Yes I would like to see us win the NAB cup and beat the pies at least to get more memberships, however what toll will this have on our players?

How exactly should we balance the problem of winning to get memberships, or loosing to not burn out our players but the club looses money...

My suggestion is play a full strength team against the pies, knock them off, and reap the rewards. Then the week after play the weakest team possible, then play a full strength team the week before round 1 to get them in to gear whether it's in the nab challenge or cup.

a slight conundrum TP however I'm a great believer that unless you're coming off winning a flag, hence easing the boys in after a delayed start then there is plenty to prove and much to gain from the momentum that builds from winning both ON and OFF the field:thumbsu:

I think we will play the best team we possibly can throughout the NAB cup, however, we will be balancing medical concerns, risk to older players and getting games into youngsters/older guys who've been out for a while. There wont be a massive change in the lineup after we play collingwood. We could certainly do with the prize money and membership boost from winning the comp, it means we could afford a couple of more rookies each year if we wanted and would help us possibly make cragieburn the next lexus centre ;) And the experience of winning something will be great for all the players as we look to enter our window of opportunity.

If we do really go for it, I wont be complaining. Even if the worst thing possible happens ie a key player goes down, we have sufficient depth to handle it now.

Arguably our best player, is 34. I certainly do NOT want to see the big Cho running around in all 4 games just to win a NAB Cup. Simple as that.

The best way to get through a pre-season comp is to finish it with NO injuries. Its better than winning the comp!

Therefore, we continue to rotate the players, keeping them all fit and fresh. If we win, great. If we lose, no big deal.

Forget the bloody memberships, if we catn attract them after the finish to 2008 and then off-season news, then we never will win over our barrackers.

Remember, Carlton won a NAB cup and then followed it up with a priority draft pick. ;)

People keeping talking about our "best team" in the NAB cup as our best 22.

Not so.
For me the best team we can put together is a mixture of some of our best players yes, but also a mixture of young talent given opportunities, players allowed to fight for the position of best 22 players and some that have come back from injuries.
If we were to put together our best 22 and beat the pies, sure the memberships might go up a little...and then the win would be forgotten.
But if we were to win, while also showing the fans some of the new talent knocking on the door of some best 22 spots, don't you think that would be more enticing for the fans...and memberships.
To put it more plainly, Richo is a star. He could easily play and get 30 disposals, 18 or so marks and kick a few goals. He has nothing to prove playing in the NAB cup. But I'd rather see Nahas lay a dozen tackles and kick a few goals while playing on a wing or even see an Alroy Gilligan cause as much trouble to the pies as Milne does to us.
You'd see a greater rise in memberships if we won with a team with a few kids given a chance, rather than the same old team from last year just doing the business as they would in the season proper.

Couldn't give a fat rats clacker about winning the Who Cares Cup. If we win it great if we don't no big loss. I said in another thread I only see one good thing that comes out of winning or even making the GF of the Pre Season comp and that is our players are playing week after week on the best grounds in Australia. Not some up country ground that up until the Thursday before the match was some farmers cow paddock.

Here is what is most important to me on Thursday:
1. No injuries
2. To see how players like Riewoldt, Raines, Polo, Graham, Nahas, Hughes, Post, Rance, Vickery, Thomson, Hislop and a few others who may get a run perform. It will be interesting to see if their games against Freo flash in the pan type games or are they really stepping up.
3. We are competitive, don't care if we lose, just want to see us compete with a team tha made finals last year. Especially if big names like Richo, Brown & Simmonds are missing.
4. Winning.

nail hammer head

I personally think if we win then this is the side we should roll out for round 3

B Hislop FB Rance BP Raines
HB Post CHB Gourdis HB Johnson
W Deledio C Connors W McMahon
HF Nahas CHF Putt HF Reiwoldt
FP Morton FF Vickory FP Gilroy

Ruck Graham Rover Foley Captain Ruck Rover , Collins Vice Captain

Bench , Brown , Jackson , White , Bojangles

And at half time the backs should change with the forwards , F&*k the Nab Cup
