I really rate this young man as a future star for AFC, but I have a couple of concerns about his technique at the moment:

1. His attack on the contested ball is fearless, but his first instinct at times is to dive on the ball, then try to stand up and shrug off the tackles. I'd like to see him stay on his feet and try to grab some of those balls cleanly and use his pace to break away.

2. His intensity is great, but can get in the way of his skills. Over the last couple of weeks, his game could have been so much better if he had not been quite so tight when trying to mark. He has spilled several chest marks and a couple of golden opportunities to take grabs in the goal-square through "hard hands".

I hope he finds that balance between grunt and finesse that will elevate his game even further.

Really good post. Finesse the key word and you're spot on.

I really hope we don't continue to use him as an impact player or battering ram, just because the bulk of our midfielders are skinny, polite, goldilockses.

Getting sick of these threads about dangerfields problems. He is 20 and a lot of us forget this, hes still learning the game and how to become an elite player at AFL level.

If he still has these problems in 2-3 years yes I will have some concerns, but for the moment, I am happy with how is progressing and just waiting for him to become one of the best midfielders in the AFL

Not trying to knock the lad, just observations that I have made about where his game might go.
Must admit I have missed posts knocking him - I would happily have 5 Dangers as our midfield

Bit of a defence mechanism when anyone says anything slightly negative about this kid, but have noticed he has hard hands and can be a bit fumbly at times but im sure this will improve once he gets more experienced and starts spending more time in the middle

Absolutely. I remember Roo's early days in the team - he was used in just that way because he had a scarily strong body. Once he combined that strength and aggression with ball-getting ability, he developed into the champion we all loved...

Very nice OP, and totally agree

Would probably get more possies if he stayed on his feet and ran with the ball. When he goes down and comes back up with 3 men hanging off of him, its a bit hard to get a proper possession

More possies is what we all want to see from the young man

He looks like he is about to dive into a pool sometimes. Head tucked into outstretched arms and straight in. Guys got balls especially after the amount of knocks he has taken. But yeah I noticed this from day one. Looks like he has been working on it though because I haven't noticed it as much as I used to.

One thing he's either added to his game recently, or I simply haven't noticed in the past (probably the latter :o) is the ability to scoop up the ground ball at pace without breaking stride. It's certainly a nice alternative to diving on the ball. However, I agree with you, he does do it a little bit too much.

On the other hand, he's starting to earn Joel Selwood-like free kicks from it, so perhaps it's not that bad a thing :o

His hands aren't hard at all, he is a superb one touch grab even under pressure, in fact he's probably better under pressure, he just happens to drop the odd sitter every now and then:o No one in our side, barring Porps, has as good a hands out in front of his eyes on a lead, even at full pace.

Like someone mentioned earlier, the lad is only 20 and these things will come with experience, but i have noticed the above as well. Im quite surprised he hasn't been pinged for HTB more often

He's been getting a lot more loose balls recently. I think he's been spending more time in the middle though so that could help with that. Really busted his guts on the weekend to try and get us back in the game.

wasn't sure where to put this so here it is:

Every one can rest assured that Dangerfield is going nowhere! I have it from a VERY reliable source that he has recently bought a house in Adelaide and has invited one of our new rising stars (;)) to live with him. He wants to mentor the young fella a bit and work with him on game prep etc...

Certainly not the actions of one considering leaving at seasons end.
