I've been searching the net trying to find out, but would anyone know if young Clayton is a relative of Cyril Collard - who played for the Hawks and Subiaco in the 1950's?

Cheers guys.
Mate, the Collards are a huge Nyoongar name in the south west of Oz. There are literally hundreds of them, so it would be a fair bet he is a 'lation somewhere down the line. Pretty exciting lil player I think you'll find.

From the Subi website :

COLLARD, Cyril 30games between 1954-55

On 9 news tonight he was given a bit of air time.

quote " i'm ready " plus he said Bell was his mentor.
He said with Souths he is a leading forward but with Freo he will be a crumbing goal kicker...something like that.

He gave the distinct impression he 'is' ready, and confident.

To tell the truth I got a little bit goose bumps listening to him talk.
For those who didnt hear it he talked like one of the bro's but without any self consciousness. Good on him.

Collard to fill Farmer's boots in Dockers debut

24th May 2007, 18:30 WST

Fremantle youngster Clayton Collard will literally fill the boots of his boyhood idol Jeff Farmer when he makes a dream Indigenous Round debut for the Dockers against St Kilda tomorrow night.

Small forward Collard, the 31st player taken in last year’s national draft, was left stunned this morning when he was told by Dockers coach Chris Connolly he would be making his AFL debut in front of a national TV audience.

And with Farmer still suspended after his nightclub fracas with a bouncer last month, the under pressure Dockers will be hoping 18-year old Collard can emulate the man he modelled his game on.

“This is a special weekend, and I would like to play with the Wiz (for Fremantle) one day,” Collard said.

“I played with him a couple of weeks ago for (WA Football League team) South Fremantle, which was pretty good.

“Jeff Farmer was my idol growing up, I just love the way he plays, kicks goals and reads the play.

“He has been a mentor here and looked after me, told me what to do, how to get a kick - he has been good to me.”

Fremantle’s first selection at the 2006 NAB AFL National Draft, Collard is a graduate of the AFL-AIS Academy, and one of the eight indigenous players on Freo’s list this year, the most ever to be at an AFL club at the one time.

Having kicked 19 goals in eight matches for South Fremantle in the WAFL this year, including hauls of four in three consecutive matches, he comes in with the Dockers 3-5 and desperate for a win.

“I was hoping for at least one game, but I really thought the year after next year, I would make my mark,” said Collard.

“But it is a dream to play AFL ... although the speed will be a lot faster, and it will be a lot more physical.”

Gotta love the West. I am almost 100% sure he won't be wearing Farmer's actual boots. Or am I being to 'literal' here.

Hopefully he 'literally' has the ball on a string and his opponent in the palms of his hands.

Idiots.

I thought the same. I was waiting for some quirky revelation of how Collard was wearing a pair of the Wiz's boots for good luck or something.

Still, a good grasp of the English language has never been a prerequisite to be a West writer before I suppose.

My memories of the Collards are dirty little buggers who dyed their hair a curious shade of red.

Never looked quite right.
