It was one bad test.

They beat us in Melbourne with one of their all-time great attacks, it was only in Brisbane that they had that many out.

And if that's the case, they should have sacked him then and there'd be no argument. By having such a great summer, they've been put in a position where they just look stupid now.

Agree Langer could and probably should have offer to resign a year ago. Paine should have moved on as well. Had they done so, they would have been lauded.

Thinking more about it I thought a proven experienced coach in Gillespie shout have replaced Boof. Langer had an ordinary red ball coaching record. A concerted media campaign got JL the job. That and his brown nosing.

For what it's worth - I don't buy the idea that the Home Ashes series win is somehow depleted because England were rubbish, worst team to tour here etc etc.

At the end of the day, you can only play the team the opposition puts on the park, and a series win is a series win.

Sure, history may say the 06/07 series win was better because the opposition was stronger, but you can't blame our team or the coach for the fact the opposition was rubbish.

Any Aussie rules team that won a flag against a weakened opposition (say due to injuries) would not place an asterisk next to that flag - it will remain a premiership and it ought to.

You can only beat the opposition in front of you on the day.

Well then you could say cummins as the leader of the side that won that series earned the right to have the support staff he wants, it's his side now after all not langers side the skipper needs to lead the team in test cricket not a coach so paine/langer may have worked for those two but cummins/langer wasnt going to work for cummins so they move on just as has been done countless times in past in this exact situation.

Another WA poster, I'm shocked.
Seems to be mostly angry WA people (outside of former teammates) on here and Twitter getting fired up about this decision, funny that, almost like they are slightly biased in their views… The rest seem to understand that while Langer deserves some credit for his coaching tenure, he has clearly lost the players over the last 18 months and that just isn’t tenable long term. Andrew McDonald has clearly been running that T20 side for a while now too, this isn’t a new revelation or a secret.

Some of the bashing of Cummins on Twitter from a few journos in WA is a disgrace, it’s like he personally made the decision himself and pushed Langer out the door in their eyes.

Right or wrong the players are going to be under public pressure to perform in Asia and at the home T20 World Cup.

Good luck lads.
They were always under pressure to perform on the sub continent and WC, this has changed zero.

Life is too short to be coached by someone like Langer. Its a workplace after all. You can get results without being a grumpy intimidating w***er. This is proven in absolutely every modern sport.

As a coach he hasn’t proved that at all

It seems Langer is pretty intent on making it about him given all his mates who've given voice in the press to support him which seems at odds with his expressed team first ethos. Results aside it's hard to believe that Langer is putting the team first when he's trying to insert himself into a dressing room where it's been suggested a good section of the team don't really want him there.

Langer is gone, now its up to those who believe the team will continue to succeed to put up, not go back to 'sandpaper set' calling the shots.

Anyone potshotting Cummins is off the mark, it’s the board who deserve any criticism for the way this was handled.

And it’s hardly a NSW vs WA issue for any reasonable person. In fact I think most WA fans are okay with Langer stepping down, we just feel that he hasn’t been allowed a very dignified exit. For a great of the game from our part of the world, that stings more than a little.

CA plans have blown up in there faces hoping Langer would sign the extension so they could have their fall guy in the sub continent and T20 wc but he told them to get ****ed, the pressure wont be on the new coach it will be on the player’s and captain who back stabbed Langer good luck boys cos you know the media will be coming for you

He was still given an extension which would have taken him to next home summer. Personally that’s actually fair enough. Prove yourself that you can win overseas. Langer hasn’t shown that. Sometimes the hard decision is the correct one, more than happy with this call.
A 6 month contract extension when you know you won't be staying on after that is a slap in the face.

Langer was hardly given much of an opportunity to win overseas due to the lack of cricket being played. The overseas Ashes should've been a W if it weren't for some idiocy by Tim Paine and a missed run out by Lyon.

Let's also not forgot not to mention the fact that he took over the side after it was at its lowest ebb ever, and without 2 of its best players for 12 months. To almost win an overseas Ashes after that, then go onto win the T20 WC and home Ashes 4-0 is a fantastic result.

Langer was axed due to the fact that he upset a few players because he enforced discipline, something that was sorely missing prior to him coming on board which led to sandpaper gate.

Interesting to read Andrew Strauss: https://www.bbc.com/sport/cricket/60260548
'In a wide-ranging media conference at Lord's, Strauss and England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive Tom Harrison confirmed Joe Root will remain as Test captain.

However, Strauss said he will not be the permanent director of cricket and refused to rule out the possibility of Australia head coach Justin Langer becoming Silverwood's replacement.

"I feel like someone who has an outside view, who can challenge the thoughts inside the dressing room, is a healthy thing," said Strauss.

"There is a way forward that does include an independent view on that."

Sandpapergate was an example of the inmates running the asylum & the same crew are back in charge AGAIN.

This would be quite a turnaround

I personally think JL is too invested in the mystique of the Baggy Green to coach England.

Whats happened to him may change things. And he needs a job.

But mentally it would be a big ask as a proud Australian to go over and coach the old enemy in England

If Eddie Jones eventually coached the English Rugby Union team after a decent stint with the Australian team a decade earlier Langer coaching the English cricket team is not out of the realms of possibility. Vaughan was high on Langer becoming the English coach.

Cummins is a genuine snake in the grass. I don’t see how his teammates who aren’t in the NSW sandpaper gang(smith, khwaja, starc, Hazelwood, Lyon, Warner) could trust him to be honest.

I think it says a lot about his character, and indeed the character of he and his mates is the reason Langer got the job in the first place after they disgraced the country.

I’ve got zero respect for him and the way he has handled this, as for the board, well their ineptitude created this environment. But their ineptitude also created the environment for sandpaper gate.

I wouldn't go that far but this has certainly been a black mark on Cummins career the perception of stabbing the coach in the back

and if Bayliss gets the nod its only going to intensify the situation

Mitch Johnson has taken aim at Pat Cummins.

‘Gutless’: Test legend Mitchell Johnson reveals disdain for Pat Cummins

Aussie cricket cult figure Mitchell Johnson has turned on his former teammate Pat Cummins in an extraordinary public attack.

“Pat Cummins has been lauded as some type of cricketing saint since his elevation to the top job this summer. Cummins might have delivered with the ball during the Ashes series, but he has failed his first big test as captain pretty miserably,” Johnson wrote in a column forThe West Australian.

“He had plenty of public opportunities to endorse an extension for Langer. So when he let it through to the keeper every time, it became pretty obvious he didn’t want it to happen.

“Cummins holds a lot of power and must have been central to what’s happened. He’s clearly had an agenda to get in a coach he wants. His recent interviews have been gutless by not respecting his coach when he could have been upfront from the start.”
