Roast Clanger Kings

Adams. Langdon. Greenwood. Treloar.

Sometimes our midfield looks like a Sam Peckinpah movie.

Where do we rank in the league for clangers?
Last year, 14th highest. So pretty good compared to rest of the league. If we traded Adams, we would be 17th in the league.

Bulldogs make the least clangers followed by Hawthorn.

Richmond are top of the league in clangers and they won the premiership! 2nd was Adelaide. So the two grand finals teams. Quirky stat.

That's interesting regarding Richmond and Adelaide. My impression is that they look to get the ball forward quickly and irrespective of risk or the messiness of entry. That chaos ball that catches out the zone. Adelaide win through forward class and Richmond through manic pressure. I could be off the mark there but to me it indicates the importance of getting the ball forward quickly.

I'd love to see the stat breakdown of where on the ground the clangers occur. Forward, midfield or defence? Corridor or wide? It's interesting stuff.

I think our conversion rate per entries into our forward fifty is pretty bad. I'd also be interested to know where we rank for loose ball gets inside 50.

In 2017, the top clangers stats were as follows, for our club:
1. Adams 96 (6th highest in AFL)
2. Treloar 81 (16th)
3. Grundy 74 (38th)
4. Sidebottom 71(47th)

No other magpie player in top 100.

OK, so you're gonna have to normalize the numbers because those guys probably get more of the ball... % of possessions which result in a clanger maybe...

I think that's where we really fall down. Loose ball gets and forward pressure. It's how we need to structure our forward line with the list we have also because we don't have a dominant key forward.

Adams is the worst

Players named above like Phillips (No where near it), Greenwood (again not as bad)

Crisps round 1 was atrocious but Saturday was great.

Top 10 Average per game
1. Adams 4.4 clangers (29.5 disposals)
2. Treloar 3.9 (29.9)
3. Grundy 3.7 (18.4)
4. Sidebottom 3.2 (27.3)
5. Thomas 2.8 (16.4)
6. Howe, Pendlebury, Blair 2.6 (21.8, 28.1, 12)
9. Scharenberg, Daicos 2.5 (20.2, 11)

If you are going by %, Blair is the worst, followed by Grundy and Adams.
Thomas, Scharenberg and Daicos sample sizes are too small to read into their averages.

If Adams cracks the top ten again we should delist him. Treloar being in the top 16 is pretty bad too.

After Round 2, Adams is equal 3rd with 12 (6 per game).
3 behind the leader Nat Fyfe.

Treloar has 7 clangers for the season (after Round 2) and is ranked outside top 100.

Free kicks still count as clingers?
Yes. Probably explains why Grundy has a high count.

Examples of clangers include,

  • Any disposal or deliberate knock-on that goes directly to an opposition player.
  • Any free kick conceded
  • Dropped marks or fumbles under no pressure
  • 50-metre penalties conceded
  • A Ball-Up Kick In (Stepping over the line when kicking in after a behind)

Greenwood.. all heart.. atrocious kick.

Offload him for pick 70.
Greenwood is out of contract at seasons end.
They will either not re-sign him or he will get a minimum salary 1 year deal (if they think he is still useful).

I didnt mind him towards the 2nd half of last year as a defensive forward. He certainly hit the scoreboard more than what Blair did in that role.
