"This decision was not easy for me, and it was one into which I put a great deal of thought," Browns president Mike Holmgren said in a statement. "Although we have made improvements this season, my responsibility is to ensure that we establish a program that will allow this team to compete at a championship level. That will continue to be our goal in everything we do. I want to thank Eric for all of his contributions to the Cleveland Browns, and wish him and his family the best of luck in the future."

What Holmgren really meant to say....

"This decision was very easy for me, and one which didn't require much thought. Although we have made improvements this season, Eric Mangini does NOT fit into a program that will allow this team to compete at a championship level."

Holmgren had to answer more questions in his press conference about whether he'd consider himself for the job than there were about Mangini.

After the shitful showing in the last game, Holmgren should have come onto the field half way through the 2nd and kicked Mangini out of the stadium and put on the head phones himself. Would have given the fans something to cheer about.

Funnily enough, 1/2 way through the season I thought he may get another year. Losses to the Bills, Bengals, Jax and the drubbing by Pitt sealed his fate.

I thought they were doing good and McCoy was looking better. The wheels really came off though on Sunday. Couldn't even beat the Pittsburgh seconds.

Holmgren gives Mangini Wallace and Delhomme, no receivers and expects miracles. 8 weeks ago they defeated Saints and Pats, Mangini outcoached BB. Lost narrowly to the Jets and Jags. In fact lost 7 games by 7 pts or less.

McCoy was showing promise.

Not exactly a fan of Mangini but this is the biggest bullshit sacking for a while.

I think you'll find Holmgren never wanted him anyway and was going to do this regardless.

like, a playoff birth might have kept him in the job, but 5-11 won't.

That's the NFL/NCAA....people hire people they've worked with before, people who are part of their own coaching tree, sign players that played for them at other teams before, etc etc.
It's not just the NFL/ NCAA - it's real life. Anyone would rather hire someone they personally know can do the job rather than taking a gamble on someone who you don't know could do the job.

and lost games we were expected to win like the Bills and Bengals.

Half way through the season I wouldn't have been to disappointed if he was given another year, but given the whole season and its lack of consistency, questionable coaching calls and no improvement in W-L from last year, it was the right call to make.

McCoy is showing promise and I wouldn't expect him to lose the starting QB and would expect him to improve if we get a good OC plus some WR's.

TGBB made some good points but I'm with the school of thought that 5-11 doesn't give you much cause to keep persisting with, considering much of the positives. At least half of close games should of been WINS if Mangini was the genius he gets credit for.

I agree with GG that the Holmgren will twig his own branch of contacts to get this project back on track. As a Steelers fan, it's a great thing that the Browns care to become competitive. Division credibility is where it's at. The Bengals have won TWO Division titles in last 5 years. The Ravens have claimed the Division title twice since their inception but have made the post-season in 3 of the last 4 seasons. That's where the Browns have to aim. Getting a winning record in the AFC North isn't easy so every drop of blood, sweat n' tears will count for something in the near future. Drafting / signing veteran playmakers is just as important to having a healthy list. Coaching a winning culture back is why Holmgren was given the GM's job.
