This bloke continues to get surrounded with youth and they continue to develop . His efforts in the first half where outstanding . Continually puts his body on the line and is severly underrated around here , absolute and utter gem, who has been in our best 5 players for the past 6 seasons and continues in similar vein . Forget about ripping the captaincy off him , he has the right to keep the title till he retires which I hope isn't any time soon .

Thought Newman played a better game last week when we lost...everything he did was one touch class disposal...

Looks a better player and makes fewer glaring clangers when the team steps up and shares the load/pressure...same can be said for Rance...Edwards...Jacko...

Dont have a problem with him being Captain with his current good form holding...

Lids and Cotch both turned it over with woeful disposal albeit ~1x each. Newy was good, will be better.

Hope Newy doesnt get lost now that he seems to have a reliable backline, kind expect him to be standing around in the bp with a tinny, going 'nah, the boys' got this....' after the past decade.

If Griff backs up his form, going to be wondering who to put where once Batch & Grimes come back in, a problem weve been looking forward to!

Lets see Chrissy kicking goals from the wing or hff!

Agree with this. I recon he would be great off the wing and the boys up forward would lick their lips seeing Newy running at them with ball in hand.

I thought he was WOG in the first half. Mde more clangers than anyone.
Lifted in the 2nd half though.
Would still have had him in our bottom 5 players yesterday.

When the game was in the balance Tugg no-one was going harder at it , some of his work in assisting with defending Buddy was first rate .

His 1st first half stunk it up though, but yeah, he lifted in the 2nd. I still don't think he had much of an influence in general play.

I was talking about his efforts defensively in the first half , he dived and spoiled plenty which led to 50/50 rather than goals to Hawthorn .

Did a lot of work...one stage noticed his face was red and sweaty and was blowing hard...trying to drink the fluid bottle...

Seriously under rated by many. Has lead the backline admirably when you consider just how young and inexperienced it has been this year.

Yesterday I thought he played the sweepers role perfectly, simply sat back and marshalled the troops and gave them plenty of support and guidance.

Rance marshalls the back line IMO.

But as a leader off the field i cannot fault Newman. He, Gale, Hardwick and Cotch are the biggest instigators in the turning around of this club. That being said his efforts in the first two games and the 3 replays i've see (sydney, essendon and hawks) have been a little underwhelming. Really missin gthos captain goals that he hit last year and the year before and just his kicking in general seems to be down.

How anyone could not rate his game yesterday is beyond me.

Puts his body on the line, chops off opposition kicks and rarely misses a target. When he's allowed to play the role of sweeper (he wasn't against Essendon, they put a lot of work into him) the whole team looks so much better.

Had two pretty poor moments in the first quarter yesterday, which really seem to stand out to most. Watching the replay, he was still well ahead of the ledger at half time. A lot of very good reading of the play to cut off forward thrusts, either by marking or spoiling. Definitely still underrated IMO.

He has a cool head des newy and knowing people tht are close to him they speak volumes for his leadership:thumbsu:

This ^^^^

Did anyone here Harleys comment during the game "one of my favorite captains in the comp". harley was a great leader at a great club in a great era. To hear this from him only adds to the fact that he is underrated on here. Your captain does not need to be your best player, there is so much more to it and I believe he deserves more respect. He gives his all and never takes a backward step.

Its obvious the players look up to him.

TBH I completely disagree.

Think he has had a really poor season by his standards. Had goals kicked on him, turned it over or gone for ridiculously dangerous kicks that aren't needed in the moment.

No way he is in our top 5 players. Was poor last week against the dons only had 8 touches and got goals kicked on him.

In saying that he is still in our 22 and will always be I just think maybe it's time to release him up the ground to the HFF and see how he goes as Batch, Grimes coming back in.

His hardness is important though.
