not bad considering when he took over we had a forward/back/middle problem.

now we just have a middle problem :)

I think it has been clear for a while. The official FFC website articles don't go back past the start of last year, but I certainly remember this being an issue at least since the 2003 finals elimination.

NOTE: I know I'm a clown for selectively taking pieces of articles to further my argument, but in fairness, there aren't a heap of references to support what a great job the coaching staff have done to fix this.

Freo not blaming travel

Fremantle coach Chris Connolly admits the Dockers have 'dropped their guard' in their last two assignments east, but he is not using the travel factor as an excuse.

"Our two travelling games have been poor," admitted Connolly following the last quarter fade-out against the Lions on Sunday at the Gabba, when they lost by 68 points.

---------------
According to Connolly, the Fremantle midfield must lift and perform 'the basic fundamentals' in order to provide gun forward Matthew Pavlich the same opportunity as his Brisbane counterpart.

"We were out-muscled around the ball - we don’t expect that to happen," he observed.

"It is a combination of firstly winning the ball and that was the most disappointing thing - controlling the ball under physical pressure.

"But also our run through the midfield was not there to give our forwards access to quick ball movement."

Freo to rotate rucks

Fremantle assistant coach Mark Harvey has admitted the team is struggling in the stoppages without No. 1 ruckman Aaron Sandilands, but believed the club could fill the void by experimenting and rotating players through the area.

----------------
The Dockers were thrashed 40-23 in the clearances in their 35-point win over the Kangaroos at Subiaco Oval on Saturday, and Harvey said the club would start experimenting with different ruck combinations and tactics around the ground.

"Well I think it (clearances) have been a bit of a problem since Aaron (Sandilands) went out of the side," Harvey said after the win.

What the papers say

The West Australian: Fremantle coach Chris Connolly has put the heat on ruckman Aaron Sandilands, declaring the side's woeful centre bounce clearance record won't improve unless the 211cm giant becomes less predictable.

Keep the faith: Connolly

Fremantle coach Chris Connolly has urged the Dockers' long-suffering supporters not to panic in the wake of the club's disappointing first round performance against Hawthorn at Aurora Stadium on Sunday.

------------
"The centre bounce (clearances) was 9-1 (in the third quarter) so they certainly annihilated us there and they were able to finish off and Mark Williams (eight goals) was terrific up forward for them."

Port had the chemistry: Connolly

Fremantle coach Chris Connolly says the Power's "chemistry" gave it the edge over the Dockers at AAMI Stadium on Saturday night.

------------------
But he does admit the team will need to bolster its personnel if it is to become a true finals contender.

"We need to strengthen our midfield, we've just got to get harder and stronger and smarter in and around the ball," he says.

"When we've struggled against the top teams it's been our inability to win the ball and then execute our ball use properly."

"So we need more depth and we need to find some really hard and consistent performers in there (centre square)."

Connolly defends backline structure

Fremantle coach Chris Connolly lamented his side’s inexperienced defence in the wake of his team’s 38-point loss to the Sydney Swans at the SCG on Sunday.

While Connolly highlighted skill errors and getting beaten around the stoppages, he also said a backline short on experience forced him to use some of his playmakers deep in defence.

---------------
“To Sydney’s credit they really dominated the clearances, took advantage of some poor play by ourselves and poor disposal, and our younger defenders couldn’t hold up the senior forwards for Sydney.”

Pace not a problem

Fremantle’s new look engine room isn’t struggling for pace and still enjoys the wide open spaces of Subiaco Oval despite being overrun in their past two matches at home.

In his second stint at Fremantle, Heath Black believes the club’s midfield is better equipped than at any other time in Fremantle’s short history and the perceived lack of run through the centre can be attributed to players not sticking to the game plan.

“I think it’s more related to our ball movement,” Black said.

“It might look like our ball movement is slow at the moment because it’s not flowing football. When we take risks and play on I think we’re one of the quicker midfields,” he added.

Connolly praises Freo's composure

Fremantle coach Chris Connolly says the Dockers' breakthrough victory in Geelong was significant for the club both in the short-term and long-term.

------------------
Connolly said the upset win was achieved by gaining the ascendancy through the midfield where the Dockers consistently had the better of their Geelong opponents, particularly Peter Bell and Paul Hasleby.

"I think our midfield has had an average season. We've got a fair bit of experience in there and talented players but the chemistry's not there yet," he said.

"Our clearances in the first four rounds were poor. We got those back on track. Just our chemistry around the field - it hasn't been there yet, we feel.

"But our midfield was very, very good today so maybe we're seeing some signs of taking some big steps forward."

Fine-tuning the engine room

Mark White

The injection of several talented and experienced midfielders into Fremantle’s line-up this season has added extra impetus to the club’s engine room and handed the challenge to Assistant Coach Steve Malaxos of adding the new parts to a well oiled machine.

While Josh Carr, Heath Black and Jarrad Schofield are all seasoned AFL players their arrival at the club has meant adapting to a new environment and creating a connection with established Fremantle midfielders including Peter Bell, Paul Hasleby, Troy Cook and Byron Schammer.

Malaxos is the club’s midfield mentor and has been working hard with the new look group and says he’s delighted with the progress they’ve made in a short time together.

“I think they have teamed together pretty well,” he said.

See Purp blings post above.

It is just taking a cheap shot to say that CC has just realised it.

We you one of the people insisting Pav got moved out of the Midfield?

I don't care where Pav plays. Stick him on a half back flank if that's going to be good for the team and help us win games of footy.

We've known for years that we struggle at clearances. He's recruited experienced midfielders in Headland, Schofield, Carr and Black. Either Connolly has traded for the wrong players and got the mix wrong or he is coaching them poorly.

The records stuck , the records stuck. Did you watch the Bombres vs Saints game today?

If you did you would have seen that the Bombres flogged the Saints at the clearances as well. Only difference was that the saints were fortunate to fall over the line.
