it a loophole but it is a fact of the scholarship system that if Will agreed to Sydney's interest, Hawthorn's ability to acquire him as a father-son may have been taken away," Langford said.

Hawthorn's head of personnel and list management, Chris Pelchen, said that as long as the Langfords are happy for their son to make a commitment to football, the Hawks will sign him.

I can't see how Will Langford will accept Sydney's schorlarship over Hawthorns. Surely his father will have to tell him to come to Hawthorn (being a Hawthorn Legend and such).

COMON WILL SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE!!
