Given the resources that are available to the club and the number of coaches and the world-class training facilities, I am wondering why our kicking skills are so deficient compared to other finals teams especially Hawthorn, Geelong, Adelaide and Fremantle. How many of our players simply kick the ball higher to their team-mates and especially in the forward line and so make it so much easier for their opponents. Moreover if you watched the game closely last night you will notice that whilst many of our players take a mark and then go back and then kick over the mark. In contrast, the clear Hawthorn plan is to move on as fast as possible and not kick over the mark but play on and prefererably kick the ball fast and low to their team-mates who are are usually not in static positions. So why cannot our kicking skills improve even if only a marginal improvement? I think that in the modern game kicking skills are more important than ever. Moreover this situation is exacerbated when so many of our players try to engage in cute and short passes often across the ground as was illustrated when Fasolo and Sinclair and Johnson tried to move the ball on. Ironically I still think that Didak is our best kick both for goal and around-the-ground. OK. Anyway I will be interested to see what reactions this thread response.

I don't know what's happened to our kicking skills. Players that have been good kicks over the years have all of a sudden become horrible.

Sidebottom went from having i think it was 96% disposal efficiency in 2010 grand final replay, to a player that butchers it every time he kicks it now.

Shaw/Thomas spray the ball..

Toovey, whilst has never been a good kick, is even worse now.

Even Pendlebury since coming back from injury isn't hitting targets like he used to.

Kicking skills is our biggest problem,as well as the drop off in itensity of our midfield.I don't know what the answer is because so many of our players kicking has dropped right off this year..It's a problem that needs to be addressed immediately.

In before "It's Buckley's fault".

Bucks will develop this list with an eye to the improvement of kicking efficiency, unlike Mick Malthouse who cared more about contested possessions then kicking talent, and that has left us with what we have, a team that was at the top of the game for the past two years, but has been surpassed by a new style of skillful football.

Agree. The game is constantly evolving and we need evolve with it. I am confident that Bucks will be up to this task.

Nothing to do with the facilities. It is about recruiting.
Of course every coach wants players that have good kicking skills but up until recently ( and especially with MM) the focus was more weighted to players who won the contested football, before that it was athletic players that can run all day whilst being tall enough to be a marking option.
The trends constantly evolve and right now Hawthorn's strategy of recruiting elite kickers is the successful style and therefore flavour of the moment.

It takes a couple of drafts to re-shape the squad.

Yep agree with some of the other comments, Bucks is clearly a fanatic when it comes to kicking as a required skill, I'm sure he will be making it a priority over the preseason and I'd expect our team to show a vast improvement over the next couple of seasons.

He also had to assemble a coaching team at the last minute and while Harvey was a great get, I don't think much of the rest and I expect a few changes.

It's because we bred and recruited athletes at the club in recent years, and not players with football skills.

I think by the time we recruit a player their technique is largely entrenched. It is something that is learnt as a junior. The control we have over this is in the players we recruit. It is something we definitely need to shift our focus on. It is an aspect of the game that we havn't respected enough in the past and it has caught up with us. Buckley has been very clear that it is something he values, we saw our recruiting focus shift last year to reflect that so i'm sure we will see it addressed. In the meantime we are behind many clubs.

Very Well Said. The Game how it's played is way Different then 2010 and Now it's more on Skills where we have Lacked. As in 2010 We Hid that with our Insane Pressure

Whhhat? I don't see any naitanuis, jettas, dangerfields or howes running around for us! We draft the best available players and trade for needs. Hopefully we trade for an elite kick.

They're all good kicks, last night was so contested of course there were going to be mistakes. When clanger kicks are coming from players like Cyril you know the game is hot. It's the fact we don't move the ball quick enough and hence have to wait and end up kicking to contests..

YEP! Really looking forward to Bucks version of 'Hawthorn", that being a team with exceptional (kicking) skills :thumbsu:

Tried to rate the team. Please add to it.
Currently, I am always nervous when we kick-out and pass in a contested situation.
1- Fasolo - good long kick on set shot.
2 - Tarrant - can kick long but has problems with those runners for boots
4 - Didak - great kick, but has lost distance since his injuries
5 - Maxwell - ordinary; cannot short pass
7 - Krak - good kick on and off goals; can short pass
8 - Harry O - floats the ball. Can kick long on the run. Poor set shot Cannot short pass.
10 - Pendles - good on a short pass; not bad on set shot
11 - Blair - was good on a set shot
13 - Thomas - inconsistent on the set shot; better on the run
16 - N Brown - did ok down back
17 - Beams - very good kick, also on set shots
18 - Jolly - good set shot; long kick
20 - Reid - good kick and can short pass
21 - Wellers - OK
22 - sidebottom - OK, but has been throwing the ball on the boot of late
26 - Johnson - helicopter, good and sometimes misses targets
28 - Sinclair - was terrible, but has improved of late
31 - Dawes - was good on set shots, but now just handpasses
32 - Cloke - Good kick both on the run & set shots; can also pass well.
34 - toovey - OK, but lacks some confidence
36 - Swan - His passes sometimes float in the air. Was good on set shots.
39 - shaw - Good kicker and can pass to player; good on a set shot

Anyone but Johnno, FFS his kicking skills are terrible at the best of times.

Heater, maybe Reid, or maybe someone left-field like Didak. Take the kick in, then push thru the middle.

No they're not. They are usually very reliable. His kick outs were great against Essendon and a breath of fresh air after the rubbish we had been putting up with all year. Not so good last night but probably our best option. Thats the big concern. We desperately need another small defender who can take that role on. We desperately miss Leon.

I agree, Johnno is one of our better kicks IMO.

You cannot be serious...

His kicking skills have been ordinary his entire career. His best kick is the helicopter punt.

No i'm not. I think some people confuse an awkward kicking style with being a shit kick. He is actually a very efficient and effective kick.
