2016 coaching team:
Ross Lyon, senior coach
Simon Eastaugh, midfield coach
Brent Guerra, defensive coach
Michael Prior, defensive coach
Mark Stone, forwards coach
Marc Webb, midfield coach
Peter Sumich, senior development coach/assistant coach
David Hale, development/specialist coach
Roger Hayden, development coach
Anthony Rock, development coach

Must say these changes should be interesting....Stone to forward line is an interesting one,Sumich couldn't make it happen so good luck Stone

I like Marc Webb getting promoted...I really rate this guy

I'm so glad we have a new forwards coach. I think it was him doing some one on one work with Balic & Fyfe yesterday.

In b4 "typical ross double the defensive coaches"
Guerra is listed there to add the 'hawkesque' rebound to our back line.

I've heard from a few of the young blokes that they are so far really enjoying working with Rock and foot skills are a huge focus of his.

His methods get results.

Sumich still has a game day role and could easily be playing a part in the foward line.

Yep, and I'd say that Hale will be involved with the forwards whereby Roger will be involved with the defence still. Rock will be with the midfield. We've always had 2 midfield coaches, last year it was Stone and Kirk. I think the extra defence coach is a new thing but I could be wrong.

I wonder if Rock will be working with Peel on match days like Webb was?

So is Eastaugh a combined ruck/clearance coach, or just ruck? Stone was a dedicated clearance coach from memory, and did improve our performance in that area (although perhaps Fyfe may have helped a touch). Hard to get a read on what the Sumich role actually is now as well.

I'd be interested to know from the training watchers - how do the "line"coaches manage the interaction with the other groups? The game seems so focused now about transition from one part of the field to another, so I would have thought that would form a large basis of the coaching as well.

Sumich's role is a direct replacement of Simon Lloyd's from the past few years.

You'd think Eastaugh would be looking after the ruck part of clearances which makes sense.

Looks like Hale will be dealing with the Ruck/Fwds and Eastaugh will take the midfield set ups as a whole. That makes sense - our midfield works better when Sandi has better communication with the mids and they're treated as one unit. One of our strengths last year was other teams mids weren't sharking Sandi's taps as much, and our clearances went up significantly. Hopefully Hale can bring a better forward presence out of Clarke and Hannath.

I've got a good mate who follows the hawks (yeah, it's sh*t sometimes) and I asked him if he thought that Guerra would be a good coach for the defensive role and he reckons absolutely. He said Guerra usually was the one giving sprays to anyone not held to account i.e. not leaving their man for third man up or being ready for the second pressure handball, staying goal side etc. I think he'd be a great addition for the younger blokes with the combination of Roger as well.

Hale can hopefully improve Apeness/Griff/Clarkes/Hannath talents as forwards as well as ruckman as well.

My memory isn't what it used to be so excuse me if I have this wrong, but didn't Stone come on board because he was the world's best stoppage coach? Why then is he now a line coach? I don't get it.

Need a "hit targets inside 50 coach". But maybe stone can help the forwards clunk more marks and make more out of keeping the ball in the 50

Overall am excited (and hesitant) to see how the new crop of coaches fairs. Let's hope it's onwards and upwards in 2016! (In terms of finals performances anyway!)

I think you're right and to be honest he really didn't do a lot for our stoppages up until this year and as Caldera said, that had a lot to do with Fyfe's domination. I think he may've been a tad overrated when he arrived at Freo.

I'm pretty sure he came from Sydney, and was credited with improving their stoppage/clearance game. I think the same credit should go to him for his work with our midfield, because for years we couldn't capitalise on Sandi's dominance.

Ross must rate him if he has put him solely in charge of our weakest area.

An interesting one with Stoney being appointed forwards coach.
He is the stoppage guru but as we have seen first hand clearances are becoming less and less of a key indicator.
One thing though as a stoppage coach he will understand the importance of positioning, hopefully he can take that to the forward line.

Hopefully with two midfield coaches and Ross we can improve on our biggest achillies heel, ball movement and ball use going forward.
I know a lot of people (myself included at times) on here think by changing the personnel our problems in this area will be resolved but I feel there is a bit more to it than that.
Positioning and understanding that positioning is number 1 if we wish to improve in this area.

It was interesting to hear Ross talk about Clarko and how with him its all about shape when it comes to good ball movement.
I see a lot of soccer patterns in Hawthorns movement, little squares and triangles around the ball or when under pressure and using the whole ground going forward.
Our ball movement in the past has been more along the sling shot style which works against certain teams.
Though problems occur when the other team work this out and dont over commit their defenders.

Its all very exciting and one can hope that our coaches will unlock the pandoras box that is Freo scoring more.

Did we really capitalise on his dominance this year though? Or last year?

We were ranked 8th for centre clearances this year having the same average per game as the Bulldogs despite having 539 more hitouts than them.

In 2014 we were ranked 13th for centre clearances but once again dominated the league in hit outs.

Look i'm not knocking the guy, I'm sure he's a great assistant but perhaps there were a few other things at play that helped Sydney's midfield and perhaps our media team boosted him a touch ott when we got him? Or maybe it was just on here that he was spruked? Anyone remember what position he held at WC?
