Big Ivan has been in the game for 5 years now, and I think it's about time EVERY commentator learnt how to pronounce his name, rather than just read it as it's spelt on their stats/team sheets or whatever they use.

Ivan: It's pronounced E-VARN. Not EYE-VAN. Not EYE-VARN.

Maric: It's pronounced MARICH. Not MARICK.

Am I unreasonable to expect that after 5 years all commentators would be on board with this?

Nup - just another indication of the huge lack of professionalism amongst the commentators in general. Bruce McAvaney used to spend weeks studying athletes names from many countries across the planet, before the Olympics, to make sure he got them right - yet its clearly far too much to expect similar discipline and professionalism over a couple of dozen AFL names from this sorry bunch.

Bruce has always in my mind set the gold standard for sports commentary - Jacko was absolutely appalling today. Yet I hear the ABC was just as bad!!

So where do you go to hear decent AFL commentary?:(

Jacko was the reason I started this thread. I reckon I've heard him commentate at least 3 or 4 games involving Adelaide this year. It's not like he hasn't had ample airtime in games Ivan is involved in.

Bruce is great for names, as is Dennis Commetti, so I guess Ch 7 is the place to go. Anthony Hudson is quite good for pronunciation too. If only the rest followed their example, it's their job so they should be able to pronounce the 700ish players names. I'm just a supporter and I don't find it very hard.

:thumbsu:Hear, hear!!! When Nick Riewoldt said his name is pronounced Reevold not Reewold, the commentators were onto it immediately, no respect for Ivan.

And they don't even have to do all 700 at once!! Just a couple of dozen before each game with a week in the middle!!!! Sheeez... how hard can it be...

and you'd think with his background he could get it right ...

Yeah its just with the overall appalling standard of commentary it feels like its much more often! And quite frankly I hope Jacko stays there - what an idiot!:thumbsd: Sounded liek a petulant child today Cf in the last quarter ' What about that one with Kenendy in the third quarter...' Sheez give us a break!

 Jakovich rarely leaves Subiaco, we'd be (un)lucky to get him 3+ times a year

I've always pronounced Ivan's last name as 'Marich' however Phil Harper pronounced it as 'Marick' at the after match function tonight. So I wonder which one is right...

-ich.

all the Serbs and Croats I know pronounce their surnames that way. he'd be no different.

Maric himself says if different again cause he says it with an accent, so I suppose anyway you say it with an Aussie accent is incorrect. *shrugs*

But, some people change the pronounciation to suit Austrailia and the English language. Regardless, jacovich was a great player but should never be let near a commentary box. He hasn't the brain capacity

Its just the names with correct players bit Huddo struggles with.. there was another cracker tonight that I can't remember in the Brisbane game. Not to mention the henderson/armstrong mix up the other week (I didn't see it but heard it spoken of).
