Bit of talk around his future and he keeps throwing the media little teasers about moving on although I highly suspect he is just trolling the media.

Nonetheless if he enters next year without a contract do we throw the chequebook at him?

If Pyke cant get it done this year do we wonder about what else is out there?

Not a kneejerk reaction to last night and I quite like Pyke (rhymes for days) but I just wonder what we think about looking at who is coming out of contract in the next year or 2.
Clarko is not conservative enough for the adelaide crows. Clarko is the best coach in the league by far and the best of all time imo. There will be no success under pyke and things will end badly for him as they ended for neale craig. Better to cut your losses early. We will not get clarko but we should be on the lookout for the next clarko.

Clarko wasn't a world beater when he started coaching at Hawthorn. He began at Hawks in 2005, and they won their premiership under Clarko in 2008. It's unfair to compare Don with Clarko at this stage, because it's too early for a comparison. The only thing I can take out of this, is that Pyke has done a very commendable job with the turmoils that's been happening over the last 2 years.
Don't forget Clarko had the core foundations of a dangerous forward line with Hawks having first picks in Franklin and Roughead, and the Hodge early pick setting up their core defense. With the years of rebuilding in 2005-2007, he had a fair few decent draft choices at his disposal.

All fair points and this isnt realy about Pyke and how he stacks up bs Clarko Its more about at what point does the club (if ever) go all in in the window if they were able to lure Clarko. Would they? Or would we back Pyke?

But Pyke needs to have the balls to tell the club he needs new assistants. Campo and Clarke have had a good run. To go to the next level under Pyke I think we need something new. Perhaps, a couple of assistants that haven't been out of the game so long.

The issue is as much who we can attract, more so than who we want. Unless they’re locals returning home, mates of the senior coach or you have a premiership coach, it’s hard to attract quality, experienced assistants to a non-Victorian club.

Not only do we have a hard sell to convince assistant coaches to come across, to convince the good ones is nigh impossible because it’s far easier for them to ether stay in Melbourne, given there’s essentially 10 employers, or a better idea to move there than Adelaide for the same reason.

I suspect this may be one of the reasons we grabbed Gibson, similar to Podsiadly. Similar West Coast with Mitchell and Brisbane with Hodge. Get them across before they retire and hopefully convince them to stay for a while.

It’s not necessarily ideal, but I think we have to be creative.

With regards to Clarkson, it’s depend where we’re at as a club, although I don’t see Pyke moving on anytime soon. I think Malthouse to Carlton, Pagan to Carlton and Blight to St Kilda great example of the dangers of bringing across a big name coach for the sake of it. They have to be the right fit.

Clarksons been at Hawthorn a long time, does he really want to start again at a new coach? Does he have the energy or is he burned out? Will he just clash with anyone and everyone at the club if things don’t work the same way as at Hawthorn?

Not saying you wouldn’t ask the question, just that you’d want a clear idea of where his heads at and whether he’s the right fit for your organisation. Otherwise you could very quickly end up like Carlton.

Is that true though? Pyke was an assistant. Voss is a big name, not that I want him. I think there are more than enough good potential assistants that we could attract. I don’t really have any names, but we have been stuck on these two for 10 years. That can’t be because there is nobody else interested.

You answered your own question re Voss, no one wanted him. Also Hinkley was a journeyman assistant coach/player, similar to Walsh, he has a shot tonne of contacts east of the border which he can use to convince guys to come across.

Pyke had no coaching experience when he came across to us, that was also 13 odd years ago. Who are the other big named assistants we’ve attracted? Todd Viney, Peter Jonas and Campo were all south aussies. Bailey was a good get, but had coached at Port for a number of years, so strong links. Teague was mates of Walsh.

Pyke may be able to attract an assistant from WA, but until he wins a premiership, it’ll be tough attracting non-south aussies across. We may have more luck as Pyke gains experience, but I suspect the club doesn’t want to throw away experienced employees whom they feel are doing a reasonable job for just anyone.

For the record I don’t disagree that Campos been around far too long and would love to see us bring in a quality assistant and hope we’re trying. I just recognize it’s not as easy as some may think.

Don’t we have new assistants?

Isn’t Campo the only line coach he started with?
I think the issue may have been he's wanted a few guys in the past and each time the Crows have failed to get them over. He wanted Longmuir as his defensive assistant, deal wasn't done and we pretty much had to beg Pods to take the role when he was only earmarked for a part time assistant role. I think he wanted Sumich over too and he didn't get a deal either. Hart we pinged because he literally couldn't get a job even with a VFA club from what I heard and Francou was almost lucky in that he wanted to come back to Adelaide.

I think the bigger issue with Clarke and Campo is it almost feels like we're keeping them purely for the "They're good blokes and have been quality servents of the club" reasons.

You might think it's not a knee-jerk reaction, but that's exactly what it is. We just won a minor premiership and played in a Grand Final with a coach in just his second year, and you've started a thread to discuss a pipe dream. If you want to discuss coaching changes try focusing on the assistants instead, that's one area where we could use some fresh air.

As for Clarkson, he's an all-time great, but that doesn't mean he has the drive or desire to start over at another club.

I think i have explained pretty well in subsequent posts that this isnt a Pyke thread or Clarko Vs Pyke- its a discussion on how ruthless the board might get if they see the window closing shut withiut success and a big fish like Clarko was available.

So you want a discussion regarding the board's willingness to make a change without taking into account the merits of their options, and you can't see where you've gone wrong?

No, im looking at a discussion of strategic planning should there be a great coach to throw money at.

Im taking exception to the thought this is kneejerk to a loss - ive wondered this since we traded for Gibbs.
