Not football related, but my favourite cricket quote came from Brian Johnston of the BBC, who was commenting in an England vs West Indies test match at The Oval in 1976. Michael Holding of the West Indies was bowling to Peter Willey of England at the time:

"The bowler's Holding, the batsman's Willey"

I can only imagine the mischief he would have got up to if he was commentating when Joe Root of England was bowling to Murali Vijay of India in the England vs India test at Nottingham a few weeks ago...

Too many from cricket, but here are some words of wisdom from the Fat Cat for those Geelong barrackers who think the press victimises us:
Q: Do you feel that the selectors and yourself have been
vindicated by the result?
A: I don't think the press are vindictive. They can write what
they want.

- Mike Gatting, ITV

From Boot in Mouth:

"The Ablett brothers are hard to tell apart- although one has a beard," Doug Wade.

"The reason Lewis hasn't done too much at centre half-forward is that he's still sitting on the interchange bench," Bob Skilton

"It's not a bad sort of a kick but just off-line- and through for a goal," Lou Richards.

"South Melbourne play better in the rain than they do in the wet," Tom Lahiff.

"Matthews is ******ed- but only slightly," Peter Landy.

If you like the BiM stuff, British magazine Private Eye has been collecting them for years in a column called Colemanballs after the sports commentator David Coleman.
