Is it only a matter of time before we see him play for Australia in all 3 formats?

Clearly he is an unbelievable power hitter and comfortably in our best T20 side, but what is overlooked is his very good FC average of 44. To put that in perspective, Handscomb was averaging about an even 40 before being selected, and Renshaw around 44. Even Maddinson was given a go averaging 37.

His main issue is being able to stay injury free for a full Shield season, which he hasn't been able to do the last couple of years. Because of his lack of FC matches, much like Pat Cummins, it is unlikely we will see him in the Test side in the short term but I wouldn't be surprised if he is a shock selection for next years Ashes, pending shield form in the lead up.

What are your thoughts on Lynn playing for Oz in longer formats?

I don't see him in tests for a while. But he will be in the T20 squad and possibly ODIs.

Wrote the below comments two years ago as we built up to World Cup squad being picked when Cameron White was picked in ODI side when I felt Chris Lynn was the way to go.
Sadly as entertaining as he is, he has been missing a lot of Shield Cricket so almost going to get stuck seen as just a T20 specialist I fear. Hope he gets shoulder right and plays way more Shield cricket in next 12 months.

Not sure why Cameron White was playing last night. Really thought the way to go was give someone like Chris Lynn a look in for that one off game. White was never going to come in if Clarke does not get fit. Marsh clearly the man for that situation if it occurs. Least last night settled it for those silly enough to keep talking White up. He failed in past World Cup campaign so that was it for him at ODI's imo.

My thoughts are he like Pat Cummins can't be considered for test cricket until they have played a good Shield season. Lynn played I think 1 Shield game last year after playing about 2-3 the year before. He's very injury prone unfortunately.

Yep, Lynn, Pat Cummins, Pattinson, Behrendorff and Coulter-Nile just struggling to get on park long enough to even get their careers off the ground. We should thank our lucky stars Starc is playing at moment. Half the time he seems injured too but he played a lot more than these guys.
Lynn might have missed the boat with Handscomb and Renshaw making a great fist of their entry into Test cricket. He got a better chance of seeing ODI's than Tests in next year. Tests look a long way off for him with so little red ball cricket. I almost given up the hope of seeing Starc, Cummins and Pattinson bowl in same attack. Hazelwood has sealed a spot and his body clearly holds up better than these guys.

Imagine 25 lashings. Then imagine using cats piss on the wounds, then rolling around and smearing runny poo all over your body and pretending you're hiding from the predator. Then imagine running through a shopping mall with a spear in one hand and throwing poo grenades at people. Except the spear doesn't explode, its just a stick.

Imagine all that the next time anyone suggests a T20 specialist for the test team.

Don't have to imagine it, its a regular occurance in Melbourne and Sydney. As will selecting T20 specialist for test matches.

He's a bit better than that. Averages 44 in first class cricket. Hasn't played much first class cricket lately though. His chronic shoulder injury is more likely to hold him back than him being a T20 specialist.

The only reason you think he's a T20 specialist is because he hasn't been able to get on the park for FC cricket lately and you've got a short memory. He has been a promising long-form batsman for much longer than he has been a T20 star.

His domestic FC average is better than Khawaja and Hanscomb let alone Maddinson or whoever. Hardly a T20 specialist, just can't stay fit for whatever reason.

I personally don't think he has the game for Test cricket. He'll run into the sameness problems George Bailey did. As for ODI I could see that happening and he should be getting a serious run in t20I if he isn't already.

As mentioned above though, far too injury prone to even consider for anything other than t20 right now.

Dave Warner

Lynn doesn't play for NSW thats why he has hardly had a chance or name mentioned

Arrh yes of course nothing to do with the bloke playing 4-5 Shield games in 3 years...

Dave Warner

Steve Smith. Mitch Starc. Nathan Lyon (came to prominence in T20 and was initially dismissed by detractors as a T20 specialist, which is quite funny in hindsight).

People have a habit of dismissing players who do well in T20 cricket as being T20 specialists even when FC form indicates that's not the case. Only when players have already established themselves as potential long-term Test players and then go on to dominate T20s does the stigma not appear (e.g. Khawaja).

Love to watch him play - even when he's destroying the Scorchers, the team I support in the BBL.

I haven't seen a batsman hit the ball as consistently hard and long as him before. It's interesting hear him and others say how they just swing as hard as they can and hope he/they get it in the middle. But watching him closely he just has the most perfect technique to generate maximum bat speed - would have been a killer baseballer. That swing is pure perfection.

I'm going to nerd out a bit about his technique. He has exceptional balance and imo the key is his head stays perfectly still. To hit the ball hard in any ball sport the head is the key. If you watch when someone swings really hard the head goes all over the shop, which means the eyes aren't still, which then makes it easy for everything else to get out of shape. Keep that head as still as possible and let the good times roll. His swing is actually really short allowing him to generate huge amounts of bat speed and at the point of impact he gets exceptional extension with his arms. It's just the most perfect goddamn swing I've ever seen. I am in awe.

Absolutely has to be selected in the ODI team.

Definitely should be playing in the shorter forms. Probably comes in for Head.

Warner scores his runs using proper cricket shots even when he was a T20 specialist. Lynn slogs to cow corner more often. Will need first class runs to break into the test team.

Much better FC player than he gets credit for being, but at 27 and struggling to stay on the park he is up against it.

Realistically if everything goes perfectly he needs 1-2 seasons of good Shield form to be in contention. At that point he'll be pushing 30 and will need to be putting up exceptional numbers to be considered.

Unless they have another major cleanout of the selection panel, I don't think he'll ever get a baggy green regardless of how well he plays or how fit he stays.
