As a pretext, I don't want this to be viewed as my overall opinion of the match as a whole. We lost because we weren't up to it, all over the ground. And that's okay, we'll butter up and go again.

But.

Blair Hartley scouts out and recruits us a key backman in Chaplin. By all reports he is brought in to be our rock, our gorilla, our 'monster backman'.

Travis Cloke gives Rance a bath today in the third quarter with the game so clearly on a knife's-edge, and I sit in the stands screaming again and again to move our best 1 on 1 defender onto him.

Now he wouldn't have stopped Travis altogether. I don't know if he would have stemmed the flow. But he stops maybe one or two goals, keeps the flood-gates closed.

Maybe he doesn't have the motor to go with Cloke yet, or at all. Easy. Rance takes him at half forward, Chaplin when he's in the square.

Not saying it's the reason we lost, or that we have bad coaches. But a big big blue from the box today. Could not have been more clear cut for mine.

Saw it in the Carlton game as well and don't want to see it again. Chaplin takes the biggest, most potent forward, not Rance. He does what we recruited him for.

Go back and watch some of Rance's best games last year. You're underselling him massively there.

He's a great defender but he is never ever going to consistently beat players with so much size and core strength over him.

And to be clear this thread is about the coaching decision of Chaplin's opponent, not about whether Rance is any good or not.

I agree with playing Chaplin on the biggest forward. Cloke got all of his ball inside the 50 today and wasn't forced to push the up the ground. This would of suited Chaplin because he wouldn't have to chase Cloke. Playing Chaplin lose in the defensive 50 is a waste. Rance would be a lot more suited to being the lose man. I don't really know what Dimma is trying to do with Chaplin. Chaplin should be playing in the role we recruited him for. Hopefully Chaplin recovers from his concussion okay.

Rance's negatives

- Not as strong
- Falls over a bit

Chaplin's postives
- Strong (er then Rance)
- Can keep his feet in a contest.

I love Rance, he's one of my favourites, but Chaplin should take the gorilla forward, Rance for the faster, more agile forward.

When we play Hawthorn, Chaplin should take Roughead, Rance should take Franklin, both have the ability to negate both.

Some would say Chapls was recruited for the role he's playing now ie loose man which for me is mind boggling. He's the biggest bloke we have down there, FFS make a change and see if he can do anything. Agree with the OP and agree with the poster that said there was a serious lack of 3rd man up assistance

I think the fitness of chaplin is the the issue as he's hardly had any preseason. Having said that maybe chappy should start on him and then switch him if we are in trouble. I would also say that its the whole match committee not just the senior coach.

All we had to do was put somebody to guard the dangerous space in front of him (Chaplin could have done that) and the problem was solved. Our zoning was baffling, players were constantly guarding the least dangerous areas.

I agree with this thinking for young players, but with 7 preseasons under his belt, he is starting from a high base. I'm not saying he's anywhere near fit, but a guy at his age doesn't start from so far back.

It is if your coming off a knee, but i get you point. However if you listen to a lot of recent ex players and they say your stuffed without a preseason. Its also why why he looks so mechanical below the knees.

In all seriousness Griffiths is the best option. He may have been towelled up too, but at least he has size and is quick for 200cm and makes good decisions with the ball in hand. We need to persist with him. He is a young KPP. He is our Carlisle.

He may be in the future but he is so far off the defender carlisle is it's not funny. I do get what you mean but he is a way off.

Hawthorn persisted with Schoenmakers for years and are now reaping the rewards. We need to do the same. Griffiths can also be swung forward. May be a better option than Vickery too.

Im a little surprised grimes wasn't considered for cloke.has an uncanny knack of getting a fist to the ball, i will say though cloke was unstoppable its as good a game ive seen from a Key forward for some time
He is just too bloody big, if he gets front position and half decent delivery he just can't be stopped.

chaplin was on cloke at times, didnt he go off injured after knights smashed him in the head? i didnt see chaplin again after that and thats when cloke went nuts

We've been killed by big forwards all year so far, even more so than last year. Chaplin has been decent but Rance seems to be well beaten most weeks. They need to sort out a better system or something down there.

One of the more baffling match-up's I've witnessed. Hardwick's already done this a few time this year in games too. Doing it with Cloke just exposed it for all to see.

Last year we had no choice - this year we have one - Chaplin. Hell I'd even play Griffiths on the likes of Elmer before Rance - and I don't rate Griffiths as a backman at all.
