Don't users of proxy servers, such as Primus and Bigpond customers, sometimes share IPs?
Message boards I have frequented in the past have often shut down for hours, or lost a lot of posts, because they automatically banned certain IP numbers - which happened to be shared by a lot of users, stopping them from posting.
I'm not sure exactly how this all works, but from what I have been told it is not all that simple.
I am a supporter of registration because the exclusivity of a name means posters get to "know" fellow posters (in the sense that familiarity often helps understand the tone of a post, whether it is serious, ironic, facetious, sarcastic, or malicious - more than any amount of smileys can ever do).

Im with Frodo on this. The mere act of having to go through multiple registrations would probably be enough deterent after awhile that the type of person that posts the inane and offensive sort of posts, would, in my view, grow bored with being banned and inevitibly quit for something that didnt require the 2/3 minutes of time it would take for each registration 'set-up'.
In a perfect world, yes leave it open for all to post. Trouble is, its not a perfect world. Big Footy now has many decent and regular posters who are all registered. It also has quite a few who choose not to register who are also good posters. The point of choosing to register or not isnt the issue.
The points trying to do something about the way that the boards being abused by some, who are making it a far less enjoyable forum to visit.
If it takes registration to help put a stop to this, and a return to the sensible (and sometimes not so sensible) BigFooty that was so terrific during the 2000 season. Then i think that its the best way to go.
Blueys been very quiet during all this debate, id like to know his thoughts on the matter.

Registration is nice - but it won't solve the problem of people like SS Jochem Pfieffer invading the boards.
Frodo has a good point to make, that the couple of minutes that it takes to register is often enough to deter nuisance posters, but with a character such as our Nazi provocoteur, it won't be a serious detterent.
The ultimate solution is to completely re-configure BigFooty into a series of secure BB's that only registered users with a password can access - however that would turn BigFooty into an exclusive club where the insiders go round and round in circles talking about the same shit over and over, and the outsiders will find it so hard to 'join the club' that they won't bother and BigFooty loses its freshness and open-ness.
... and I wouldn't want that to happen !
Leave it as it is I say - but lets have a little more 'policing' of the Boards to cut out stuff like SSJocPf's little effort as soon as it appears.

We only have the authority to moderate our won boards - ie., Shinners and the Kangaroos, Danni and Brisbane, Myself and Richmond etc.
We have no power on the main board whatsoever. This is something we will be asking Bluey about.

I suggested that it was foolish not to have compulsory registration in the DON'T OPEN PEIPER'S THREAD thread.
Whereas I understand that unregistered posters may have some wonderful insights into the ways of the football world or even philosophy, 99.9% of them are idiots playing silly buggers and basking in the anonymity. And if you do have something useful to say, why would you just reply once or twice?

I have to disagree. Whilst I acknowledge Frodo and Grendel's points about the extra time being a deterrant I think in a lot of cases it won't make a difference. even setting up another email account relatively simple matter nowadays.
A registered user is still going to be able to post crap like we have seen on here over the last few days. If we really want to fix the problem then I would suggest Bluey needs to have a look at the way the main boards are being moderated. If clearly offensive things are removed quickly then we won't have problems. Most of these people are after attention, removing their contributions deprives them of that. Forcing them to register certainly won't.

Agreed elt. Registration is no panacea. This registration has a fictional email address and can be created quickly and easily.
The only answer to the ratbag element is either to tolerate them, they usually get sick of it after a while, or use more effective moderation.

I think you just made another good case for why you should have registered.
We can never know who the Real Hawkforce. is and who is just using the name for fun.
Chat is even worse where imposters are commonplace. Agaim, registration is needed to keep CHAT from being farcical at times.
It would be nice if everyone registered however it wont solve problems like the one we've just had- I think the real solution is for the Moderator to actually moderate, and remove offensive material like this, as quickly as possible- Im sure a number of emails have been sent to Bluey asking for its removal yet its still here the following day. why hasnt it been removed ???
