Chris Newman had an interview after the game on MMM yesterday and I thought that what he said was quite regulation. He said that the players were hurting a lot, etc, etc... you've heard it all before.

But what I did find interesting (and I left right on the final siren) was that the MMM commentators said that Chris actually teared up after the game - thats how upset he was.

I'm sure Chris is feeling just as much stress as anyone else at this point in time. Yet to win a match as captain and had such a poor game yesterday (after a great start to the season), I'm sure he was desperate for a win yesterday.

zero tackles.
Actions not words are required.

crying after the game is really going to inspire his team mates.

should step down. he is probably the worst captain in the league and possibly ever.

newman has absolutely 0 impact or influence on any game. I am yet to see him kick a captains goal or lay a captains tackle so far this year.

all i see is a (shit) captains turnover or (shit) captains disappearing act.

Yeah, the last captain to do that after a disappointing loss was.....

Tom Harley

Newman is a player of great character and I actually like the fact that he can be emotional. He has had the greatest baptism of fire of any new captain I can recall in recent memory. In the short-term this may contribute to some inconsistency, but in the long-term I think we have made a very astute choice of a young leader who will lead us into a successful period. Think back to his recovery from a broken leg in 2006 or the high level of consistency and work-rate he has shown since his 2002 debut.

He would be as disappointed in his effort yesterday as anyone. Sometimes you can try too hard to win and the whole side looked like that yesterday. Just like we had a huge knot in the stomach - or maybe that was the pain i felt in watching it unfold. But I know that Newman will emerge out the other side a stronger leader. Cut him some slack

I like him as Captain, lets face it, who else is there?
My only riff with the bloke is he doesn't seem to fire the boys up, needs to get in the huddle and become a dictator instead of being a middle man for Wallace like Johnson was.

Newman has Captained 4 games. His style will develop once he becomes more confident in his role.... If we come out of this at the end of the day, we will probably have a great Captain. This the Making of.

Chris is not leading by example right now. Talk is cheap. Our backline has disintegrated.

Richo should be captain.

Sure he might not have the best body language, but he tries his guts out every game and has an impact.

He is probably in his final year, and he should at least go out on that high.

If there is one thing the Tigers lack (beside footskills), it is inspiration.

Richo has that in spades.

Edit:
Was listening to the game on radio, and barely heard Newman's name mentioned throughout.

couldnt disagree more .. as much as i love richo.. his chance to be captain passed many years ago.. although he represents alot of the attributes you would look for in a captain, giving him the captaincy for a year would just be stupid.

i think chris is doing a good job and as many people have said will mature into the role, although i would like to see him take more control of the playing group, its a sad time when two players in their 2nd game in Rance and Nahas seem to be doing the most to pump up the side when your 6 goals down against last yrs spooners

Totally uninspired & visionless choice as Captain, a reflection of the state of our club... should've been Lids or Foley...

That "disappointing loss" was in September, not April...:o

Newman has been outstanding so far, coming into a role at the worst possible time. Every day it seems there is an interview with him in the papers or AFL website. He's doing the hard yards and doing it very well I reckon.

Possibly he was crying because as he walked down the race I was leaning over yelling "get ****ed!" a few times.

I may have been the most angry and dispirited I've been in my life. I chose to express this. I'm comfortable with my decision.

Unfortunately Newman would be rated in the 3 worst captains in the AFL atm, along with Maxwell and McDonald.

One of the glaring weaknesses on our list, and it keeps escaping attention, is we do not have a plethora of natural leaders on our playing list. We especially do not have a lot amongst our younger players.

Cotchin has the earmarks of a leader but there is not too many others.

Our best leaders currently, unfortunately, are over 30. Our best 3 leaders are Richo, as he is inspirational. Bowden, the president of the AFLPA, so all players in the AFL know his leadership abilities and qualities and Sugar, who is on the LTIL.

yep, that's just the support they need at the moment.

ah yes, the wankiest of wanky footy calls - the captain's goal.
BTW, the captain is THE most overrated role in footy. Nobody thought anything much of Harley, Geelong won the flag and all of a sudden apparently he's the BEST captain in the league. Spare me.

Couldnt agree more, there are many captains out there who provide more han he does. He only got the job because mooney kept getting suspended and was seen as "undisciplined".
