Civ 4

I am trying to get back into this game (basically so I don't rush through Mario galaxy), I have Warlords expansion and Beyond the Sword is ... on it's way.

I know there a few old threads about this but I wanted to get some general tips on things like the best places to build cities and what are the best Civilizations to use and good strategies.

I am currently playing a giant earth map mod, which kind of limits your choices for leaders but is great (although it gets very crowded when all Civs are revealed, especially if you start in Europe as someone like the Celts).

I'm a bit of an idiot when it comes to this game and just choose any race that looks cool (Russian, German, Celts). Recently my giant map mod has been stuffing up so there goes my hopes of playing as Russia or the Celts (my fav civs for no reason) with the goal of conquering Australia.
