I have a amd 2600xp, and when i first got it, i constantly had games crash back to windows, so i had to either lower the fsb or the speed of the ram,

right now i think i have my ram running at 266Mhz (should be able to do 400Mhz) and FSB at 333Mhz (which it should be at, and its not overclocked) and i don't get crashes any more, the other options i had was to have fsb at 266 and ram at 400 or 333. to this day i still don't know what is wrong, i have tried different ram, power supply, but the cpu i think is fine, anyway ...

so what you might want to try is setting your fsb to 266 and your ram to 133 in the bios and see what happen's its not ideal but worth a go

i tried encoding the dvd off, this time with the computer case open to let soem air in. It worked fine, the temperature stayed below 41 degrees.

im gonn ahave to check out the bios to see if theres an option that's halting it when it gets to 45 degrees or something, but if there is would it be safe to change that setting to 50 degrees?

leaving the side of is fine but did you have a case fan at all i cant remember if you did.

as for the speed of amd cpus what has been said is correct, all chips run slower than what is stated,

all intel processors even celerons run at the speed that they state. before anyone says anything yes mobile processors are a different story,

That's nothing! My AMD 1400 is running at 57 at the moment and when the CPU is being heavily used can get into the mid to high 60's. Normally temperature shouldn't be a problem until temperatures get into the 70's at a minimum.
Later AMD chips had the heat problem resolved.

But if you find that it is temperature related, then this more likely indicates another problem with connections. As temperature increases, componenets expand and that can affect your system, although not if its working properly.

Unplug absolutely everything, all cables, RAM etc and plug everything back in. Don't do the processor though unless you really do know what you doing. You'd be surprised at how many problems this can fix.

thanks ill have to try that

ok, the problem has finally been found (really this time) the only question is how to fix it

the video card fan was gone, but that wasnt the issue (I replaced the fan anyway)

when it was still freezing, i took out one of the memory sticks and the freezing stopped.

i used the computer for a week or so without the 2nd ram stick and it worked fine.

put it back in tonite, and it froze within 20 minutes.

does this mean my memory is now useless or is there someway of fixing it?

I would suggest there is a problem with the RAM. Not necessarily a lack of it.. you could do wit more, but that shouldn't be the issue. Some brands of RAM conflict with a lot of things, and will simply give up if they can't handle a task quickly enough.

Not sure if this could be correct but....maybe its a problem with your driver for your video card. I had the exact same problem a couple of years ago and fixed it by installing a driver update for my video card. If you have a common video card then it should be easy to find the latest driver.
