After last weeks effort against Melbourne, Geelong face GC at Skilled Stadium.

The advertised line for the game is about 78.

It's not out of the question that the Cats could do a number on GC also, so I'm wondering has any team ever registered back to back 100 point victories?

These just off the top of my head.

The Cats did it back in 1992:

Rd 7 - beat Brisbane 239-75
Rd 8 - beat Adelaide 210-87
(Geelong had won by 98 points in rd 6)

Sydney also managed this in 1987

Rd 16 - beat West Coast 201-71
Rd 17 - beat Essendon 236-73
(Sydney won its next match by 91 points as well)

West Coast had a close call in 1988

Rd 2 - beat Essendon 175-76
Rd 3 - beat Brisbane 192-74

Collingwood also in 1991

Rd 14 - beat Sydney 143-44
Rd 15 - beat Adelaide 160-37

Am sure there's others as well.

Generous fixturing by the VFL right there!

Just because I've got to add WAFL equivalents to everything, here's a nice little run that Claremont had in 1981:

Rd 16 - beat Subiaco 161-62
Rd 17 - beat Perth 254-81
Rd 18 - beat East Perth 162-61
Rd 19 - beat West Perth 225-81

The opponents scores look like a conspiracy - a sixty one and two plus two eighty ones.

Makes me wonder too if anybody walloped Melbourne, North Melbourne and South Melbourne in consecutive weeks.

West Coast played the two "Melbournes" and the other "ex-Melbourne" in alphabetical order in consecutive rounds in 1996.

Round 6 West Coast 156 v Melbourne 50
Round 7 West Coast 125 v North Melbourne 58
Round 8 West Coast 100 v Sydney/SM 64

It's funny, I can vividly recall the St.Kilda and Richmond games from 1989. The middle one against Brisbane, I have absolutely no recollection of whatsover. Funny when you win by nearly 130 points you'd remember something about it, but ....nope, nothing.

There's a challenge for this week, highest winning margin against a team from Queensland at Geelong. (not a cocky comment either, merely what I would like to do to them)

Another Goalkicking Spree as Cats brutalise Bears.

Excell led the goalkicking with five.
Rookie coach, Blight said he saw a couple areas where improvement was required.

what about consecutive 100 point losses and 50 point losses

Most consecutive 100 point losses: Three - St Kilda Rounds 1-3 1985.
100 pts v Sydney
140 pts v Carlton
113 pts v Richmond

Most Consecutive 50 point losses: Seven - Fitzroy Rounds 13-19 1995.
99 pts v Hawthorn
67 pts v WB/Footscray
81 pts v Melbourne
71 pts v Essendon
97 pts v Carlton
52 pts v Fremantle
126 pts v Sydney

St Kilda was apparently at the height of their night club/party phase.
Fitzroy was dead team walking.

Still remember the Saints after that Rd 3 game where they were thumped by the Tigers 211 to 98 i think...their percentage rose several percent since the 98 points was more than their aggregate for the first two games!

Geelong no doubt become the only side to win consecutive games by 150 points.

Interesting that Sheedy had coached the Bombers (albeit over a long career) to two losses of 160+ points....any other coach suffered more than one such loss?

suprised there is only 6 (now with geelong beaten GC) and equaly remarkable that geelong have 4 of the 6 instances.

Geelong 2011 round 19 186 pts
Geelong 2011 round 20 150 pts.

Now makes the full list of consecutive 100 point wins.

In the history of the League if you have been thrashed it is most likely to have been by Geelong.

Geelong has had the most 10 goal plus wins - 214, 5 more than Collingwood from 106 fewer matches.

Since 1987 17.64% of Geelong's matches have been wins of 10 goals or more. Next most: Hawthorn 13.84%. (Richmond 4.91%, Fremantle 3.72%).

Since 1987 14 of the highest 50 winning margins have been by Geelong.
Next most: Nth Melbourne 6.

It may have something to do with Geelong as club having a long tradition of playing clean and fast open attacking football, dating back to the coaching of Reg Hickey in the 1930's and 1950's. A culture that has emphasized skill over brawn - "playing the game as it should be played".
(In Hickey's 11 year stint as coach 1949-59 only 2 Geelong players were suspended by the League tribunal.)

This culture has been disparaged as "hand-bagging" and critics over the years have felt that Geelong sacrificed some of the necessary negative slog for the fancy and the entertaining. However when on song and playing the game "as it should be" they have been unbeatable (as they were for 26 consecutive matches in 1952-3) and especially since the end of the 1980's capable of racking up huge scores and margins.

(Since 1987, 13 of the top 54 scores - 182 to 239 points have been by Geelong. Next most: Nth Melbourne 7.)

VFL/AFL record.

Think RR was just tongue in cheek saying it a bit like the World Series baseball for example. :D

Must say SJ, reading RR's last post it's been a nice time to be a Cat fan. Statistically a little amazing given we have won close to 200 fewer games than the Pies and 100 less than Carlton or Essendon overall.

It's just a common phrase that gets bandied about all too often in AFL circles. Heard it again on Saturday night when they were discussing record numbers of inside 50s. But "world record"? No. Competition record. VFL/AFL record.

Yeah a lot of Geelong's historical data is surprisingly good. Always reminds me that the Cats should probably have more than eight flags though.
